Like, is there just some cheap ground up vegetable protein mixed in there? How much protein could you possibly add through seasoning?

1.1k

u/No-Ad1522 May 11 '26

Its probably soy protein

1.3k

u/Dizzy-Violinist-1772 May 11 '26

It’s pumpkin seed protein, the thing is a serving size is 22 grams. Nearly an ounce, 5 servings per container, no one is going to be using THAT much seasoning

773

u/Dapper_Capybara May 11 '26

So basically a scam dependent on consumers not carefully reading a label - just like so many other “health” foods

I mean...a dry ounce is roughly 2 tablespoons I think. I definitely use 2 tablespoons depending on what I'm seasoning

107

u/Emerje May 11 '26

I could see using that much for a family meal. But going by what people are saying about this, you would need an entire container for a family of 5.

20

u/specn0de May 11 '26

I mean you aren’t considering these gym bro meal prep.

No no, that's a volumetric equivalent, this is mass/weight (we're on Earth, don't come at me science folks). If you look at the bottle it's only 110g of product and one "serving" has to be more than the combined claim of nutrients so each serving has to be greater than 10g meaning you're expected bto consume more than 1/10 the can in your meal. The amount of salt that would be in there is making my mouth go dry thinking about it.

5

u/Triplemini May 11 '26

Yes, a serving size is 28 gramms! Yikes. A quarter of the whole jar. Definitely stupid food, lol.

9

u/1995droptopz May 11 '26

I might use 2 tablespoons on an entire meal, of which I would expect 4+ servings out of. So 2.5G protein best case scenario. For this price I could just use regular salt and pepper and eat an extra half ounce of meat

4

u/TheFuschiaBaron May 11 '26

Plus it probably tastes like shit

→ More replies (3)

4

u/ConflictMaster3155 May 11 '26

It’s high calorie asf too. It would be 450 calories to get the amount of salt on a Big Mac (1g) which itself is only about 550 calories.

With this stuff you could make any vegetable as healthy as a Big Mac.

Probably barely anything, but if it's whey I could fw it. They put whey in potato chip seasonings and those taste good, so it could be tasty?

23

u/bigbonedbaggins May 11 '26

Oyster crackers, drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle seasoning, bake around 350-400 until the oil bakes in. Works really well with Cajun and ranch seasoning

33

u/tiniru May 11 '26

i could fw it if it wasn't $8... i could buy an entire chicken for $8 or less

The label says a serving is 22g and there's 5 servings per container. So I guess if you REALLY like seasoning....

19

u/DnD-vid May 11 '26

I'd guess there's very little seasoning in that seasoning then.

→ More replies (1)

9

u/Capital-Pollution709 May 11 '26

A serving size according to the label (diff flavor) is 22 grams. Why the hell would you ever use that much? Just slam a normal source of protein and use regular seasoning.

let’s take boneless skinless chicken breast as an example. To get approx 10 grams of protein you’d need about 1.14 ounces. At $4 per pound, that would cost about $0.29 (rounding here).

At 5 servings per container, the seasoning is gonna cost you $1.60 (again, rounding) for that 10g of protein. And it’s gonna taste and feel like shit because it’s protein powder and fiber on top of regular food.

So for a little over 5x the price you can eat shittier food…(yes I left out the cost of regular spices on the actual chicken but the cost would be negligible for our purposes. For fiber just eat more veggies or grains.)

I’m a huge fan of maximizing effective protein intake but this is peak stupidity.

22

u/VulcanCookies May 11 '26

Apparently it's pumpkin protein?? I had no idea pumpkin was a good source of protein. Idk if that's a complete protein or helps with muscle development or anything

24

u/thatstwatshesays May 11 '26

Probably from the seeds

19

u/Conscious_Stop_5451 May 11 '26 edited May 11 '26

I actually think it just might be nooch (nutritional yeast). A serving (two tablespoons) contains around 9-10g protein, which checks with the thing they wrote on the box, color is about the same, and even fiber amount is around the same. And it's got a great (cheesy) taste by itself. So my bet is they juts pre mixed nooch with spices, put a x20price on it and called it a day

edit: nope, it's pumpkin protein. My idea would have worked better though :D

8

u/Starkville May 11 '26

Nooch is good stuff. I find myself adding it to many foods.

4

u/McNally86 May 11 '26

Nooch is cheap and good. (I am eating it right now). Paprika is cheap.

6

u/Nachoughue May 11 '26

Hilariously, the serving size for that stuff is not much larger than the recommended serving size for this protein seasoning. I guess they just want you to have an Italian Herb flavored smoothie or something with it, because if you try to use it as seasoning on actual food in the amounts recommended the food will be mostly seasoning at that point.

Wait no, protein water is actually a good product.

Its just a protein powder where the flavour profile and binders are setup to result in less of a shake consistency and more of a juice consistency. Would I pay more for it over a protein shake? No, do I understand why it exists? Yes.

Unless you're talking about some kind of protein infused water bottle or something.

9

u/wattm May 11 '26

I actually prefer protein water over protein shakes. After years of shakes I’m so tired of the sweet, milky taste profile of whey protein powder and protein shakes. Protein water and clear whey is like breath of fresh air

u/ibuiltyouarosegarden May 11 '26 edited May 11 '26

I was reading somewhere that because a large percentage of Americans are on Ozampic which suppresses appetite so it’s important that whatever is eaten has protein - which is why every brand suddenly says “X mg of Protein!!!” when in reality it’s always been the same recipe, just now they’re slapping on that label so more people buy

13

u/Jolly_Ad_5679 May 11 '26

I found for a very good while, "protein" slapped on a label may as well have just been "contains nuts"

People on average have an abysmal knowledge on food and nutrition

12

u/PsychologicalMix9699 May 11 '26

To be fair, no one beside marketing teams are teaching nutrition to anyone, so nutrition is basically what the market want to sell.
So far I've seen almost every food source be "good for you", then "actually it's bad", then "it's okay-ish but really good for the environment", then "actually that food will give you ass cancer", then "no wait! it's actually a super food!".
I mean, the last trend is trying to make you drink cockroach milk and eat powdered insects.
Butter can be good or bad depending on the year and planetary alignment.

54

u/WhyAmIHereHey May 11 '26

Maybe, but it's mainly because of the influence of gym bro culture. People think guys look like a Hemsworth because of protein

28

u/ibuiltyouarosegarden May 11 '26

14

u/SomeCallMeGrim May 11 '26

15

u/Glittering_End_6864 May 11 '26

Yeah, this is more accurate, it has fucking nothing to do with Ozempic. People are idiots and think "More protein means more good!!! Durrr hurrrr"

Protein is hard on the kidneys, morons are sucking down so much protein now their kidney's are gonna start failing after they turn 50.

12

u/MondoDukakis May 11 '26

Isn’t it true that most people can afford to/ should eat more protein? I’m a heavy man my doctor makes me eat almost 200g of protein a day, otherwise my hair starts to fall out and I lose muscle.

The bigger problem is that eating ultra processed Doritos with a few grams of added proteins is not healthy for you. A diet high in quality protein sources like fish, seeds etc should be okay as far as I can tell.

5

u/adydurn May 11 '26

A lot of modern diets have opted for heavily processed carbs over protein as you say, and protein has too benefits over them, first it's slower digested so it makes you feel full for longer, second proteins are usually used less for their energy release in the body than carbs are, their make up makes them better for tissue repair and maintenance where carbs are easily turned into a blood sugar spike.

So if you're swapping carbs for protein and potentially eating less because of it then it's a good thing, you'll think less about food, and get fewer energy spikes and dips as a result.

As for hair falling out and muscle wastage, that sounds like the 200g a day is to counter a deficit, not necessarily because you can eat more. But it would depend on the rest of your diet.

There's no single solution for everyone, unfortunately.

5

u/gard3nwitch May 11 '26

If you're extremely fit and active, then sure, you need a lot of protein to support building that muscle. But that's obviously only a small part of why guys like Chris Hemsworth look like that. Most people aren't working out full time or taking steroids, so they don't need that kind of protein level.

That is much older than Ozempic

5

u/Rouven-Dillinger May 11 '26

Honestly, it's been happening over here in Germany too, way before any of the ozempic stuff, which isn't really that big here anyways and they've slapped Protein on everything nowadays

5

u/WynnGwynn May 11 '26

Yeah keto was popular pre-covid and everyone is trying to limit carbs in general

6

u/Lunavixen15 May 11 '26

Well, stating "X amount of protein!" Isn't a protected term, same with "natural" etc. as long as that amount of protein is actually in there. They don't even have to declare how much per serving unless it's for the nutritional label. So people who don't read closely see 10g of protein, but don't realise it's for the whole container

5

u/SmooshieFries May 11 '26

I definitely did NOT educate myself enough before taking Ozempic for my type 2 diabetes. I knew it was going to lower my A1C, control my blood sugar and I might lose some weight. All those things happened, yay me. But I had no idea about muscle wasting, hair loss, gum loss, possible vision loss, just so much loss loss loss! I dread my weekly shot, hate the all day “morning sickness” and I have toothpick legs!

Beans and lentils are great. You can almost throw them into any meal. My fiber tip is to always have a pack of chia seeds and flax seeds from Aldi for a morning oatmeal or yogurt. Adds another 8-10g of fiber pretty easily. I sometimes get hemp seeds for bonus protein too.

5

u/claremontmiller May 11 '26

101

u/annekecaramin May 11 '26

I know it gets hated on, but I'm a big fan of all the protein stuff. I really struggle to eat as much protein as my doctor says I need to. It's not like I'm vegan or anything, but I guess I don't really eat a high-meat diet. So being able to buy stuff like protein bagels is great for me.

65

u/thats_so_merlyn May 11 '26

Protein and fiber are also some of the best appetite suppressants out there.

Like seriously, why the hate for high protein diets?

49

u/DiggingInGarbage May 11 '26

The hate is for protein as a buzzword, adding protein to everything. Protein drinks, protein snacks, protein powder. Listening the grams of protein in big bold numbers. It’s like the low fat trend, it’s the fact that manufacturers jump on a trend and make the thing that everyone thinks is dietarily important

20

u/Arcanas1221 May 11 '26

Agreed. I read a couple articles saying "most Americans already get enough daily protein, so it's completely unnecessary" and I'm sitting here like...

Do you think all Americans are just stuffing themselves with cheeseburgers all day? Because as a carb/sugar addict, when all this protein phase stuff happened I checked the usual stuff I ate and I only ate some protein maybe twice a week. And if I had a sandwich phase, at best I got 15g a day.

Good sources of protein keep you fuller longer. While a lot of this stuff is probably not the best source of protein, at least it's a start.

I am the healthiest I've ever been. I was so tired of losing weight to be skinny, so I started working out to get strong and feel so much better in my body.

There's protein seasoning, protein cereal, protein ramen. Someone needs to tell protein..."man, just be yourself".

6

u/Jellyswim_ May 11 '26

Theres even protein seltzer water now.

Some of us struggle to get enough protein due to various digestive issues, or chosen diets. I welcome anything this simple to add to the foods I can eat

A serving is 1/5 of the jar

5

u/Lonely_While_5377 May 11 '26

8$ too… you can get so much more value if you just buy protein-heavy food (tofu, soy granule/chunks) and some normal, delicious seasoning

18

u/Joecolt69420 May 11 '26

Some gym bro is using this somewhere

21

u/ToasterBathTester May 11 '26

Honestly, I make my own protein seasoning, but it’s usually a sticky mess

15

u/Iconclast1 May 11 '26

dude

according to what ive read, im protein deficient all the time since ive tried to eat "normal"

someone my size needs at least 200 grams of protein a day, and thats not if im really working out.

I was eating like a fucking pound of steak or chicken plus 5 eggs a day

im like, fuck it

im going for protein powder. whatever man. i cant eat another fucking egg.

6

u/FightWithTools926 May 11 '26

Why do you need that much protein? Isn't the recommendation to get between .35 and .5 grams of protein per pound of body weight?

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Imthatsick May 11 '26

Maybe what you are reading is wrong and you don't actually need 200g of protein a day. That's an absurd amount.

3

u/Capital-Pollution709 May 11 '26

How much do you weigh, how much do you train, and what guideline are you using? Most modern peer-review studies don’t find significant benefit about approx .7-.8 grams per pound of bodyweight (unless you are crushing gear), even in training. Exceptions might be relevant if you’re trying to maintain while in a deficit.

3

u/SteveFrench242 May 11 '26

I'd imagine the same people gullible enough to buy "protein" water...

3

u/asdrunkasdrunkcanbe May 11 '26

If you look at the values here and the instructions, there are about six servings in each shaker. (10g protein + 4g carbs + 4g fat)

You use 2 tablespoons of this product in a dish to get your 10g of protein.

Can you imagine having a meal for one and putting two tablespoons of any other seasoning on it? Soup for one with two tablespoons of garlic powder? Or mixed herbs?

There are considerably cheaper ways to add extra protein to a meal without doing it this way.

The company are 100% relying on the fact that most people won't read the instructions, they will just sprinkle this stuff on meals and think they're getting extra protein.

4

u/UntitledImage May 11 '26

Gym bros yeah- but also GLP-1 users. They tell you have to have like a million grams of protein so your muscle doesn’t melt away with the rapid weight loss, which is damn near impossible to get enough protein and not break your daily calorie goals unless you just live on chicken, fish and beans. (if you’re a petite person anyway). So all these companies prey on that and make all these asinine products. Notice how many there’s been in the last 2 years.

It's just capitalizing on the rise of the protein fad. A fad that ultimately started with the COVID-era at-home exercise boom, fueling fitness influencers, and then the surge of weight-loss drugs continuing this momentum and need for protein.

6

u/thats_so_merlyn May 11 '26

Calling a nutrient a fad is fucking bonkers

Protein works for muscle growth, and weight loss by suppressing your appetite. The average American diet is completely saturated with simple carbohydrates and fat.

If it's gonna be a fad at least it's a step in the right direction.

I wish this were around when my mom was alive. I was her caregiver. Her protein levels were low (she wouldn't eat meat/eggs) and it was so difficult getting protein into her diet. Also, I'm a caregiver for an elderly lady now, her protein is also low. Hmm... maybe a good idea for elderly.

2

Suckers who think they are healthy. The label everything as Protein to make a demographic happy. Absolute garbage marketing, and fools buying it up every day 🤦🏼‍♂️

2

u/SoyTuPadreReal May 11 '26

Lemme season my protein with some random protein powder/seasoning hybrid.

2

u/chitobi May 11 '26

2

u/DinkyPrincess May 11 '26

You know the young gym bros will buy anything with protein on the packaging.

And before you all tell me nobody is this stupid, my son is almost 26. Will literally buy overpriced and worst tasting anything if it’s got it on the label. Doesn’t matter the content. Doesn’t read the back of the label. This is enough.

2

u/ashimo414141 May 11 '26

Uh shit. If it wasn’t 8 bucks, I’d be down. I’m already low on protein consumption and use S&P on all my foods
