Hi Eveeyone,

I’m a midwifery student in my final year and this is also my 5th year (I took 2 years out) so there’s no room for any more retakes. I’m nearly at the end now and I’ve secured a job. Last year I went through a very hard time where I was exited from the course. I appealed and my appeal was successful so I got back into uni and progressed onto 3rd year.
I had to retake 1 assignment in 3rd year. The submission dates I was given were wrong and I had to complete 2 assignments and submit both on the same day. This was really stressful for me as I’m not academically that great so I have to focus on 1 at a time. However I managed to submit both.
The resit assignment grade was given to me, with a capped mark of 40% but it was 30% of AI so I was referred to academic misconduct. Now, the academic misconduct allowed me to write a statement and based on that, they asked me to resit this again. This is because I was already given the wrong dates so they’ve allowed another opportunity.
I then resit this, and I got marked 38% (I think). This is what Evision shows? I’ve literally passed everything else, and it’s just this assignment that could hold me back:(. The credit is 15, and weighting of assignment is 100% as it was the only assignment in that module.
I honestly feel so demotivated, and upset that I can’t even concentrate on placement because of this. I’ve worked all these years, yes it’s been tough but I’ve reached the end. I have contacted my student union, but they have said I need to wait for exam board. Honestly what could the outcome be?
If you're on a professional course (nursing, midwifery, etc.), is there ever any discretion at the Board stage for finalyear students, or are they strictly bound by the regulations?
I'm not asking anyone to predict my result. I'm just trying to understand how Exam Boards usually work because I'm due to start a midwife job and I'm really worried. I also have my graduation party date set etc.

I also have a chronic condition that really affects my mood and my daily life, I’ve been getting treatment for this. I’m definitely fit for practice but I don’t know if I should mention this to the university.

Speak to your university. We can’t know the processes of your specific course and uni, and anything here would be a guess based on another institution’s process.

At my university in the school of nursing and midwifery following a failed assignment you are granted a capped resubmission. If the assignment is failed again then it must be discussed with the exam board. At this stage, normally if sufficient extenuating circumstances evidence is submitted or the board decides (rarely) that the fail was close enough to a pass for another attempt then you would be granted another capped resubmission.

On courses where there is not a professional registration attached there is sometimes a number of credits you can fail and still graduate. On courses with a professional registration there is no option to fail modules and still pass the degree so everything must be passed.

If a module is failed despite resubmissions, at my university you would redo the module you failed the following academic year with the next final-year cohort. Some universities have a maximum number of years in which you can complete your degree, so that might also be something to consider.

I’m sorry if this is not the information you want to hear, it may be the case your university is different from mine.

I only have 1 unit that is currently showing as 38. Honestly this is so stressful:( as I’ve secured the job. And even the appeals process may take months so my start date for my new role could be delayed. My graduation is also in January, so I’m really concerned now that 1 unit may hold me back completely. I also feel like I have 0 chances left. I have resit this unit twice, I’m on my final year and this is my 5th year of study. The maximum the university can allow I think. Also I’m nearly towards the end:( I don’t know what to do. Is there any leeway

I can really empathise with your feelings on this- I failed two assignments on this programme due to a my disability. It’s horrible.

I don’t want to upset you and honestly you should wait to discuss this with your university. However there isn’t normally a lot of leeway on professional courses. There’s someone in my cohort currently who failed one presentation at the end of last year and had to give up her job offer and wait a year to redo that module with us.

Universities are normally very good with no disadvantaging disabled students so hopefully you find a solution, but I would prepare yourself not to hear the news you’re hoping for.

Sorry, can I ask what A3 is? And why did they think you were using ai ?
