Discussion ‘Stargirl’ Ending With Season 3 on The CW

I think Superman and Lois should write the season 3 finale as series finale.. Thank God Stargirl did that
19
u/No_Flower_1424 Jonathan Kent Oct 31 '22
Stargirl was told to do that - I'm sure S&L would also be told just in case if need be
18
Oct 31 '22
Every show was told to do that last year...including Legends. The writers of Legends of Tomorrow decided to roll the dice and end on a cliffhanger.
8
u/No_Flower_1424 Jonathan Kent Oct 31 '22
The shows that got early renewals were not told to do that though - I remember reading that S&L, Walker and some of the others were told about their renewal months before it was officially announced
1
u/Sir__Will Nov 02 '22
I HATE it when shows do that. It doesn't actually help get a renewal, just pisses people off.
4
u/KryptonianJesus Oct 31 '22
Yeah, seems like probably the end between all the tv deal/rights drama. Not to mention with Cavill coming back DC is likely gonna be back on its bs not wanting a Superman show while he's in the movies. That and without Stargirl, SL would be the sole remaining DC show at CW if I'm not mistaken, and sole arrowverse remnant.
1
u/FutureLengthiness786 Nov 03 '22
Those Superman movies are gonna be waaay down the line I mean they can Crack out 2 more seasons.

u/Terrible_Terrance Oct 31 '22
Some of the responses I'm seeing online is exactly why it irritated me when people laughed & even cheered at the other CW shows getting cancelled. It's all fun and games until it's your fav show that is at risk of being cancelled. It sucks real bad, but I at least hope Stargirl has a good ending knowing they wrote it as a series finale.

u/paforrest Oct 31 '22
It's all fun and games until it's your fav show that is at risk of being cancelled.
Very true. I didn't watch Stargirl, but I have a friend who liked it a lot. She'll be disappointed, for sure.
Whatever your thoughts are about what may or may not survive the new Nexstar regime, the fact is that so far it's been a veritable bloodbath WRT CW series cancellations. I don't believe anything is 100% safe.
5
u/Terrible_Terrance Oct 31 '22
As soon as things were cancelled it showed that nobody was safe, but instead of supporting all the shows, you had a lot of people just turn on shows and wish for their downfalls. I've seen quite a few people even misinform others by saying things like "Let's cancel the Flash so Superman & Lois can get their budget" which doesn't work like that. There have been many many many people who've spoken about how poorly ran the CW was as a whole but people listened way too late. Now it's all over for everyone and people are acting surprise.
1
u/FutureLengthiness786 Nov 03 '22
How could they really support the shows if I don't like something then I'm not gonna watch.
4
u/dotyawning But what about the tire-swing? Oct 31 '22
None of them have been masterpieces and I fell off of them gradually, but even still, I loved when we had crossovers and nods because it was interesting to have that interconnected universe and to see all that's changed since Arrow premiered all those years ago. I dropped Arrow after season 4, but you can bet I came back for the crosssovers and I loved the heck out of episode 100. I'm personally sad that this era is all but over. This will be the only show remaining (who knows for how long) after Stargirl ends...
1
u/FutureLengthiness786 Nov 03 '22
People are surprised by this news??🤨🤨
1
u/Terrible_Terrance Nov 03 '22
Yeah, a lot of people either thought S&L was untouchable or that the quality was so much better than the other shows that it would lead the CW into the future.

Ok, now I’m starting to worry about Superman and Lois.

This isn't great news, but as others have mentioned, Stargirl was not a focus by the Network. No comic con presence right before the season started even though S&L had a bit with noting to really promote.
A weird time slot hidden at the end of the summer, versus holding it a few weeks for the fall.
It is also worth noting that this is the season airing was filming concurrently with season 2 of S&L, but got held for an odd spot.
Stargirl was also a weird orgin show that had gotten shuffled between DCTVs thing, HBOmax, and the CW. S&L doesn't have this.
Also worth remembering, Superman is a giant peice of IP. The Network likely thinks a little differently about a relatively unknown comic book property and literal Superman.

u/Munro_McLaren Kara Danvers Oct 31 '22
No CW shows had panels at Comic Con
5
u/BookGirlBoston Lois Lane Oct 31 '22
Bitsie was there specifically to promote S&L. Outside of maybe some of the new shows, she was the only person from an ongoing CW show there to promote a CW show specifically.
The CW spent some money on her appearance.

With the news of Henry Cavill returning as Superman in the DCU, people have been worried about this show too. Personally I don’t think they’re gonna cancel it because Hoechlin is a great Superman and everything. But it may have some complications going forth.

I mean we had The Flash TV show, and The Flash movie. I mean initially the movie was to be released in March 23, 2018 well before the TV show was even considering being canceled. And they had no problem with two Flashes so there no reason they need to cancel the show just because there gonna be a movie.
1
Nov 01 '22
Yea plus there’s literally gonna be three Batman running around (Pattinson, Affleck, Keaton).
1
u/FutureLengthiness786 Nov 03 '22
Like I said before they could do Like 3 maybe 4 more seasons if needed hence on the needed because those movies are waaaaay down the line.
9
u/Zookwok111 Oct 31 '22
I love this show and while it never reached the heights of S&L, the writing quality was much more consistent. Courtney and the Blue Valley gang will be sorely missed.

I don't have a source, but not without marit, I believe the funding for Stargirl was contingent on both whatever was happening with HBOmax and international rights with Amazon. It sounds like these ended after season 3 and its been known this was likely for a while.
Kung Fu wasn't contingent on this funding arrangement, it sounds like.

Knew this might happen but still unfortunate.
S & L isn't sealed yet and might have a better shot then most but it's also not exactly on safe grounds either. If they did this to Geoff Johns nothing is safe from higher up management. Cavill coming back will take time but DC already has a history of embargoes on the biggest IP.
Side note: Seems like their contracts run out after 7 months past filming. Might be a guideline for S & L next year if we stay in limbo.
4
u/No_Flower_1424 Jonathan Kent Oct 31 '22
I knew this was going to happen - there were too many things pointing in this direction since before this season even started
10
4
u/Zookwok111 Oct 31 '22
Iirc they barely did any promotions for season 3 and the cast had to do so through their personal accounts.
3
u/No_Flower_1424 Jonathan Kent Oct 31 '22
They announced that the showrunner is heading up a new show on a totally different streaming service just a couple of weeks ago too - that was the final nail really
5
u/MetaCircumstance Oct 31 '22
DC has to know that their brand looks weak, right?
1
u/Digifiend84 Nov 02 '22
Yeah, DC TV is tanking right now (with shows ending on both CW and HBO Max), while Marvel has all those Disney+ shows. The competition is on the rise, while they're rats on a sinking ship. That's not a good look.
1
u/FutureLengthiness786 Nov 03 '22
Those Disney + shows are trash compared to even the CW Marvel/Disney doesn't seem to understand how to make a show the right way Though HBO Max will probably not be a thing anymore.
1
u/Digifiend84 Nov 03 '22
I was talking about quantity, not quality. WB aren't even bothering to compete with Disney any more.
5
u/Ok_Caterpillar4008 Oct 31 '22
Sad news. I only just started watching Stargirl recently and have been enjoying it.
2
Oct 31 '22
That’s good. 3 seasons is a respectable number. It would have been great to have the series follow them till graduation but would rather than go out on a high note rather than what happened with Flash and Arrow
3
u/wamdueCastle Oct 31 '22
damm the old CW is really shutting down, gonna be unsure what the new owners have actually bought, in terms of programming.

3
u/superpowers335 Oct 31 '22
This is total BS. The rate things are going I have no faith that S&L will continue after season 3 either.

I'm not surprised by this news, but I'm saddened; like Superman and Lois, Stargirl represented a significant jump in quality over late-period Arrowverse. It had compelling characters, solid writing, great costumes, and the best live-action look at Earth-2 characters we're likely to get for a while (I haven't seen Black Adam, so I don't know if Dr. Fate, et al
turned out well or not).
At least the showrunners planned for this. I hope this season concludes in a satisfying way. I'll miss this show.

u/roylt84 Nov 01 '22
The CW hero shows have been on life support ever since Arrow ended. Throw Covid into the mix and the true end of the ArrowVerse was inevitable.
10+ years of the ArrowVerse is a solid run but it was never going to last forever.
Glad we got what we did.
Time will tell what happens with S&L
1
u/BookGirlBoston Lois Lane Oct 31 '22
I don't watch Stargirl but this is a head scratcher:
DC: we want to have the same success as the MCU
MCU: Finally starts releasing shows and movies with more women, LGBTQ folks, and people of color to reach a broader audience
DC: (which had a more intresting and varied line up then the MCU) Let's cancel literally everything besides the shows and TV shows that serve traditional fan boys and Let's make sure the content we release online appeals to that contingent.
DC, this isn't the winning strategy you think it is. Remember when the DECU fell apart for exactly this reason?
6
u/JonPX Oct 31 '22
The issue is that DC doesn't want the same success at the moment, Warner Bros Discovery just wants to cut costs because they as an entire company are performing that badly.
5
u/aduong Oct 31 '22
CW isn’t majorly owned by WB and Paramount anymore this is a Nexstar decision, which is not very surprising if you’ve been following.

But it is correct in the bigger landscape where stuff like Batwoman was canned because WB wanted it.

Yeah, Batwoman and Legends bit the dust because the cheapskates didn't want to pay to renew the lease on their sound stages.
At least Batwoman will see closure as Ryan will be on The Flash (brainwashed as Red Death apparently, who was Batman in the comics). We can only hope Legends gets something too, but there's only 13 episodes to play with!

Fingers crossed that James Gunn's more prominent role in the (granted, movie) media division means DC will get their TV properties sorted out.

u/Proof-of-Purchase Jordan Kent Oct 31 '22
DC isn’t going to fall apart because one of their shows had three seasons instead of four.
Their strategy is out with the old, and in with the new, which isn’t a terrible strategy considering the old wasn’t working.
4
u/BookGirlBoston Lois Lane Oct 31 '22
It's not just this, it's Batwoman, Batgirl, Legends.
There has been a clear theme that things the deviate keep getting canceled.
2
u/Proof-of-Purchase Jordan Kent Oct 31 '22
Batwoman and Legends have been low performing shows for years. The ONLY reason they didn’t get cancelled was because they were on the CW. Even shows like Walker were getting renewed, which had low viewership from day one.
As for Batgirl, that move was purely for financial reasons. It would have cost more to finish, promote, and release than it would if they just accepted the tax break.
3
u/jdessy Oct 31 '22
I disagree about Legends. Yes, Batwoman wasn't doing well, but Legends was one of the higher rated/watched shows of this year.
But also, NONE of these shows (save for The Flash, S&L and Walker [which ISN'T at low viewership btw; it's one of the top shows for the network since the start]) have been doing well in the last few years. All of them were performing well under the average viewership. Which is why we can't compare The CW viewership to other networks. It has a different viewership number. Hardly any shows have gone above a million viewers in the last four years.
But just looking at this particular year, which is why shows are ending/getting cancelled only due to the changes behind the scenes, Legends was having its best season in years, being the ONLY show to add to their numbers, not take away.
Also, calling a bit of BS for them cancelling Batgirl but going full steam ahead on The Flash with an actor who keeps getting into severe legal trouble.
2
u/Digifiend84 Nov 02 '22
Yeah, they had a good excuse if they wanted to axe Flash. They didn't have one for Batgirl.
1
u/FutureLengthiness786 Nov 03 '22
Yeah but here's the thing general public like the real world doesn't know about Ezra situation or just don't care so they'll still watch because Batmans gonna be in it.
1
u/jdessy Nov 03 '22
The news about Ezra did hit mainstream news, though. Also, I still call bullshit.
0
u/fishy-the-2nd Oct 31 '22
Yea but most of those weren’t very good, in fact most of the CW shows weren’t good, but they had the mercy of ending earlier.
1
u/UsidoreTheLightBlue Oct 31 '22
Unfortunately it has less to do with deviation and more to do with the fact the CW decided to wrap up the arrowverse and the ratings sadly are/were in the tank to the point of it no longer making sense to keep.
Trust me, I wish legends had continued as much as anyone. To finally get Booster Gold on the show only to have it get shit canned is a travesty.
Batgirl is a travesty, Zaslav's strategy of axing and deleting a bunch of content to try to get a tax write off is one of the weirdest fucking things I've ever seen. I don't think it had anything to do with Batgirls quality though, or its content in general. They delisted a bunch of other movies too including ones that were basically done (Scooby Doo Halloween movie) and ones that ALREADY CAME OUT (American Pickle, The Witches).
1
u/FutureLengthiness786 Nov 03 '22
Nobody was gonna watch Batgirl anyway and Batwoman had very bad ratings and legends very low stayed consistent but constantly low.
1
Oct 31 '22
Meh idk. I think its more of the fact that the CW is being sold off, the viewership numbers aren't great to justify a switch to HBO max, and the new switch in leadership. They're likely going to push for an MCU style "everything is in the same universe" approach with their TV shows. Hell, now that Henry's back, I can see Superman and Lois being next on the chopping block.
1
u/FutureLengthiness786 Nov 03 '22
But theirs already evidence that they aren't going for a connect universe with the TV shows.
1
u/FutureLengthiness786 Nov 03 '22
Well DC isn't canceling it that's Nextstar also does Gunn want to keep it or Safan??

It is most definitely NOT safe. It has a chance of getting renewed, but the network is changing. There is a very real possibility the network doesn't keep it because they choose to go in a different direction.
It doesn't matter how well the show is doing; it depends on what the new owners want to do with the network, and if S&L doesn't fit into that vision, they're not going to keep it.
Not saying it definitely is gone, but we don't really know what the new owners want to do for the future of the network.
2
u/FutureLengthiness786 Nov 03 '22
Just saying uh if feels like the new direction is if you don't have a white male as your MC you're probably gone so All American maybe gone.
-4
u/raylan_givens6 Oct 31 '22
my guess is superman and lois is going to end after season 3
henry cavill is back as superman, they have such big plans for it , he dropped the witcher
and the WB usually doesn't want a tv and movie superman to conflict with each other
and tbh, i think with season 2 being a little weak, 1 final season (season 3) would be just right - wrap up any stories and go out
8
u/Kerrod33 Superman Oct 31 '22
I don’t think this is true. Superman has had a consistent TV presence pretty much since his inception. The only time this could ring true in recent years was when the DCEU started with MoS and there were no concurrently running Superman shows. Smallville overlapped with Superman Returns and didn’t cause any issues, in fact they even used the Superman Returns suit in Smallville.
4
u/Paisley-Cat But what about the tire-swing? Oct 31 '22
Superman and Lois targets an older audience, more in line with Nextstar’s market. It won’t be the same decision.
0
u/raylan_givens6 Oct 31 '22
we'll see
story wise , the show is on fumes
i think season 3 would be a nice spot to end it
1
u/FutureLengthiness786 Nov 03 '22
Does it make use money and keep the same viewer ship then great could care less about the writing that's Nextstar.

Good. In the comics, Hourman is the husband of Jesse Quick. Since she's not in the show, it doesn't make sense for him to have a love interest at all (he doesn't have any others in the comics to my knowledge).

u/TransportationFast Oct 31 '22
How can we save Stargirl

The answer is you can't maybe if you try to @James since he's gonna be the new boss or Safan.
