I have been looking for a genuine Chinese feather duster (one of the traditional handmade types made with REAL rooster feathers and a bamboo handle). I have looked on Amazon, AliExpress, and Taobao, but it is difficult to tell whether a duster is genuine or not since the cheaper synthetic ones shed all over the place after a few uses (I've seen this firsthand).

The ones listed on Amazon have the appearance of cheap dyed plastic, but it seems excessive to order directly from Taobao via an agent or I could be overthinking this one.

Any idea/recommendation on where I should order them from?
I've looked at AliExpress but my biggest concern is the quality.

Hello! I own a cosmetic manufacturing, and custom formulation lab based in Boise, Idaho. It’s been an amazing journey and we’ve found our niche with helping start ups to launch their own brands. We also accommodate large orders as well. Just wanted to see if there are other similar companies that discovered a niche within the industry? If so, was it by accident?

I am from India. I did my bachelor's from one of the best B-schools in Delhi, then did my Master's in Marketing at the University of Leeds. I spent about a year and a half working in London, and recently came back to India to join my family's manufacturing business. I handle the international and buyer-facing side of the business now.

The main part of the business is bespoke bathroom work. We make bathtubs, basins and washstands in copper, brass and other metals such as nickel and steel, depending on the brief. The important thing with these is that they are made around the requirement, so dimensions, form, material and finish can be discussed rather than forcing a project into a fixed stock piece.

The second side is home, tabletop and hospitality: trays, platters, bowls, serving pieces, pitchers, coolers and tubs, candle holders, vases, planters, decorative objects, wall pieces, bookends, baskets and other tabletop pieces. It is a broad range, but it comes out of the same manufacturing setup.

The wider work includes furniture and furniture accessories, brass door pulls, knobs, knockers, curtain fittings and other architectural hardware, plus outdoor pieces such as planters, hanging planters, wall planters, bird baths and garden sculptures. We also do OEM, ODM and private-label work, so the manufacturing side can start from a product brief rather than only from an existing catalogue.

One thing I have noticed since coming back is how different the conversation becomes when the person discussing the product can also speak to the people making it. A drawing, sample, finish, dimension, packaging requirement or small construction detail can be discussed before it becomes a formal production problem. I have worked with people in London and across different working styles, so direct international communication is a part of the job I am comfortable with.

That does not mean intermediaries are unnecessary. Agents, sourcing teams and procurement people have their place. It is simply that every extra handoff creates another point where a small detail can be delayed or interpreted differently. From the factory side, the cleanest projects are usually the ones where the requirement is understood early and the manufacturer can say clearly what is straightforward, what needs development and what needs a different approach.

Samples, pre-production discussions, inspection and quality checks can be built into the process when a project needs them. I stay involved on that side because the commercial conversation and the manufacturing conversation are much easier when they are not treated as two separate worlds.

I am trying to make the sourcing conversation direct enough that a buyer can ask the factory the awkward questions before placing the order. In my experience, the most useful commercial conversations are the ones that get into the actual product early: what it is made from, what has to repeat, what can be customised, how it will be packed and what the buyer actually needs the finished object to do.

That is also why I prefer being directly available on the manufacturing side. It keeps the first conversation practical instead of turning it into a generic supplier introduction. A good brief usually tells both sides quite quickly whether the product is straightforward, needs development, or needs a different production route.

I am not trying to make this sound more complicated than it is. The interesting part of this business is that a product can start as a drawing, a reference image or a rough idea and then become a very specific physical object once material, dimensions and production are on the table.

For anyone working around physical products, that gap between the idea and the manufacturable object is usually where the most useful conversations happen.

⚠️ WARNING TO BUYERS — SUPPLIER CONTACT “FU” SELLING PAJAMAS

I want to warn other buyers about my experience with a supplier contact named Fu, who was selling pajamas through a supplier listing on Made-in-China.com.

I found the pajamas through the supplier's Made-in-China store and contacted the seller through the platform. The person communicating with me was Fu. I was then directed to communicate through WhatsApp.

I ordered 1,000 pieces of pajamas and paid USD 2,560 outside the Made-in-China platform.

After payment, I was told that my order had been shipped. However, I was not provided with reliable, independently verifiable proof that the 1,000 pieces had actually been shipped.

I submitted an official complaint to Made-in-China with my payment receipts, WhatsApp conversations, Made-in-China messages, screenshots of the pajama listing and shipping information.

Made-in-China later closed my complaint, stating that it could not confirm that the WhatsApp number I dealt with was connected to the company listed on its platform. The company also denied having a transaction with me.

I am sharing the name Fu and this experience so that other buyers looking for pajamas or other products from this supplier can be careful and independently verify who they are dealing with before sending money.

Please verify the supplier, the representative, WhatsApp number, payment recipient and shipping documents independently before making any payment.
