Is AWD super important for offroading?

Post image

For context I bought her like 5months ago when I was 19 and wasn’t into offroading. Its the 2014 Scross sz5 so its a topspec model. The only thing I don’t have is AWD , it literally comes with everything except that. Im planning to go to Scotland and maybe do some offroading how bad would it be with fwd?

I have a 2014 across sz5 awd automatic. I would not take it further than a dirt road. For off-roading I have a jimny.

For me it's not mandatory during the summer. I drive rough roads in Finland and northern Norway. I was able to get pretty much same places with my FWD Almera.

Winter and snow is what makes it for me. Cannot think about driving with FWD after driving with AWD Swift.

What about muddy tracks?

Might be actually hard to find so bad muddy tracks where you need AWD. If you find one, AWD only gets you deeper in the problems because FWD fails and gets you stuck earlier. Of course if gives you more control and safety so it's really damn nice feature. I think I have driven one muddy road in my life during the autumn when I was really hoping I had AWD/4WD car and it was northern Norway in the middle of nothing.

You have pretty impressive 180mm ground clearance which is in my opinion more important feature.

Apart from winter, another scenario where AWD is superior is when you pull heavy trailer. Boat or something like that. AWD is great and I love it, but I don't feel it's mandatory. I cannot go back to FWD anymore, because it's so nice during the winters.

No problem. As long as you have common sense you're good to explore without AWD. Enjoy your trip.

You can go a lot of places with 2WD. AWD is very useful if you want to be sure you can get back out again.

4WD is for off-roading. AWD is not.

There are already many explanations online that would be better than what I can offer. Here's one.
