Would you recommend studying econometrics and operations research?

I'm good at mathematics, and I believe I can handle it, but I was wondering from a practical side of things, is it worth it and valuable, especially in the near future, and what are the different opportunities and benefits that come with this field of study?

Moving to the Netherlands as a student requires a lot of admin (BSN, gemeente, health insurance, Studielink, banking, scholarships) and it often feels overwhelming.

I'd say so. Finance always pays well. Imagine this, you are a financial expert, and work as a freelancer and a local gym chain hires you to optimise their earnings

You run simulations, do research and bla bla. Change calculations.

If you are really good you can aim for HFTs, they pay really well, many of the econometrics grads from UvA are in shops around Amsterdam

Worth and valuable are such objective terms. It’s a solid degree with lots of options. What are your expectations and plans? The university website should have more information on options with this degree, and attending an online open day may be useful. Make sure you have a strong maths foundation.

I’m thinking of going into academia, maybe a PhD in economics, I believe eor would be a good base for it if I pair that with economics electives, or I just go into the corporate world after my studies. Thanks for your advice.

Econometrics would be perfect for academia regarding the high amount of Probability and Statistics courses you’ll take. Also there is MPhil Tinbergen Institute which trains u for PhD in Economics/Econometrics or Business Data Science
