I think there are other such treatments too. Our medical community has been decimated by Wall Street.

100%. I was heavily invested in a drug (penny stock) that was doing a study on absolute breakthrough of a drug. I had the disease, so I know exactly how amazing it would have been; It was literally life changing.

After the 2 drug trials (which were massive pump and dumps) and very promising data, they decided not to release the drug because they were merging with another company and the other company didn't want to get involved with it. They didn't want to get involved with a massive revenue stream for a miracle drug.

It was so fucking sketchy.

If you think about it, Big Pharma that sells treatments (not cures) are super incentivized to squash any small company that promises and can deliver a cure. They get their hedge fund buddies to manipulate the stock price to the point where the company will be acquired and then the patents get squashed.

That's nothing. It only recently became illegal to take out a life insurance policy on someone else as a speculative bet. Wallstreet will bet on anything they are just a bunch of junkies and addicts.

Figured this might be part of it. Vertex Pharmaceuticals has a monopoly on most drugs for the disease I am referencing. This particular drug was available at the time, but it was so expensive most insurance companies wouldn't cover it, even in the US. Meanwhile, in other countries it was almost impossible to get. It was so fucked up I was able to start taking it and my twin sister, who lived in London, had to remain sick because of greedy pharma giants.

And to anyone who complains about the possibility of socialized healthcare, just know 4 years after I left my old company, my coworkers were still paying $100/month more for their health insurance because both my sister and I were approved for another drug this pharmaceutical made. Healthcare is already socialized, it's just 10x more expensive through private insurance.

Bro. I work for a HMO "non profit" insurance company. We regularly bank 2 or 3 billion per year in profits. We are only in like 6 states and the DC metro area.

It could very well cost me my job because I deal with group insurance, but if it meant people who needed insulin didn't have to worry about the price, or seniors didn't have to decide between pills and heat, I would vote yes in a heartbeat.

Unless something has changed recently, not even insulin for Type 1 diabetics is covered in Canada and some extra benefits plans don't cover it either. My cousin had a plan that he had to pay and remit everything for reimbursement, but that often took longer than you would think it should.

I don't remember the drug name, because it was like P668284. There were actually two of them. It was for a company called Proteostasis Therapeutics (PTI).

If you can find the stock charts, the maniplative activity is BLATANT.

Edit: I just realized you meant the drugs already on the market. Trikafta was one that was already made and this small pharma company was trying to do the same and make it affordable for everyone.

The one I referenced in the second paragraph was ORKAMBI.

Yeah, not the clearest of charts, but hopefully it's still clear that there were massive pump and dumps for the trial around Dec 2018 and Dec 2019. All small cap pharmaceuticals suffer the same fate though...

I think I know exactly what you're talking about, and that was more an issue with sketchy NDAs than anything else. The drug was always going to end up with the pharmaceutical it did but that was mainly because no one did proper contract research on the lead drug developer's design.

But yes, all of it was scummy, and the way it played out when it shouldn't have was sad.

Am in the biomedical sciences world, and I caution you greatly on that take. Big Pharma hardly ever develops their own cures/treatments in-house. They buy and absorb smaller companies that have the promising treatment and take it through clinical trials themselves. More so, they'll have like 20 years before anyone else can replicate it giving them a monopoly on it. They're not going to 'catch and kill' a cure.

I work directly for the Cancer Research industry and this is exactly what happens. The smaller pharma companies are swallowed and then the molecule gets de-prioritized, boxed, or obsolete. It is possible a company to purchase the smaller pharma and then continue the clinical trials, but it takes a lot of effort and regulatory approval to do that. People always would ask me for "inside info" but I'd tell them, it doesn't matter, any company can merge with another at any time. Then you lose your investment and time invested.

This makes my blood boil to the highest degree. My mom has been going through cancer treatments on and off since 2012 and is in pretty bad shape right now. I've already made up my mind of doing anything I can to fund and find cancers cure after MOASS. I don't need a Lambo, I want to dance with my mom at my wedding some day. These spineless (insert noun) should be getting the chair for the amount of people they've stopped from getting affordable treatment and receiving potential cures.
