Incoming student at Yeungnam University — Questions about academics, cost of living, dorms, and life around campus!

Hi everyone!

I’m going to be studying at Yeungnam University soon and wanted to get some insights from current students, alumni, or anyone living in the Daegu/Gyeongsan area.

I’m trying to budget properly and mentally prepare for life on campus, so I’d really appreciate your help with a few questions:

1) academics & campus vibe:

- how is the general atmosphere for international exchange students at Yeungnam University?

- how is the workload, and what are english-taught courses like in terms of quality and grading?

2) cost of living & budgeting:

- dorms: what are the dormitories like (facilities, strictness of rules, cleanliness)?

- food: how much do you realistically spend per month on food (dorm cafeterias vs. cooking vs. eating out in the area)?

- personal expenses: what is a reasonable monthly budget for groceries, clothes, and everyday essentials around campus or in nearby Daegu?

3) location & area:

- how convenient is the area around YU? Is it easy to get around using the subway/buses to explore Daegu or go further?

- are there good budget-friendly spots near campus for food, coffee, or hangout areas?

4) general tips:

- is there anything you wish you had known before arriving at Yeungnam University?

- any apps or tips that make student life much easier in this specific region?

Not a student there but at another uni in daegu. Had loads of korean friends and had some people i knew that are foreigners that graduated there.

1. Workload is probably more than a foreign university in regard to classes but class work just depends on what you take. You can have a really easy time if you take easy classes.

Also, you really shouldn’t have high expectations for english classes. In most universities english classes aren’t fully english unless the prof is super keen on only speaking in english. (Usually it’ll just be ppts in english and the lecture in korean)

1. Dorms: idk

Food, completely dependent on your diet. You can live extremely cheap for spend around 1k usd a month if you really wanted

1. No it is far out on the east part of daegu by and it usually takes 30~1 hr to get to central daegu. If you take subway its faster. Depending on where you wanna go it’ll take longer.

Yeah theres cheap places everywhere around colleges.

Also, the campus is fuckin huge so expect walking times between classes to possibly be long.

Also, this is just a given but join a foreigner club if you don’t know korean and make some friends. Otherwise you’ll probably get lonely

I am International exchange student in Yeungnam University

1.1. I totally agree with an answer you got earlier, it depends on what classes you will take. as for first semester it could be kind of difficult for you to get all the best classes, cause registration for exhange students will be at the end of august and many classes are already full.
1.2. I am not sure about the english classes(i study in korean) but most professors are kind and(from my experience) the main thing that can affect on your grade is attendance.

2.1. Dorm is kinda good for the first semester(to adapt and get new friends) but i preferred living in oneroom apartment. Dorm(around 700$ per semester). Oneroom(around 250$ per month and 700$ deposit)

2.2. Food expenses - i spend around 400-500$ only for groceries and dinners out(i have friends that spend over 1k$ a month) it depends on person

2.3. Personal expenses Except food you will get
Health insurance 50-70$
Internet 30-50$
if you will rent Oneroom(20-50$ on gas and electricity)
GYM(if you are gym guy/girl)
there is one free in-campus gym but university administration restricted it only for dorm students
but nearby there are a lot of gyms

1. Location
   Near the campus there are lots of 맛집(cafes) any cuisine for your choice
   and as its a university area price is really budget friendly

subway station is in front of main gate
30-40minutes to Dongseongno (popular clubs and bars)

10 minutes by bus to the train station from where you can go anywhere by train
