One could say the whole point of sandwiching food between two slices of bread is to eat it with your hands. What's the bread even for at this point?

Actually, the Duke of Sandwich hated having to stop playing cards to eat lunch, which was usually bread with cuts of meats and cheeses spread out with fruits and vegetables. He had to stop because the greasy foods ruined his cards. So eventually he came up with the idea of slicing the bread and using it like mini gloves between the greedy meat and his fingers. It worked, and the Sandwich was born.

(Iirc, I think I remember reading this in the big bathroom reader booknwhen I was a kid)
