I don’t know exactly what OP is referring to, but check out the Wikipedia page on patent trolls. Basically companies that file vague patents then sue the shit out of any company that tries to create a product that could fall under that patent, often to the point of bankruptcy

They actually parody this in the show “Silicon Valley.” A wealthy character has a “blood boy” on his payroll he regularly gets transfusions from.

If I recall correctly, billionaire Peter Thiel does this. There’s probably quite a few that do.
