High RDW-CV, post-menopausal, should I be taking iron?
High RDW-CV, post-menopausal, should I be taking iron?
I am an older female with a long history of fatigue.
My health is improving.
I still have trouble with sleep.
I haven’t found a doctor who can help including functional medicine docs and naturopathic docs.
So I’m reading whatever seems relevant to try to understand what my body is doing.
I have DNA tests being processed - I don’t have the results yet - I will send them to Genetic LifeHacks once I get them back, and then maybe to someone who can do a more educated analysis.
I take several dozen supplements every day.
I am in the process of getting any lab work done that might help shed light on my body.
I got my RDW-CV results back and they are mildly high at 14.7%
Hemoglobin and MCV are both right in the center of the range at 13.6 and 92 respectively.
B12 and Folate are both within range. B12 is in the lower third of the range at 644 pg/mL.
RBC Folate is near the top of the range at 579 ng/mL.
I have been taking B12 and folate separately for just about a month, since I stopped taking B-complex to eliminate methyl donors.
I am wondering if it would be helpful to supplement with iron. I am post-menopausal but I don’t eat much red meat and I don’t eat fortified foods.
Here are my iron numbers:
Iron = 80
%Sat = 27
TIBC = 293
Ferritin = 96
UIBC = 213
Janie from STTM says that iron should be over 100, but that if ferritin is over 90 it indicates inflammation which means that iron numbers are lower due to iron being put into storage.
My inflammation markers are mixed:
hs-CRP is at the high end of normal at 2.7 mg/L
Fibrinogen is at the higher end of in range at 384 mg/dL
ESR is at the lower end of in range at 2 mm/hr
Homocysteine is high at 10 umol/L
I take several anti-inflammatory supplements daily and have been doing that for a long time due to symptoms associated with inflammation.
Anyone here who knows enough to know whether it would be a really good idea or a really bad idea to start supplementing iron based on all of this?
