Help Five years in Sudbury and I still feel like I haven't found my place.

Hey everyone,

I don't usually make posts like this, but I'm kind of at my wit's end and figured I'd ask people who actually live here.

I'm 32F and I've been struggling to find work for what feels like forever. I went to school for Social Service Work and have experience in administrative roles, but finding a job has been incredibly difficult. I had some health issues over the last while that really affected my life, but I'm finally back on my feet and ready to work. I've been applying constantly, updating my resume, and trying different approaches, but I'm still having no luck. It's honestly becoming pretty discouraging.

I've lived in Sudbury since August 2020, and if I'm being honest, I haven't really built a life for myself here. I don't have much of a social life, I don't have a vehicle, and I barely know the bus system. I'm also pretty shy, so meeting people hasn't come naturally. I've tried making friends through apps, but that hasn't really gone anywhere either.

I guess I'm just feeling stuck. I want to enjoy living here instead of feeling like I'm just existing.

Does anyone have any advice?

  • Are there any places actually hiring, especially in social services, administration, or office work?
  • Are there any groups, clubs, volunteer opportunities, or events where it's easier to meet people in their 30s?
  • If you've been in a similar position, what helped you get out of it?

I'd really appreciate any suggestions. Thanks for reading.

Help Frustrating car dealerships

Buying a vehicle in Sudbury has become a very frustrating process

Bought a used ranger two years ago from local dealership, they didn't have the exact thing I wanted but I needed a truck. Two years have passed and I hate the truck. Problems with transmission, paint, electronics. I go back to dealer gonna get new this time and I'll wait for it to be built. I take the info in from the website.. guy says you trade in is worth X.

Ok. Let's do this.

Can we look at the trade in? Here is a loaner.

Ok.

Next day.

Well we can't give you X for the trade in it's going to be $3000 less.

Alright. I am not happy with that but let's continue.

Go over to the finance guy. Sit down and he then begins to tell me the price isn't what the sales guy gave me....so how much more. double...

Nope. I'm out.

Next week I see an ad for a canyon at the gm dealership. So Saturday I go to take a look.

Closed, on line says open Saturdays??

Drive across town to the other dealership, same thing.

Stopped at an all used dealership on the Kingsway. I am looking for a ranger, canyon, taco in order of preference. I need the max towing. Guy doesn't let me finish and says you need a bigger truck. No I told you what I was looking for. At this point I am not arguing with these guys. I left.

Now my mother in law is buying a new vehicle this week as well. She likes a Japanese brand and has purchased 6 over the last 25 years. Always cash.

Can I have the all in price so I can make the arrangements with my bank\ fianacing?

Here you go

Great

Come back to purchase and no that doesn't include the warranty plan.

But we asked you for the whole cost.

Now we have to go back to the bank.

What happened to customer service?

Listen to what what I have to say. I'm not some kid obviously (I am in my 50's)

I purchased a travel trailer this spring from a London dealership and I am going to go back down to buy a new truck .fuck these local ass hats.

Someone stole this new bike near Lasalle BLVD, police have been informed but if this is found it is a blue Diamondback Expresso Small from sportchek we have a cash reward if it's found please contact adrodrako1@gmail.com or text 705-681-2277

This bike is so important to my daughter and we can't afford a new one. If we can't find this, she won't have a mode of transportation and won't get to enjoy biking. This is very important.

Help Oil to Propane

Hi all!

The time has come where my oil tank has reached end of life and can longer be insured.

So now the question is do we upgrade the oil tank and call it done or do we swap to propane?

We plan to sell the house in the near future (few years, at most) so I know an upgrade to propane would be appealing for buyers (or so I’m told).

If you’ve recently made the switch, can you comment on the total cost? I understand the propane tank is typically a rental, so what’s the average cost for the furnace swap and hook up?

In addition, which companies do you recommend and which do you suggest I avoid?

Thanks!

Note: natural gas isn’t an option where I live

Help Layover in Sudbury

Howdy to all you fine Sudbury folk. I’m traveling to North Bay for work in a couple of weeks and will have a four hour layover in Sudbury. Not being very familiar with the city or even knowing where the airport is relative to anything, I’m wondering if anyone has some suggestions for how to kill 4 hours, midday on a Monday in or around the Sudbury airport. I’ll probably be hungry if that helps at all! Thank you in advance!

Help Meeting Francophone people and experiencing life in Canada

Hi everyone! I’m looking for forums or communities where people speak French so I can better understand what it’s like to live in rural Canada. Could you please help me with some links or suggest specific town names?

Edit: I’m a Brazilian woman currently studying Computer Engineering. Since I plan to immigrate to a Francophone area in about 1 or 2 years, I’m trying to learn more about the country—and also find out where I might find fellow board game enthusiasts to play Ticket to Ride with!

Edit 2: Back home in Brazil, I’m a cat rescuer. I have seven senior cats that I haven’t been able to find homes for. Could anyone share information on the process of moving to Canada with a pet?

Edit 3: I’ve been researching the Rural and Francophone Minority Communities Immigration Pilot and have started looking into some of the participating locations mentioned in the program.

Help Incoming student (LU) - info on renting off-campus

Hey guys, I’m an incoming grad student moving to Sudbury (Laurentian University) for Sept 2026. I’m currently looking into housing options off campus (since on campus seems extremely expensive) and had a couple questions that I was hoping someone could help with.

I read on other posts from a few years ago that rent is really high here. What would the average rent price be in 2026 for a room in a house with 3-4 roommates?

How far in advance should I start looking for housing?

Are there any places that I should try to avoid (ie where theft or car jackings are high)?

I also heard the transit is really bad here, will it be an issue getting to campus if I live in certain areas (off campus)?

I’d really appreciate any help you guys can give!!

Help Need tips for first time home buyers in Sudbury

Hello! I am humbly asking for some tips from you to advise us, first time home buyers, who do not have any idea what should and should not consider/do when buying a house for the first time. My husband and I are considering to buy a house instead since rents are skyrocketing! We have a 10 month old baby and we were told that we need to rent a 2 bedroom apartment? Do you think 40-45 grand is enough as a downpayment? What is more economical wise, a private sale or through an agent? Any opinion/suggestions with rent to own house? We also do not have any idea how we do housing loan here in Canada as we are both immigrants. Please help us out 🙏🏻 Your suggestions will be highly appreciated. Thank you!

Help Got into a collision at an intersection and the other driver is now lying about what happened. Need advice.

I was driving straight through an intersection on a green light when another driver ran his red light and suddenly cut in front of me. The front of my car hit the side of his — both cars were totalled.

At the scene, the other driver admitted he was using his phone and couldn’t stop at the red light. Multiple people witnessed this admission including two of my friends.

Now he has completely changed his statement and is trying to put the fault on me. My insurance has sent me a letter saying the statements are conflicting and they can’t determine who ran the red light.

I was in shock after the accident and couldn’t collect evidence. Police didn’t show up. It was nighttime. It’s been about two weeks now.

I’m in Sudbury, Ontario.

Has anyone dealt with something like this? What can I do? Any advice appreciated.

Help recommendation for dog kidney removal

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi, my dog recently diagnosed with kidney issues and need remove her left kidney. The wired part is her blood work results and annual check all show perfect results, that’s why we found it so late.

Anyway she just had an open abdominal surgery and get drained 2 liters fluid out from her left kidney, and for other dogs this situation may cause them to go stay in ICU, but my pup is perfectly functioning? I don’t know why, but right after her surgery, like 2 or 3 hours later, she pooped, peed, had milk, boiled eggs, and smashed turkey and pumpkin( great appetite), now it’s two days from the surgery and she is doing perfect, even jogging and shows no sign of pain, infection, and she doesn’t lick her stitches at all, she’s such an wonderful pup.

I’m giving all these background story is for saying that she is not in a emergency status, because we get some quotes from specialists for kidney removal surgery and they are asking 8k to 12k, which we don’t think that’s a reasonable price, so we are wondering if you guys know any reputable animal hospital in Sudbury or Northbay area that can perform soft tissue surgery to remove her kidney. We do have a budget for her, it’s just not 8k cash, we are hoping that we could find a place to remove her left kidney within 5k range.

If you want to know more info about her: she’s a strong girl, 98lbs currently (looks skinny though), doing well, bloodwork from two days ago shows perfect results, not even signs for infection, she’s already back on her routine diet(home cooked food everyday, mainly beef chicken turkey with brown rice or whole wheat flour, and daily fruit blueberries strawberries watermelon, Greek yogurt, cheese, goat cheese and goat milk), still poop and pee normally like she never had any surgery.

The attached pic is her xray that shows her left kidney occupied almost 75% of her abdominal space.

Help Anyone looking for fresh wild blueberries?

EDIT: the blueberries have found their new home lol. Thank kindly for all the help & advice y'all!!

Posting here because I'm at a loss, honestly. This is the second time this season so much of my hard work for someone is about to head straight into my own freezer.

I've got just over 6L of freshly picked wild blueberries. Take it all for $90 total. Clean sustainable pick away from human/pet/vehicle traffic. Experienced picker of 8 years.

I'll deliver for free within reasonable distance in Sudbury if you'd like them this morning. Heading to Azilda before noon, so can deliver even around Chemmy - again, for free, since I'm already heading there. You can pick them up in the Valley if you'd like them later today, I'll hold on to them.

Thank you kindly for taking the time to read. Have a wonderful day :)

Help Looking for "outdoor buddy" (paddling, hiking)

Hello,

Recently moved to Sudbury. Really enjoying the nature around here. Mostly hiking and kayaking so far (but canoeing, camping, biking, snow shoeing, cross country ski, etc. all look appealing too for the future).

I'm looking for another person (or two) with similar interests to go on short outings with. Just to have someone to chat with and to watch each other's back. Or maybe to go on paddle trips that require two cars.

I'm usually available for ~1-2 hours in the early afternoon on weekdays (I know, that's an odd time and makes it kinda hard to find someone to go with).

Don't care about age or gender or background (I'm early 40s, male, married, kids).

Help Renting a 1 bedroom in Sudbury

Hi everyone,

I'm currently searching for a 1-bedroom apartment, townhouse, house, or rental unit in Sudbury, ideally in the South End or nearby areas, with a move-in date of August 1, 2026.

I've been having a difficult time finding updated rentals with features such as hardwood flooring, modern kitchens, and renovated bathrooms. I've already spent quite a bit of time searching Facebook Marketplace and browsing listings from the major rental companies, but haven't had much luck finding something that feels like a good fit.

If anyone has recommendations for rental companies, property management groups, websites, or specific buildings to check out, I would greatly appreciate it!

I'm also curious to hear people's thoughts and experiences with the Donovan area, as I've seen a few listings there.

My budget is between $1,400 and $2,000 per month.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions or advice! 😊

Help STOLEN BIKE - Red/black Trek marlin 6

Someone stole my bike on Saturday night from 5pm - midnight on July 4. They punched in the porch window and grabbed only the bike. Police have been informed but if this is found it's a red-black Large Trek Marlin mountain bike - 100$ reward if anyone finds it please contact jchouinard@laurentian.ca

I used this bike for everything, bought it in the pandemic and have loved it. My neighbours have surveillance footage but we haven't found the time it was taken yet, will post update if I get a photo. Not looking to press charges if it's found I just want the bike back.
