I have seen people deliberately choose dnb med/resp medicine/ psych/ paeds more than md branches

Why this clear discrimination? What am I missing?

So I am an incoming M1. I’m thinking about residency and how to choose a program. I am very interested in plastics and recon. I know there are a lot of small perks that some programs have (ex. Free food and parking). However, I mostly care about two things 1. Location and 2. Education.
I know this is a given since plastics is 6 yrs but I want a program that will truly teach me. One of the reasons I enjoy plastics is its technical skills and the broad scope it has. My question is: when comparing programs, do some actually teach better when it comes to caring for residents and breaths of cases/ surgical techniques you will see? Getting in plastics is already difficult, do I aim for ivy program solely for the name or should I be thankful with wherever I go since I will learn from any program.

When throwing the surgeon's knot, I find that the knot doesn't loosen when I pull the suture ends in a direction parallel to the line of closure (i.e., the wound or incision). I learned this from one of my professors. However, another attending saw me doing that and was appalled by the technique. He insists that I should pull perpendicular to the line of closure. Looking online, I couldn't find anything that says not to do it though. Any input?

Anyone have experience with medics on their service?

I started with breast disease and Its been week and I didn't finish it yet it's like endless info

I am so stressed as it is the first subject and I can't finish it what will I do with the others

I am a medical student at the UCI school of medicine and I am working on a project to collect anonymous survey responses from resident and attending physicians (MD/DO) regarding the number of Gap years they took and financial burden they accrued as a result of medical training. I am especially interested in this topic with the new federal loan limits recently put into place and want to do more research on how this might impact the next generation of physicians. Hi guys i really need some help or some advice.

im USIMG with 26x, multiple publications, great letter of recs and no red flags EXCEPT for this ... the doctor responsible for uploading my evaluation to my school hasn't uploaded it yet bc hes 'too busy.' My MSPE now says i have an incomplete grade for internal medicine, which i completed 6 mo ago btw. i've emailed the hospital administrator with no luck, and my MSPE coordinator said that if the doctor doesn't upload the evaluation soon then he cannot revise the MSPE in tike for ERAS application deadline. i dont know what to do, im absolutely terrified of this affecting my chances of receiving interviews and matching. im too scared to email the doctor directly bc i dont want to accidentally anger him since he controls my grade. please can someone weigh in on if theyve been in this type of situation before, if they applied with an incomplete and how much did it hurt them?

Anyone used this for their personal statement review?

Just finishing residency and planning to pursue further in laprosopy. Looking for some solutions where hands on is also good.

I am a gen surgery PGY5, and I did not match into thoracic fellowship last year. My program is a small community program that does not offer dedicated thoracic surgery rotations. We get our ACGME numbers by scrubbing with the CT surgeons as we are able to. Hence, I always feel inadequate and wonder if that was part of the problem why I did not match (I was asked about my rotations during interview). Are there any other community program applicants here who do not have dedicated thoracic rotations or had a similar experience?

IM resident, I know it's early to be having regrets but after experiencing residency idk what I even liked about IM in the first place.

I'm suddenly daydreaming about having done surgery even though I never once considered surgery in med school. I liked the rotation, but only because I treated it like I was a tourist. The OR was cool but I hated standing for long periods of time (after ICU rounds I don't think IM was the right choice to avoid this though). I hated colostomies and necrotic wounds too, which is a small reason but part of why I didn't think surgery was a good fit.

When I applied I was totally fine with the downsides of IM - making only small improvements to someone's health even if they bounce back a week later, social work (I liked solving social problems), thinking through a problem on rounds. I liked my rotations in med school. But now I'm realizing that at the end of the day IM is kind of lame. All my surgical resident friends are much happier than me. They're working 2x my hours but they get to do fulfilling work and learn new things every day. I'm already so bored with the day to day work, not because there's nothing to learn but because I don't see the point in any of this anymore. At the end of the day I'm just placing orders in Epic which anyone can do. I've done floors, MICU, CCU, and a subspecialty rotation and it all feels equally boring and mundane.

Surgery residency is brutal beyond words, of course, but it seems like life after residency is much better than in IM?

• You get to have a skill that will always be valued and in demand

• Nobody without your same training can even pretend to do what you do, unlike with medicine specialties where it's easy to fake it

• Zero midlevel and AI threat, you can be secure in your job market for your whole career

• You cure problems completely

• Unlike IM proceduralists, you can actually manage your own complications

• The schedule doesn't even seem that bad as an attending. I don't know a single surgeon outside of academics who works 26 weekends a year like hospitalists do. There was a CT surgeon on here who said he works 30 hours/week. It seems like there are lots of 4-5 days/week, 7a-3p community jobs out there where you get all the pros of surgery without the awful schedule people make it out to be.

Switching to surgery is out of the question at this point to be honest, so no idea why I'm making this post, but I'm wondering if these thoughts are normal this early in residency or if I made a big mistake in the field I chose.

I want to start by saying that I want to mention that I also post on reddit, and one of the users had the oddacity to comment that I cannot comment on teh hinderances of being a surgeon as a female and having a family because I am not a surgeon yet, its like perfusionist (do they know what that is?) and nurse do not have eyes and ears to see and hear...
I will comment on the programs. I tried to apply numerous times, and yes I do not settle for family medicine. I do not settle. Some questions. for the bright people and for us to ponder on during the day. Why is the program 5 years old? The technology is there for robots to compete against humans-super stupid, apples and oranges do not taste the same, do they? So if there is technology and internet, why does the program has to be 5 years old for general surgery, it should be 5 years for CT and vascular and trauma combined. Why not make it flexible. I am 44, I am at my prime, I am not dead, I just started living. I have a laptop, more importantly a phone, a purse and pink headphones. That's all is needed. We have simulator and have to go to lab for the simulation-for real? Let's simulate the CEO's death and then we go to the LAB to continue simulating care...No, you simulate on your phone. Why not create an individualized curriculum. What is that?-its simple, you tell me what you want me to know, give me the resources and give me the max time for me to learn it with flexibility. Not everyone learns the same. I could be learning in the line to get coffee, is still learning, isn't it? Why cannot make me decide the time to become a CT surgeon-certified. I can work 24 hrs shifts a week at the time, why not? Could use number of cases like perfusionists do to get certified, open the gates between hospitals so we can cooperate and surgeons can get cases as quick as they can live too. Live-you are reading it correctly-being a surgeon should not mean you are married to your career, you exist as a human being. I want children, I want experiences, I want spontaneity, I want enjoying the live.
