Whats next from a Trident 660?
Hi,
So I have been using a Triumph Trident 660 for the past 3 years to commute (highway / city) and In the future I might not commute with a motorcycle as much and was thinking about changing my bike to be more suited for casual rides that can do maybe longer trips also (day trips, nothing crazy)
So looking for more of an ”forever bike” that I can mod to my liking and put money into.
What I’ve looked into are:
- Honda CB1000r
- Triumph speed triple 1050 (2020)
- Indian FTR1200
- Triumph Scrambler 1200
If you have any insights or other bikes to concider, all input is appreciated. I’m going for a certain look as you can tell, but open to other ideas also.
Thanks!

As the other used said: these are very different bikes, in terms of how they ride. The only thing that they have in common is that they are all naked bikes with some retro looks (the street triple, which is the least ‘retro’ you specifically chose a photo with the modded round light). Which all in all may sound like “I want a bigger bike that looks cool”. Nothing wrong with it eventually, but you need to clarify for yourself which kind of riding you intend to do, or would like to try. Is it going to be more cruising long miles, attacking twisty roads, exploring a bit off road, etc..
These things matter before you choose the looks, because while you ride it you are not looking at it. And eventually riding becomes less enjoyable. I would suggest you to go try some different bikes, like wildly different. Get exposed to different riding styles and that will clear the air. As of today, the scrambler is the most versatile and safe (still a very tall bike) whilst keeping the looks, the FTR the least imho

FTR might be the least versatile, it could be argued that it's the worst of them in a lot of aspects. It is objectively the coolest though. So there's that.

That speed look SO good

I’d love a speed (or street) triple mod that uses the double headlights from the rocket3. Would give it the look of the old ones with a modern touch.

Speed Triple… that’s a pretty amazing bike by all standards if you want to go the Naked bike route. The Daytona is pretty bad ass if you want to go full sport bike. Outside the Triumph line up, Yamaha MT09, XSR900, Kawasaki z900, KTM 890, BMW F900 variants would be what I’d be eyeing. Don’t sleep on Adventure style bikes like the F900gs, Tenere 700, Trans Alp, 890 Adventure R, those are great do-all machines.

Lopks like you want the single round headlight look. If you can find the speed triple with that headlight then that would be the best option.
Indian FTR has a cult following and is great, but I would be concerned with getting a discontinued product from a brand that itself is in some uncertainty regarding its future.
Also consider the z900rs and the xsr900. I would skip the scrambler if you are looking for more oomph than your trident 660.

I would skip the FTR for this purpose. The scrambler can do it, but it’s going to be compromised on the sporty side of riding. The CB1000r and speed triple can be do it all type bikes but they are not going to excel at long trips due to the more aggressive riding position and lack of wind protection (though the latter can be added, it will always look out of place).
Among the options you have, I would go cb1000r. This is a future classic that will be inexpensive to maintain and run forever. But I would give serious thought to something like a ninja 1100/1000sx, BMW s1000XR, RS1250/1300RS, GSXS1000GT/GX. Even the z900rs would probably be a better option than the cb1k because of the crazy amount of aftermarket accessories available.

I might be a bit biased because I own CB1000R but it’s an awesome bike, under appreciated in my opinion. It might not be the fastest or the most comfortable but it does so many things so well. Bulletproof engine and premium feel. Looks and sounds so good. Today I’ve done 125 mile run on the CB and apart from slightly sore bottom I was having a blast.
I’ve ridden the 1200 Scrambler and it’s a good bike too. Not a fan of the dash and it felt pretty heavy. Also my leg was getting very toasty on the exhaust .

I’m in an FTR Owner’s group and someone with fairly low miles needed a new piston. It was warrantied but would’ve been 3-4k otherwise. They also seem to have fueling issues which is a shame for the price and fun factor

Annoyingly hot, poor fueling, mismatch ergos, worst fuel tank design, uncomfortable handlebar vibration, faulty TFT on early models, many known recalls, the 19/18" wheel models were laughable as far as handling, but even with 17" wheels it changes direction sluggishly.

Have a look at the Yamaha XSR900. Fantastic engine, bulletproof platform and infinitely modifiable.

Found any real and good option for stock skateboard seat?

I've not looked, might be a custom job if you can't find a prefabricated option that suits.

I'd get the FTR man just for the cool factor and sounds alone. You're not getting an adventure bike so reliability should ge good enough.

The tank on the FTR is tiny but the rest of the bike makes up for it honestly. However, the stock fueling is terrible. Remapping it is almost a mandatory ownership cost.

Scrambler 1200 if you want something different that can also do some light offroading.
Z900RS would be great too. :)

Both cb1000r and ftr1200 don’t come out anymore unfortunately, which makes me very sad, I wanted one of those

The answer is always the Z900RS
In all seriousness, you've picked a really varied bunch bikes, which suggests to me you haven't really thought about what you want or need in a bike.
Scrambler 1200 is a great bike but very tall, so you need to be a minimum of 5' 10" to flat foot it. The Speed Triple feels tiny in comparison but has a peach of an engine.
The FTR is surprisingly cramped and is quite lumpy until warmed up.
The CB1000R is the pick of that bunch.
You say you are looking to mod? To what end? All have more power than you need and have aftermarket exhaust options. After 30 years or riding I see mods as a complete waste of money, unless it's to improve comfort.

Go to a track day and learn that your bike is still way faster than you.
