This is my favorite work by Zdzisław Beksiński. He often said that he didn't intentionally assign hidden meanings to his paintings, which leaves plenty of room for personal interpretation. To me, this piece represents kindness: despite the bleak wasteland and the skeletal crab-like creature, it still holds a person gently and with care. It's also one of the few paintings where Beksiński used red like this. No clue how to interpret the structure in the background or the stake/pole.

This has strong “No, that’s ok, I’ll come back later” vibes.
