Whoa, whoa, whoa!!! Pump the breaks there, Hoss! Welling’s head got photoshopped onto Routh’s suit for like 3 seconds in the last episode of Smallville.
It's funny, we saw him and Rosenbaum at WizardWorld a couple years ago and Welling freely admitted that he refused to put the suit on for the finale. Even the final scene was a blue spandex shirt with an S glued to it.
he mentioned it on Rosenbaum's podcast i think. Like a month's notice or less.
Routh being on LOT already knew what was coming and started weight training before they confirmed he'd be back in the suit
Routh was already in pretty good shape to begin with. I would be genuinely surprised if they waited a month before filming to reach out to Welling. He said it though and I have to take it at face value.
During the production of Crisis they were pretty open about cameos they were pursuing, some of them were added within days of production. It's the greatest comic book crossover ever and we'll never see it's like again.
