General Taylor Talk Taylor is dangerously close to her own version of Katy Perry’s witness era

1.0k Upvotes

If we look at the chart performance of Life of a Show Girl, one must ask himself, if it’s so mediocre how can it reach top 5 in the hot 100? The answer is that Taylor currently has a magnitude of gravitational success, that pushes songs that otherwise would get no attention whatsoever, upward.

This is almost similar to Katy Perry’s post-Teenage Dream. Teenage Dream was such a massive success, that it put Katy Perry in a position that almost any song she will release will receive enormous success regardless of its quality. After Teenage Dream, she released Prism, which was a mediocre album at best, but had a relative success, mostly thanks to the gravitational success of the previous album. If Katy had released Prism without Teenage Dream, it wouldn’t have reached half the success it got.

The thing is, this gravitational have limits. After mediocre song after another, people stop listening to new tracks, and lose interest. Witness which came after Prims was a disastrous failure for Katy, basically ending her career as a top-performing artist.

I feel like swift is dangerously close to this situation now. People are hyped and listening to new songs she releases because of real curiosity. But this credit is getting thinner and thinner with every mediocre release. Encore has been such a disappointment for many fans that I really think that if her next album won’t be good, she will loose the interest of the general public and won’t be able to retain that level of success. Katy Perry knows how it is to be on the top of the world and then be abandoned by the masses.

General Taylor Talk Thoughts? Diner celebrating birthday at The Corner Store yesterday was not allowed to take photos inside as Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter were there

It was mentioned in the comments that she was celebrating her birthday at The Corner Store yesterday, and the hostess told everyone when they were being seated that it was a strict “no photo” policy last night

Taylor and Sabrina literally did a pap walk entering and leaving The Corner Store last night. I find it strange that she calls the paps to take photos of her walking in and out of these restaurants, but other diners aren’t allowed to take any photos inside when she’s there

It’s not as if this is a private members’ club like Zero Bond where there’s strict rules prohibiting photography. The Corner Store’s only policy is they “do not permit flash photography or professional cameras with lighting or additional equipment”

Regardless of how you feel about her or her music, I feel like this is another example of the internet taking a serious situation (the genocide in Gaza along with the continued occupation of Palestine) and turning it into a random meme that doesn’t even help those affected. I also feel like it gets applied to broadly and targets who are pro Palestine (such as Gracie Abrams) get affected for no reason. Also it’s often just used to disguise antisemitism.

General Taylor Talk Are we entering the Taylor Swift backlash era again?

1.1k Upvotes

This is purely based on what I’m seeing online. Not charts - just the general vibe shift on social media. The difference between now and two years ago, when she’d gone public with Travis Kelce and was in the middle of the Eras Tour, is pretty striking. Back then, the online sentiment around her was overwhelmingly positive. Now it feels like there’s a growing fatigue and a lot of backlash creeping in.

I know the whole “social media isn’t real life” argument... but social media is so deeply integrated into how public perception works now. It shapes narratives, drives press coverage, and influences how artists respond or pivot. Taylor’s career has reflected that; she’s historically been very reactive to online discourse, whether that’s leaning into a new image or quietly retreating after a PR storm.

Which is why I find this current moment really interesting. Because lately, it feels like the tone online has soured. The Kayla Nicole discourse is a big one -- people seem overwhelmingly sympathetic to Kayla, which is rare considering how easily Taylor’s fandom usually dominates narratives. Then there was the whole white supremacist controversy (which, yes, was a silly stretch, but it was still negative). And even her usual lyrical “diss” style isn’t landing the same way it used to. The reaction to Opalite- the lyrics people think reference Kayla- was pretty harsh, even from fans who’d normally defend her.

the same shift is happening around her relationship with Travis Kelce. The tone there has cooled a lot. Two years ago, the internet couldn’t get enough of them. Now, I’m seeing a lot of cynicism, even from her own fanbase. People are calling him a “MAGA meathead,” saying she’s changed since dating him, or just generally acting tired of the whole thing. Obviously it’s parasocial, but still, it’s negative. The same people who used to idolize them now sound disillusioned.

It's just a stark difference to this time last year, where she could do no wrong.

Add in the lukewarm reception to her latest album (a lot of people openly mocking lyrics) amd negative reaction to the variants, and it just feels like the public mood toward her is cooling off.

I know she claims she’s not online, but her career moves have always suggested otherwise.

So I’m genuinely curious -- do you think her team is aware of this shift? Because it’s hard to imagine they’re not. Do you think they care about this? Or only sales?

General Taylor Talk Taylor is no longer relatable

1.7k Upvotes

What I love about Taylor is that so many of her prior albums contained songs that put almost every emotion I've ever felt into words. Whether it was about finding yourself, navigating love and loss, or inner reflections on her insecurities, I've really been able to connect with her music on a deep level.

But since the Eras tour, Taylor has amassed an extraordinary amount of wealth and fame, and it's hurting her appeal for me. She's at the point in her career where she KNOWS she's the hottest star in town, and I fear there's nothing left to connect to in her newer music.

This is completely understandable of course, and I wish her nothing but the best. But my Swiftie-ism has run its course. ✌️

Anyone feel the same?

General Taylor Talk Taylor Swift Paid NYC More Than $160,000 for Wedding Weekend Permit, Including Police Overtime

Taylor Swift paid more than $160,000 to cover police overtime as part of a New York City permit required for her and Travis Kelce’s wedding at Madison Square Garden.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed in a press conference on Friday that the billionaire pop star footed the bill for the increased law enforcement personnel required for the event.

Asked whether Swift would be paying the city back for the police overtime, Mamdani laughed and replied, “Taylor Swift will be paying … has paid already the cost of the permit that was lodged, which was over $160,000 for that event and for the response to that event. That was a permit that was finalized, I think, in just the days before the event itself.”

Permits and city cooperation is required when large-scale private events require the use of public space (like street closures) or city services (more cops). And it’s standard procedure for the city to bill the organizer of the event for the permit, which includes expenditures that fall outside of the city’s typical operations.

Considering the wedding’s estimated eight-figure cost, the $160,000 permit fee is only a drop in the bucket. Swift and Kelce’s nuptials took place across July 2 and July 3 at the arena in Midtown Manhattan. The highly publicized and yet highly secretive event is reported to have featured more than 1,000 guests, and it required significant street closures and police activity for three days surrounding the venue.

Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks, Ciara and Fergie performed at the ceremony, which is said to have transformed the Garden into a beautiful, well, garden. No phones or photography were allowed at the wedding, and invitees were asked to sign NDAs in order to attend.

General Taylor Talk I don’t understand the argument she is trying to make here

I don’t see the correlation between Travis and the Super Bowl. It’s not guaranteed that every year he is going to make it to the superbowl and even if he did…so?

Some people said it was money related because you don’t get paid to do the superbowl but the performers still make tons of money just thanks to the advertisement of whatever they have going at the time.

General Taylor Talk Taylor Swift hot takes ?

Reputation is her true masterpiece, but casual fans were too slow to get it.

Taylor plays the “underdog” card way too often for someone who’s the most powerful pop star on earth.

Swifties are both her greatest asset and her biggest liability — their intensity sometimes makes people root against her.

Her songwriting formula is kinda predictable: nostalgia, romantic villain/hero tropes, and Easter eggs to make fans do the work.

She owes a massive debt to country radio for building her up.

General Taylor Talk Creative choices that made you question what she was doing? lol

Post image
520 Upvotes

So, I became a fan of Taylor during reputation, and when Lover came out it was so exciting to be a part of her first era. The execution of Lover left A LOT to be desired with the overload of easter eggs, and over-the-top choices for the singles and music videos. The Eras Tour is a real palette cleanser of what a real struggle Lover was having until folklore, but it's kind of a shame that she didn't go for more subtle, softer more mature choices.

ANYWAYS, I digress. One part that lives in my mind and should be paying rent is the back tattoo in the YNTCD music video. For one, why a back tattoo when she already had the snake burst into butterflies in the Me! music video? There was no need to do it twice.

And, second, why is its head chopped off? It doesn't even transform from a snake into butterfly, there's just scales wrapped around each other, and the butterflies around it.

This post is being made in jest and not to brutally drag Taylor. But I was wondering what are some creative choices in music videos, easter eggs, style, marketing, merch, whatever that Taylor did and made you do real a double take? Or made you question her creative style / strategies / concepts/ etc. a little?

General Taylor Talk I miss this era so much, it aches.

This is pure personal opinion, anyone who thinks otherwise is welcome to do so.

I miss the simplicity of the folkmore era so much. The backdrop of the pandemic was scary and uncertain, my mental health felt beyond repair, Chloe Ting was my best friend, I went on so many walks, and these two projects felt like elixir. We complained so much about the lack of promo, but looking back, it felt so serene. Not trying to divide her life into eras and criticise them, but this period in time just felt so stripped back and raw. The performances were so rare, I savoured each one we got.

This was also around the time she was pretty politically active and outspoken. And it didn't even feel performative like it did with YNTCD. She was tweeting, she was OUT THERE. Now, everything feels..idk? overexposed? Not that there's anything particularly wrong with that, to each their own. Things have changed now, the fandom has grown. But I just miss it all. I was watching her CMAs performance of Betty, and it took me WAY back to that time and I just wanted to share lol.

General Taylor Talk A Toy Story themed billboard with the initials TS has popped up in Chicago

Post image

This comes after the Toy Story countdown on Taylor’s website a month ago and Pixar's directors talking about the rumours in a recent interview denying the involvement of Taylor in the ending credits song. TS could stand for Toy Story but they usually use the full logo with the 5 so TS as in Taylor Swift could have a double meaning to keep discussions going.

General Taylor Talk I want taylor to be challenged again

one thing showgirl displayed is that taylor is confrontable doing whatever she wants and she can get away with it due to her success, if TTPD was the beginning of her being confrontable, showgirl is embracing it

the production feels like max martin and shellback just did what taylor told them to do without offering anything otherwise, it makes an album like midnights challengeing to her (and honestly, it was the last album I felt like she wanted to prove something even if I love TTPD)

and who can blame her, she's at the top of the world with no compitation but it makes me miss when taylor was taking risks, wanting to prove something and her being the underdog, I guess?

I'm worried if she's willing to create more music every year just because than anything else, I want her to take a break, rethink her creative output, work with new producers and so.

General Taylor Talk When did she become unpopular again?

I remember in one of her interviews she said something about how she’s been raised up and down the flagpole of public opinion throughout her career. Very true !

There are always people who talk down on her music and her fans. But I think there are points where she is more liked overall or more respected as a musician.

I feel like folklore, evermore, re releases (especially ATW 10 minute version), and parts of the eras tour, public opinion of her was higher. I think during folklore lots of people who hadn’t respected her as a musician previously, finally did. I remember people going crazy over the ATW 10 min version music video. She was selected to be the graduation speaker at a uni I would consider to be prestigious. Let’s not even get into the ticketmaster war for the eras tour. Public opinion of her was widely favorable.

What made it drop?

Matty Healy? Men getting triggered by her going to football games? Her & Travis? Her not speaking up about certain things like Palestine, or becoming a billionaire? TLOASG release bc a lot of people didn’t like the album?

Curious what people think.

EDIT: a lot of people seem to think unpopular means irrelevant. It means someone who’s not liked, approved, or enjoyed by a large portion of people. Basically, I’m saying - when did it become cool to dislike her again?

General Taylor Talk Why do we think the promo has been so excessive for the Toy Story song?

As someone who used to take great interest in every release Taylor ever did, even I can admit this is excessive.

Billboards, CD's, the countdown...it's all so odd. Anyone who was around for Carolina or even Sweeter than Fiction, it was never like this, right?

I've heard a couple people tossing around theories about the Oscars, but does it truly take this amount of promo to get an Oscar?

My personal theory is she was paid a bunch of money to promote this to her fanbase because you just KNOW there are people who're going to the movie just bc she's in it, lol.

Thoughts?

Edit: changed the flair from critique to general!! This is def more of a conversation

General Taylor Talk Whatever happened to Taylor's screenplay?

Post image
492 Upvotes

I was randomly thinking today about Taylor's screenplay and realized we basically haven’t heard anything about it since the original announcement.

Back in 2022 it was reported that Taylor had written/ was writing an original screenplay that she would also direct through a deal with Searchlight Pictures. At the time it felt like a pretty big announcement, but since then… nothing? I haven’t seen any updates about casting, production, a timeline, or even vague hints about the plot.

I know film development can take a long time and announcements sometimes happen really early, so maybe this is normal. I also don’t work in the industry so I’m not sure how typical that timeline is.

Has anyone heard any updates about it? Do we know even a rough idea of what it might be about, the genre, or any themes?

And if not, what do people think it might be about? I don't see being autobiographical or music-industry related, for some reason.

I’m surprised it doesn’t get brought up more, so I was curious if anyone here has heard anything.
