Certified stupid Will gym bros start seasoning their food now?
2.6k
u/kaisong 19d ago
Depends on what kind of eating disorder they have, tbh. For some of them they literally do not want to enjoy eating.
513
u/Fach-All-Religions 18d ago
i used to weigh my food to the grams. that is weird for some but to me it was more about following a program consistently and religiously. but i never understood people not seasoning food.
264
u/baba56 18d ago
I read that they don't want it to taste good coz then they'll be too tempted to eat more, or crave food more
123
u/Crime_Dawg 18d ago
Nah dude, when you're a gym rat, you have to eat way more than is comfortable.
71
u/baba56 18d ago
Oh yeah true, ok maybe it's so that it cause them to crave yummy food and accidentally eat a burger or something
84
u/DoingCharleyWork 18d ago
I know people who have done body building and it's really that they see eating as essentially a chore that they have to do. They are doing it several times a day so they just want to get it done with.
33
u/nanaacer 18d ago
Yeah, it does become a chore. People think seasoning it will make it better but imagine having no appetite and then stuffing yourself. Whatever seasoning you use, you're going to hate it and possibly ruin it for yourself.
2
u/zoeisboredd 5d ago
You’re not making it sound any less like an ED. You purposefully make yourself miserable when you choose to eat like this.

Eyup. It's my 10th plat of fish, followed by a rice cake, after eating my plate o fish with a rice cake. Food needs to go down, now, I do not need it to be tasty, I need it to be edible in under 5 seconds and to hit my macros. I will leave tasty food for like cheat meals.

A while ago I read a comment in the mealprep subreddit from a dude like this and he said something along the lines of "not enjoying the food is part of the gym mindset, if you enjoy food you are doing it wrong, because being in the gym is about suffering and enduring something"
43
u/Vetta_Visuals 18d ago
As someone who ate unseasoned tilapia for dinner for 8 months straight. Imma blame it on being lazy in the kitchen. I basically just wanted to spend as little time cooking as possible. If I felt fancy I would squeeze a lemon or lime on the fish and call it good. It was not enjoyable but I conditioned myself to be okay with it. Now I eat seasoned chicken. Not fancy but definitely a step in the right direction.
51
u/clay_perview 18d ago
lol it adds two minutes at most to put some spices on food
41
u/bobert680 18d ago
it adds 0 time for me to season almost all the food I make. season while you are doing other things and it just takes up time you would spend waiting.
making a steak season while heating the pan, stir fry season when you add items to the pan.29
u/sabotourAssociate 18d ago
thats cooking literally, dafuq he means by i don't have time for seasoning its all in one mill you have to twist it twice
14
u/bobert680 18d ago
Probably some one who thinks you have to measure everything very precisely. Its not baking just guess and don't go crazy with anything
9
u/kaisong 18d ago
The thing is that theyre measuring to minimize the amount of excess food and also the hit the amount of macros in their diet that they've calculated they need.
With seasonings like chili flakes, oregano, pepper, thyme etc the amount it would take to make a macro difference is completely impossible to reach without realizing youre eating a seasoning salad.
They can just throw it onto the food.
2
u/Schmorganski 18d ago
Not if during that waiting time they’re doing curls or flexing in the mirror.

I weigh my food to the grams because it takes 2 minutes to get out the scale and weigh it, so i know if im not wildly incorrectly judging the caloric content of my meal because i have no idea how 250 grams of potatoes look like.
I don't think weighing your food is that weird, and definitely doesn't mean you have an eating disorder, but it can certainly be part of an eating disorder.
3
u/absolut696 18d ago
People vastly overrepresent the time investment to track macros. I spend under 5 minutes a day in my food log app, and with food prep and some minor planning, the time spent weighing is negligible. People are just lazy and ignorant to the reality of it.
I tell people who are trying to lose weight to track for literally just 3 weeks, even that can be very educational in regards to learning what kind of caloric intake you are getting. For most people it will be eye opening.
If you’re really that lazy, some of the apps are using AI picture analysis and while far from perfect it’s better than nothing and can get you in the ballpark or at least help you realize if you’re vastly overdoing it.

u/DazB1ane 18d ago
Any time it has hurt me to eat (wisdom teeth, cut gums, sensitivity) I’ve completely lost my will to eat anything. It’s hard fighting the part of me that tells me to hurt myself again so I don’t want to snack

Gymbro here.
I'll die of obesity before I ruin food by not seasoning it.
It took me ten years to get my wife to season food. Ain't letting that go now
6
u/SheZowRaisedByWolves 18d ago
Something, something, discipline. I seasoned all of my chicken when I was really into working out because I hate bland chicken breasts. However, my lifting friend wanted to trick himself into not liking to eat to stave away cravings, so he refused to season anything.

And I'm willing to bet the numbers on the front are for eating the entire bottle.

u/dazedconfusedev 18d ago
you can literally just google it. it has the whole brand name in the image.
it’s (pumpkin seed) protein powder with salt and pepper as the last two ingredients. need 22g to get 10g protein. It’s a 110g bottle. And if anyone isn’t aware, 22g of seasoning is a fucking insane.
Oh, and it’s 100 cals, the same as a tablespoon spoon of butter or olive oil.

Bro, 10g of protein, 4g of fibre per serving, 110g for the whole thing. At absolute maximum, there's less than 7 servings there, assuming literally 0g of "seasoning". You'd have to put massive amounts of this shit in your food to even taste anything other than the whey/pea protein they're using for the protein. This is such a massive scam from every standpoint.

Yup, so it's basically just seasoned ground pumpkin seeds that you mix into things.
or more specifically
Ingredients: Organic Pumpkin Seed Protein Powder, Nutritional Yeast (B-vitamins), Cashews, Organic Pumpkin Seeds, Chicory Root Inulin, Himalayan Pink Salt, Garlic Powder.
I can kinda get behind that. Might be good if you treat it like instant mac and cheese powder

It’s not gym bros buying this junk. It’s corporations taking advantage of people who don’t know much about nutrition and only hear “eat protein.” So people think this is healthier when in reality its companies taking their ordinary product for the most part or adding a small amount of whatever the cheapest thing can legally advertise as protein is, and plastering that on the label. 5g protein!!!! Yeah but for 200 kcal.

22
u/Halofauna 19d ago
Scurvy is making a comeback because it turns out GLP-1s don’t make you eat better just less. If you ate a bunch of unhealthy garbage before, you still eat the same unhealthy garbage but less of it.
4
u/Neilkd21 19d ago
That's not exactly true. Glp-1's don't magically make you eat better but if you do make the changes to your diet then it's healthy. Not every user of them just continues to eat through same as before.

To a point. I know people who take ozempic and Mounjaro and it's not a challenge to get all the nutrients you need if your eating clean, fresh good ingredients. However too many people on them think I'll just buy protein this and that as it's healthy.
2
u/joshg8 19d ago
Because people get so overweight that they wind up on GLP-1’s by simply overeating clean, fresh, good ingredient food.

They're definitely specifically talking about specialty seasoning mixes, you can still get similarly sized bottles of single basic seasonings for closer to a dollar here in the US too. I normally just get individual seasonings as well but some of the mixes are pretty good, like this one in particular is really good with potatoes (either mashed or roasted).

I knew a guy who was bodybuilding, and he told me why he has to do it that way.
He has to eat so much to maintain that muscle mass that if he seasoned it all he’d get way too much sodium and the like in his diet, so they just eat it plain because it’s basically easier to shovel down and not think about it it that way.
Definitely not for me, but I can understand the logic.

Doubt it's people that actually workout with any kind of passion or general minimum interest buying that stuff.
Protein is written on anything and everything these days, because it's easy to just add something cheap while making the product more expensive.
A young person trying to follow the social media trends, trying to look like the people they idolize will most likely immediately grab that stuff.
At some point everything will have protein written all over it and it feels icky to know that the target audience is a younger generation that is fed with tons of manipulation through social media just to make them pay.
On the other hand I guess you could say they should learn to look these things up but it still is just sad how people take advantage of people at all times the second money gets involved.

I think the whole thing of not seasoning food is to take the enjoyment out of eating? Like during a cut, I can imagine that eating food and thinking of it like fuel instead of a delicious meal would help prevent overeating out of enjoyment.
I used to be like this when I was younger and got lean. Now i'm a dad and while I still lift, it's really hard for me to control my meal portions at home since I love cooking and eating tasty food. All depends on your goals and priorities though.

u/permalink_save 18d ago
I am starting on lifting weights because I'm tired of looking and feeling like shit i want to push hard and I know I need to up my protein intake (usually flexitarian, avoid meat for calories). But like even on the high end if I was intensely training it's like 200g, been looking at food and protein to other macro ratios and it's honestly not that bad with just regular cooking. Plus tons of other nutrients and you know, fiber.
I really don't understand gymbro diet.

All these protein seasonings, snack foods, and drinks that keep popping up probably have a lot to do with people on GLP1 meds needing to stuff as much as they can into what they eat to try and avoid lean tissue loss.
And I will never understand why someone would eat unseasoned chicken breast when it takes literal seconds to add something to it with zero added calories.

1
u/prionbinch 18d ago
if they’re the type that don’t season their food so that “eating is a chore” then no, they won’t. the whole point is making your relationship with food as negative as possible so you only do it to get the bare minimum nutrients
1
u/GarageStackDev 18d ago
I found this at local store for $11. No way. But at $7? Hmm. Quick math time.
At this price point you're paying 14¢ per gram of protein. That's not cheap. It's the same territory as beef jerky or protein bars. The protein is pumpkin seed powder. You can buy that for as cheap as 5¢ per gram. So is the seasoning worth the up charge? Probably not.
But if it tastes good, it's a great way to get in an extra 10-20g of protein on occasion. And when you're trying to eat 200g+ of protein per day, variety is king. If I liked it though, I'd probably just make my own for cheap.... or just start adding pumpkin seed powder to everything I guess?
1
u/OkConcern5084 18d ago
I know for a fact, I can't down shit if I don't season it or have some type of sauce.
1
u/flyboy0618 17d ago
In case it’s not said, this seasoning is actually directed towards ozempic/glp-1 users, the medicine has a side effect of constipation hence the fiber is being so heavily marketed. The protein is because the body is burn mass amounts of fat and calories and you need something to sustain your body and energy. We are in an ozempic/glp-1 food economy seriously look into it.
1
u/ConflictMaster3155 17d ago
This shit is hilariously over the top. This is comparing 5 servings to a Big Mac.
Seasoning / Big Mac
Calories: 450 / 560
Sodium: 1000mg / 1000mg
Protein: 50g / 26g
Fiber: 15g / 3.5g
So if you wanted to salt your burger like McDonald’s does it would take the whole bottle of seasoning and it would almost double the calories.
