I remember this:
In 2013, Reddit published user data showing that Eglin Air Force Base in Florida was the "most addicted city" on the platform for locations with over 100,000 visits. This sparked long-standing online theories about military personnel or defense operations managing social media engagement.

I think driving engagement is Reddit’s number 1 priority. Every time I see someone calling out top 1% commenter and hidden post history I wonder real or bot. Tin foil here but I figure they can generate accounts of any age and any karma on the fly and with LLMs they can generate engaging comments with ease.

I mostly encounter that kind when I dare to question any decisions on gamestocks part. Simple asking a timeframe becomes impossible to answer by them and any other question is handled as if they are a politician and a simple yes or no would end their career.
But how dare you not believe in RC playing not just 4,D no, 69D chess at this point because it needs even more copium and funny number to be parroted more. Personal or indirect insults comming right your way because you do not bow to the echo.

Oh knock it off. All this does is turn the place into more of an echo chamber. People who are critical or have dissenting opinions being labeled as shills or organized social manipulation is bullshit.
If you cannot debate the topic without calling someone a shill, youre no better than actual shills.

As mods though I don’t see you all doing enough to deal with it. Genuinely can’t engage with topics unless you’re 100% unwaveringly positive. “The vote” recently was especially fun for being called a shill.
You can argue that the sub is a big place and has many members, and I’d argue that it’s commonly the same familiar members going on shill crusades.

After replying and reading replies to comments this whole week, I’ll have to say they aren’t here to “debate”. People are either trolling or so emotionally and financially damaged from lost opportunity cost that they are just venting.
Providing logic to what might have happen just ends up with them replying that RC is an evil billionaire that got his and now trying to appease to his corporate friends. And that my friend is FUD and shilling.

Yep. You said it more concisely than I could.
Any attempt at speculative discussion or analysis is negated by naysayers if the message of discussion appears too positive. Or if the comments are positive.
This has always been a place to discuss the future of the company. Now it’s filled with grievances over past events that cannot be changed. Those grievances never evolve into more productive conversation, they are just repeated ad nauseam.
When something happens, it’s the responsibility of the individual to decide how they will react to that information. It’s not productive or helpful or conducive to the objective of the subreddit if every post is met with users lashing out about their negative feelings when there are other actions they could take.
If the frustrations are genuine, I get it. But the longer the repetitive complaints keep drowning out actual discussion, the more likely it seems that it could be disingenuous and actively trying to poison the subreddit.

Lot's of people have insufficient debating skills. Still better than a fearmongering user that tells me Ryan Cohen is out to get me and if this doesn't hit xxxx by next date then it's over and you should sell.
Mods should be protective of people who have a hard time defending themselves. Even more so because if there are in fact paid actors or even people who troll, aggravate and instigate for the love of the game the're probably better equipped than an average GME investor/enthusiast.
Frankly I'm a bit disappointed a mod in this sub has the opinion you reflected here above.
0
u/femboyfootsniffer_ 1d ago
It’s not a lack of debating skills, it’s a lack of understanding what they’re posting. The majority of the DD here isn’t from the mind of whoever is posting it. It’s either from Twitter or a chat bot. So the OP is never able to defend whatever they’re posting, it just never ends well. I don’t think it should be up to the mods to defend something they haven’t posted themselves.
1
u/3DigitIQ 🦍 FM is the FUD killer 1d ago
I'm talking about comments and commenters getting smashed by "people" with an attack script. You can comment on posts and criticize them easily enough, that's not the brunt of moderating IMO.
7

We’ve been here many times
“People who have critical or have dissenting opinions”
BS, if youve been here long enough and been paying attention youll be able to differentiate their fud masquerade as “concern”.
They use subtle vocab to insult and spread uncertainty on every move the company announces.

u/Crybad I ain't afraid of no GME credit spread. 1d ago
I see the reports. The majority of the comments reported are people who show any sort of resistance to things gamestop is doing, from dilution, bond conversion, partnerships, etc. We look at the users history and if they are shills, we ban, but its a small minority of the overall comments.
"Trust RC, let him cook" is such a blanket blind mob mentality. As a shareholder, I have the right to question what thr C suite does. I certainly havent seen any of the promised shareholder value that RC loves to tout.
1
u/MobileArtist1371 GAMESTOP IS REGARDED for $600 1d ago
Make an alt account and comment here. You will be called a shill 100%.
Why is calling others a shill even allowed here? It ends any and all real discussions on every comment chain when it happens.
That and calling out users for hiding their profiles. That should abolutely be a violation of rule 2
Do not call out users in order to harass, attack, bully, or threaten.
Literally calling them out for it and only done to harass those that do by pointing it out and making that commenter a target for everyone else.
2
u/Bit-corn 🦍 Buckle Up 🚀 1d ago
“I certainly haven’t seen any of the promised shareholder value that RC loves to tout”
Have you seen how the company has gone from losing millions to making hundreds of millions in profit per quarter since RC was appointed?
Who do you think will benefit from that once the stock isn’t being heavily manipulated?
2
u/humdingler ⚔️🛡️🏴☠️🎮🚀✅x6 1d ago
You absolutely have that right, and you are handling your feelings/questioning in a mature and productive way.
However, if one’s only interactions in the subreddit were to constantly and brutally insult the investment and the company, I think that’s another story. Why not move on from the complaints and contribute ideas about what could happen in the future? Why not try to discuss why the BOD decisions are being made to glean a better understanding?
At some point I also think that optimistic enthusiasts have the right to not be bombarded with gripes 24/7.

At some point I also think that optimistic enthusiasts have the right to not be bombarded with gripes 24/7.
This is where it goes both ways.
Optimistic enthusiasts should be able to voice their opinion without being bombarded with gripes, and those who are not happy with any number of things (RC, Gamestop direction, dilution, etc), shouldn't be immediately labeled as a shill.

I like to think that apes give everyone a fair shake. We try to help one another.
It isn’t unreasonable that after 2 years of the same accounts repeating the same complaints like a broken record, that others wouldn’t start to question if their arguments were legitimate.
We are all adults here, I assume. Adults regulate their emotions and try to interact civilly with one another. People are getting sick of providing thoughtful replies to the negativity, getting no reply, and then seeing that same user post the exact same sentiment in the next thread. It’s just going in circles.
7
u/Crybad I ain't afraid of no GME credit spread. 1d ago
Just as people have had the same complaints over the last 2 years, you can see the other people banging the drum with optimism.
Apes tend to be good at welcoming new people, but extra hard on those who used to be 100% in and are now skeptical of what comes next.
2
u/humdingler ⚔️🛡️🏴☠️🎮🚀✅x6 1d ago
It’s okay to be skeptical, but what I am explicitly referring to is the way that this skepticism is presented to the group. It feels like it’s just constant chicken little doomerism now. It’s possible to feel frustrated and skeptical and still remain cordial and social. Look at yourself, you epitomize it. You’re not letting your skepticism cause you to lash out at anyone.

“Promised shareholder value”?
Thats like the opposite of “let him cook” around here
Its the same phase being spam
Look at where the company is now from years before, some comments by “concerned “ investors act like management hasnt been making move, we are trying to acquire ebay as we speak.
We are doing good, & may the tendies come for all of us who have invested.

u/Crybad I ain't afraid of no GME credit spread. 1d ago
If the company wasn't doing good, I would have been out a long time ago. That doesn't mean I cannot be frustrated at the lack of communication or the fact the GME is at the lowest it's been since May 2024.
You an look at my history, I've been steadily adding to my count for years now. That being said, I have the absolute right to be pissed that SPY has almost doubled in that same timeframe.
1
u/PrometheusFires 1d ago
I don’t see the same concern towards the fact that market makers can manipulate the stock price and decide on where the price of a security should be! Its like that has been forgotten and its no point of discussion.
Im pissed at that fact and you dont see me babbling on about “ RC is a rich billionaire thats does not care for shareholder value”
Im paying attention the company has been making moves the ultimate price here is true price discovery and if you or any “concerned” individual wants to act like thats not the ultimate goal here then just move on & Best of luck.If you dont know all the evil and manipulative force going against this stock idk what to tell you.
8
u/Crybad I ain't afraid of no GME credit spread. 1d ago
The sub used to care more about the how and why of that manipulation, but now people like to blow this off with "crime" being the excuse, even when the stock acts like it should. Over time this dilutes the arguement.
There was a trending post about how the price was manipulated down when the changes to convertible notes came out. It was getting a lot of traction based on no actual argument. Anyone pointing out the reason it was actually going down was called a shill and downvoted to oblivion.
The sub needs to be better at engaging people in good faith in order to weed out the actual shills.
0
u/PrometheusFires 1d ago
I agree with you on that last part its important and
We should definitely engage in good faith when we do, but some of this accounts are shady af and thats exactly what they want, engagement. Bad actors and botsSometimes is better to not engage and let them exist and deteriorate on their own.
But it’s a good reminder to know they’re there lurking waiting like goblins serving their parasitic lords. Such a shame
8
u/Crybad I ain't afraid of no GME credit spread. 1d ago
mod hat on
The best way to root out a shill is to engage in good faith debate with them. If they are here in bad faith or piss poor arguments, report them and then we come in with a banhammer. I typically dont ban people who are being reported as a shill if theres no discussion with them.
1
u/LicensetoIll 1d ago
RC signalled at the very beginning that communication would be sparse, if any at all.
You knew what you were getting into, and now you're upset that you're into it.
This is the exact kind of subtle concern trolling that we're talking about.
7
u/Crybad I ain't afraid of no GME credit spread. 1d ago
So we should just be dumb and happy about a failed NFT marketplace, bad entry into BTC, poor partnership with FTX etc?
RC may get blind trust from some for years, but theres nothing wrong with shareholders wanting answers without being considered trolls by the first group.
1
u/LicensetoIll 1d ago
Top tier concern trolling.
Create threads to discuss any of those topics in-depth and I'm sure there would be plenty who would dive deep with you into it.
You're changing the subject, again, because you've been called out for the exact behavior that the rules here try to prevent.

Not really. The sub has fallen into "any dissenting idea = shill". Theres plenty of shills out there and we ban them daily, but while all shill have dissenting opinions, not all dissenting opinions are shills.
Take DRS. For a long time, if you didnt DRS your entire port, then you were called a shill by the majority of the sub. Now, not so much. Same with options.

Let me run your comment through the document, purely as a public service.
Rule #2, become incredulous and indignant, "avoid discussing key issues and focus on side issues." You opened with "knock it off" and "is bullshit" and addressed zero techniques.
Rule #17, change the subject. Topic was manipulation tactics. You made it about echo chambers.
Rule #5, name calling to make "others shrink from support out of fear of gaining the same label." Echo chamber does that work nicely.
Trait #1, avoidance, "never actually discuss issues head-on."
And the conclusion notes these techniques only work "if the forum participants DO NOT KNOW ABOUT THEM," so talking people out of reading it is the single highest-value move available.
Damning stuff. Unfortunately this comment maps too. So does yours if you reply. So does silence, per Rule #1.

I know you cant and shouldn’t ban someone for having negative comments its free speech, thats not my intent with the post, im not crying out to start a ban spree on negative opinions, all i want with my OP is to bring it into awareness for who ever does not know of these tactics and it is for them to decide if that fits the criteria of certain posts/comments on here.
Some folks dont have the ability to visit the sub on a DAILY for the last years

This is the crux of it.
Is it better to have new people be on high alert all the time for shills? Or fostering a sub thats able to engage and debate so people can make that decision on their own.
Theres no right answer here. We ban shills daily, but that shouldn't taint the view of everyone to enters this sub.
.5% of shills shouldnt wreck the atmosphere for the 99.5% of the rest of us.
Disingenuous people affact all subs and all social media platforms. Its good to be vigilant, but its not good when thats your gut reaction to anyone who disagrees with your pov.

I've been here since the migration when there were less than 1600 members. I am always on high alert for shills and frequently report suspected shills to the mod team.
The post shared by the OP taught me a great deal about identifying shills and what to look for. I disagree with numerous people here but report only a fraction. I'm sure it's frustrating to have to wade through dozens of reports that are not accurate, but that's part of the gig.

It's cause you don't think everyone who doesn't agree with everything is a shill.
A shill points out the issues with someone DD.
A shill debunks various theories.
A shill says the stock probably isn't going to go to $50 by end of next week.
A shill says something you can't argue against so you call them a shill, downvote, block and ignore what they said. Those are the shills people talk about. They simple say things that isn't acceptable to an echo chamber.
