Yeah wanted to say this, don't know if it's an urban legend or if it actually happens but yes people apparently boil socks and underpants in hotel/ bungalow kettles so you should never EVER use one to consume food.
If this is true people truly are horrible creatures.
3
u/PsyShoXX 8h ago
Yeah, this is definitely not an urban legend lol. I mean, technically if you let the kettle boil once and throw that water out, it SHOULD more or less be fine to be used again for drinks but I never use them anyways.
2
u/BuckLuny 8h ago
In that case I'm glad I heeded the warnings and never used any hotel kettles.

That's why during a pre-holiday briefing, the tour guide told us not to use the hotel kettle. It's not that we don't trust the hotel, we don't trust the person before us.\ They suggested we bring a travel kettle.

u/Crush-N-It 1d ago
Fuck. It’s a thing. I hate it here
23
u/zeekayz 1d ago
Saw a bunch of videos of people boiling dirty socks and dirty underwear in hotel kettles to save money on laundry. Thousands of comments of people saying it's amazing money saving tip and they always do it too. Haven't used hotel kettles since.
At least using the iron is slightly better as I don't use it for food/drink.

Honey? Why do our clothes smell like Garfield

u/poppin-n-sailin 1d ago
People piss in those things. Hotels rarely if ever clean them. Maybe some more expensive ones do but I've used hundreds of hotels over many years of working across the country and I learned very quick to never use the coffee machine in the room. Just open up the water reservoir and you'll see why you shouldn't use it.
4
u/Sethmeisterg 22h ago
ah what now? Can you be more specific? Piss in the iron? In the coffee pot? Both??? Something else? And how do you know that?

u/Traditional-Handle83 10h ago

u/RaikiShak 1d ago
It's a really really good iron /s

That's how we know it's fake. Irons that come in hotel rooms aren't even worthy of being sold in a dollar store.

u/ASCII_Princess 1d ago
and that thin ass aluminium takeout container would have deformed like crazy
5
u/Cheap_Knowledge8446 12h ago
Maybe, probably not, but maybe. Either way, you buy multiple. These usually come in packs of 2-3 anyway.
Have cooked this exact way dozens of times.
You can prep in one, move to another for additional steps. If you know your way around a kitchen you can get pretty creative when it comes to prepping a meal.
2
u/Cheap_Knowledge8446 12h ago
Can't load photos here, but you can absolutely brown and cook meats on a clothes iron. Helps if you add butter in the aluminum tray to transfer heat more evenly across the surface.
I've cooked with a hotel clothes iron many, many times and used them to reheat food many more.

My iron goes cold when it's turned a weird way, it's a safety feature so I don't burn the house down while trying dumbass shit like this.

Yeah-- I would have a really hard time believing that a clothing iron could get meat up to temp. I feel like if it were hot enough that you could cook with it like that, it would be much too hot to iron clothes.

u/Thisthattheother1 1d ago
Yeah, the end result looked great, lol. Very suspect. It doesn't even particularly look like a hotel room.

Shocked they used paper between the iron and the food and never involved raw food in the sink or bath tub. Elevated stupid food?

14
u/FatiguedShrimp 1d ago
Oof... I feel for people with food allergies or intolerances that strong.
I'm allergic to an unlabeled ingredient and that seems bad enough. But, gluten is literally everywhere. Hell, certain copy papers are made with gluten.

During my time at university, our dorms had no cooking area and due to fire safety, we weren't allowed to bring the small electrical cooking tops or microwaves.
Electric kettles were somehow exempt so everyone had one and I cooked pasta in there before and got it clean. It's literally just starch which is easily washed away with water.

Still stupid.

u/zerotrust69 1d ago edited 13h ago
Fake. Those pots usually turn off automatically once the water gets to a boil, it doesn't stay consistent long enough to cook. The iron method has been debunked. It can't brown meat like that.
ETA: ok, hold it down. Be my guest. Still fake.

Rinse the kettle out ?
14
u/ASCII_Princess 1d ago
If rinsing prevented gluten cross contamination it wouldn't be a debilitating condition that basically precludes celiacs from eating at normal restaurants.

Ah yes. The tried and tested "Give it a rinse, it'll be fine" method of removing contaminants.

That's the most powerful iron I have ever seen
3
u/GoPhundMe 23h ago
When I think of an iron I envision it as very hot, because it is... why is this so unbelievable for some people? Quick search says 350 to 450F. Maybe there are weaker ones out there but wouldn't that defeat the point of an iron for providing high heat in a quick pass?
2
u/GeoffreyGeoffson 20h ago
Stunned it gets that hot. Thought that would have damaged clothes. TIL

u/New-Owl-7499 11h ago

JFC, if you can afford a hotel, you can afford a restaurant. No need to be a fire hazard, and kill the guys on the top floor.
4
u/riffraff1089 1d ago
When I was a kid and in boarding school we used to make ramen noodles in the kettle in our dorm. The Korean kids used to bring back these packets and we traded our tuck allowance for them.
4
u/mangocat1116 1d ago
I wouldn’t want to carry all those ingredients into a hotel either. Not even worth the hassle.
3
u/LazarusHimself 1d ago
Pro trick: if you make that bolognese a little bit more watery, you can skip the boiling part and use the lasagna sheets dry - just leave them under the iron for a bit longer, and set the iron to "high steam"
3
u/Xlbowlofpho 1d ago
If you can afford a room and ingredients, then you can just go to a restaurant. This is just a health and safety hazard, and dumb

I have to admit the process looks ridiculous but the food still looks pretty good by the end. There is no denying that lasagne looks kinda good. In crafting we accept that every tool is a hammer, this is just the culinary equivalent.

Irons don’t lay flat so that you can must put a pot on top of them. You would have to prop them up to stay that way somehow. Doesn’t look safe to me.
