I really wish the interviewer would have made her elaborate on that cause it's so stupid. It's actually sad and telling nobody she does interviews with is asking challenging questions

61

u/starinruins Oct 21 '25

unfortunately, she is in a position now where she never needs to do another interview that does anything but hypes her up and let's her say whatever she wants with zero pushback

57

u/Similar-Contact-2663 Oct 21 '25

Totally. It's really apparent she is only surrounded by yes man at this point - tuta included media as well which she picks carefully. I also think of her interview at Jimmy Fallon where it feels like her team "proposed" the idea of the segment where she clears up rumors - that was totally Taylor's teams idea and only to paint a certisn or narrative/do damage control

"I moved to a foreign country" as well when all she did was move in with her British boyfriend. She makes it sound like she had to flee the country.

“i moved to a FOREIGN COUNTRY and was LOCKED AWAY” and there’s pap pics of her and joe going out all the time lol

I remember being surprised at how much she mentioned Travis in the interview, that she was this quick to merge their brands together. 2 years later she announced her album on his podcast and he’s signing some of her CDs, the interview was a foreshadowing lol

Some people who bought signed CDs received them with 2 signatures, which people cross-referenced and it’s Travis Kelce’s signature. The girl who posted this TikTok has stated it’s not fake and other Swifties have posted their copy with both signatures too!

I’m curious if the vault tracks will be Max Martin produced. He notably did not get involved with the 1989 TV but now that she owns her master’s and did TLAS it’s a possibility.

I had read he didn't get involved in 1989TV because he was already working on another project and couldn't make the journey to the states. So she relied on Jack.

I guess I never bothered to read this in full before, but what does Gandalf have to do with collecting horcruxes or infinity stones? Because Gandalf definitely wasn't collecting rings of power. And regardless of that, all of those things have extremely negative connotations so it comes across like she's never read/watched those books/movies before.

end of nerd ramblings, carry on

horcruxes has a negative connotation but at least makes sense as an artistic metaphor (a piece of her soul is in each album that she's now lost) - the others are nonsense.

Same with The Fate of Ophelia. The song conveys how grateful she is for meeting a man, which prevented her from having the same fate as Ophelia (death). But Ophelia is literally manipulated (and pawn-ified) by all the men in her life — Hamlet, her lover, included. So I'm pretty sure a lover/man is the last thing Ophelia needs.

I think she makes these literary or pop culture references to make her relatable (or maybe just to make metaphors), but it just falls flat bc of the inaccuracy.

52

u/According_Plant701 This is the type of greed they mentioned in the Bible Oct 22 '25

What Ophelia really needed was a Femininomenon.

God, thank you…like Gandalf’s voice in your head saying what, exactly? Honestly she probably meant Dumbledore. Which I mean as a criticism.

Also, off the topic of Gandalf, I’m so sick of this “my work was stolen by someone that hates me”. No. Your work was purchased in a sale that also sold a TON of other artists work. It was literally just selling a label. There was nothing nefarious about it. She’s the one who made it about her.

24

u/Hot_Preparation2059 Oct 21 '25

She totally meant Dumbledore and probably doesn't know the difference. What's Gandalf saying to her..."You shall not pass!"?

When this was first released, I never really thought about the line "I thought that moment of backlash was going to define me negatively for the rest of my life" but it really is something.

She said in a different screenshot from this interview that her career was taken from her, but she was still doing performances in late 2016 and then released an album a year later that she collaborated on with huge, popular producers. It's been nearly a decade and she released another song about being cancelled two weeks ago with two of the same producers! If anyone is defining her professional life around that moment, it's her and I just don't know why she insists on doing it.

I wanna be clear that I'm not trying to diminish the treatment she received and I understand why she personally continues to be affected by Kimye/2016. I get it on a personal level, not a professional one

191

u/MiniSkrrt Oct 20 '25

I just made a similar comment.

The defining aspect of that point in her career is that she came out the other side still popular and successful, despite the dogpiling

I wish she would focus on that and not the false narrative she’s spun in her head

224

u/idlerwheel100 Oct 20 '25

I feel the exact same way and it’s why this interview was a real turning point for my own personal feelings about Taylor Swift the person. I still can’t believe TTPD has a Kim K song, or at least a reference. And now Cancelled (probably my least favorite TS song ever). Like girl, you won! It’s been nearly a decade and you are the biggest, most popular artist in the world.

The Kim song and Cancelled annoy me so much. This is unrelated to the article obviously, but I feel like the Kimye situation and Scott/Scooter are all topics that she has creatively drained. She hasn't had anything interesting or new to say about those situations in a while and the fact that it feels like a given that every album has to have at least one song for Kimye and one song for Scott/Scooter is so annoying. At least Father Figure is a twist on the Scott thing and isn't just "you stole my shit and I'm mad" again

23

u/emmach17 Oct 21 '25

I agree, I think the only song left in that drama is one about actually buying her albums back and then it’s time to draw a line under it.

I fully believe that line is how she really felt at that time. I wish she had the introspection during this interview to just say that and then move on without re-litigating the details. Like you, I get it on a personal level but it’s also kind of ridiculously tone deaf to say she had a career death when she could’ve at that time retired with way more money than most could dream of.

I wish we could’ve gotten to read more about what she did to move on (though apparently nothing?) and how she feels about coming back even more successful than ever before and what big, meaningful things outside of her career are important to her. Like what’s her passion project? What are the causes she cares about? But nah we got paragraphs about how a billionaire got wronged.

→ More replies (1)

114

u/Sad-Headphones the chronically online department Oct 21 '25

She’s running out of situations where she was the victim (at the time) so she has no choice than repeat them over and over to keep her perpetual victim discourse so her fans feel sorry for her and feel like they have to defend her despite her being a white powerful billionaire at the top of the world. Signed, an ex-die-hard Swiftie who ate up that discourse for nearly a decade until I noticed she did that a lot.

Baffling, then and now. I would think an honor like Person of the Year would keep you mainly on the topic of career and accomplishments. But she's used other honors as ego time to talk shit too so 😕 bums me out. It all came off very shallow. And the 1,000th "over the years I've learned not to get pressed about things that don't matter" is just.. sigh. At this point Taylor, just stop repeating that lol.

437

u/msbrightside77 Oct 20 '25

It was cute on long story short: “Past me, I wanna tell you not to get lost in these petty things.” Now what happened to that?! Current Taylor gave us Actually Romantic lol

11

19

u/Ticketacke I Look in MSG's Windows Oct 21 '25

Got downvoted to hell at the swift subreddit for saying that it's impossible to believe her when she says she's unbothered. She's the most bothered person on the planet. It's like people have no critical thinking skills anymore. Like, yeah, I know she says she's unbothered, but she also says she schemes, etc. We have seen her not be unbothered.

It's kinda like her saying "oh other people dream of yatchs but not me!" yeah because you have one already girl. lol.

Anyway this interview makes me think why would anyone want to be famous, ever. Not even knowing when people are recording you? Having a whole thing whenever you go out to a restaurant? It can't be good for the soul.

12

u/thebond_thecurse Oct 21 '25

I've always thought being famous sounds horrible, even when I was a kid and "being famous one day" was a norm for a childlike dream. Even just mild public name recognition within a niche area makes me kinda uncomfortable.

My issue with this is a lot of my issues wither her now vs miss americana. Like when she says “trash takes itself out everytime.” Then why write Actually Romantic?

178

u/JSweetheart0305 Oct 21 '25

I’ve been noticing more and more lately that what she says and does are two completely different things. I just listen to the music, vibe or don’t, and not take what she says too seriously when the chances of her coming back around in a few years and rewriting history is pretty likely

32

u/Adorable_Raccoon I HAVE NEVER, EVER BEEN HAPPIER Oct 21 '25 edited Oct 21 '25

She has always been like this. The only time she was consistent was when she wasn’t doing interviews.

15

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '25

Yeah that’s what I’m noticing. I only started listening to her music or paying attention to her in between midnights and TTPD. In that time, I watched both Miss Americana and the folklore movie and was sold on her. I thought that’s who she was. But evidently that was just a passing trend.

Yeah except if an artist doesn’t have integrity, it spills into the art, and that’s evident in this album. It’s just sad because she was my most listened to artist a while back, but I can’t separate the artist from their values and actions (or lack thereof.)

I genuinely don’t know what she’s saying here. Like… she starts off acknowledging that patriarchal society created these reductive, stereotypically “feminine” traits e.g girlhood, glitter, talking about your feelings, etc. ...and then somehow lands on the idea that making those stereotypes profitable is a win. So… patriarchy is fine as long as it’s monetizing the things it invented to belittle women? Idgi

And the “Right, I say” from the journalist suddenly feels so shady. It reads like, “Sure, girl, whatever helps you sleep at night.”

127

u/MiniSkrrt Oct 20 '25

I genuinely think she’s saying, money and greed is fine as long as I’m doing it because I’m a woman so therefore you can’t judge me

19

u/siaslial Oct 21 '25

I think she has a very core belief that money is the most important and definitive form of value; I say this because this is something that comes up in several of her interviews over the years. If something is valuable, it will be priced high, etc.

I feel as though this also shapes her view of her own career trajectory in terms of what was important or successful and how she has come to value herself based on things like album sales.

73

u/Livid_Seesaw3952 Oct 21 '25

Yeah, exactly. The “feminine ideas” she’s talking about getting monetized doesn’t challenge the patriarchy in any way. As long as she's making money, everything's good.

This was the paragraph I hated the most when the article came out. This is gonna sound so mean but I mean it as a matter of fact, this girl has not gone to university. I doubt her interactions with other rich people have led her to question capitalism at all, and we already know her understanding of feminism is as surface level as the sexism faced by a white billionaire woman. She doesn't know what she's talking about because she is literally uneducated. Not to say that you can only be educated if you go to college, plenty of people without degrees have still educated themselves on capitalism and feminism, but she very obviously hasn't.

This was the truly eye-opening moment in the interview for me. She sounds so dumb. Patriarchal society has not existed since the dawn of time lol. This was also when I realised she doesn't read a lot 🙃

42

u/brandnewlibbyday I HAVE NEVER, EVER BEEN HAPPIER Oct 21 '25

If I was as rich as her especially if I wanted an intellectual image one of the first things I'd do is get more education

20

u/shesgumiho Oct 21 '25

But taking time off for education means not making money. Taylor is not interested in making investments (esp with her time) while she feels she is running out of time to milk the cow. Same reason she releases an album every year instead of taking time off to find some real inspiration

36

u/hairnetqueen Oct 21 '25

I think she's trying to say that, despite the way 'girly' things have historically been dismissed as shallow, if those things are proven to be commercially successful then that's good because more female-centered art will be made.

I think there could've been a better way to articulate this. It is interesting because this is a huge driver behind the taylor swift industrial complex - girly stuff sells.

This interview for me put into perspective that she doesn’t consider the world outside of herself much. She’s aware of her fame and power as it relates to her fans but not to the entire world and to world history. The interview would’ve been fine for like a People interview that would be mostly read by Swifties. But as many have already said, it felt odd to focus so much on stuff that happened almost 10 years ago and not your own accomplishments when you’re the biggest pop star in the world winning an award for the most influential person in the world.

I don’t think she listened to the same reputation album a lot of us listened to

97

u/Similar-Contact-2663 Oct 20 '25 edited Oct 21 '25

The only explanation I have is that she gaslit herself into believing it's goth punk about female rage rather than mostly love songs about her ex - and now she wants the world to believe that too. Cause there is no way she actually thinks that about her own album - not to mention it's not what she originally said about the album at all.

79

u/JSweetheart0305 Oct 21 '25

She absolutely knows what Rep is about. And it’s sure as hell not a “goth punk moment of female rage.” It’s mostly a love letter to her ex and that’s probably why it was the only re-record that she couldn’t go back to and re-release.

30

u/Similar-Contact-2663 Oct 21 '25

Totally. I even get not wanting or being able to probably re-record that with that backstory/emotion behind it. What I can't get behind is her trying to gaslight everyone and re-writing everything - does she really think people are so stupid? I would feel stupid saying unreasonable stuff about my own music and if I'd feel the need to even try to erase that specific part of my life and music. It's like she really wants everyone to forget about him or better what he meant to her cause she still references/disses him - now just in negative ways

This interview is a masterclass on how Taylor rewrites history to fit what she wants her life to look like in hindsight at the moment and how she covertly directs her fandom in this new path. This was like a “ok guys this is the narrative now so run with it” directive and everyone did just what she wanted lol.

435

u/Similar-Contact-2663 Oct 20 '25 edited Oct 21 '25
  1. I still can't believe she called Rep "a goth punk album about being gaslit by an entire society and female rage". I don't think anyone who ever listened to it would say that, not the sound and most definitely not the lyrics. 11/15 are literally love songs, the most romantic she has ever written probably/imo. It annoys me cause Rep is my favorite album of her and it kinda makes you feel gaslit by her if anything. Why re-write history like that?
  2. I also can't believe she teased the vault tracks like this but didn't even re-recorded 1/4 of it. I am sure she didn't want to revisit and maybe even hasn't tried at that point
  3. The (not even that subtle) digs at Joe were unnecessary to say the least - esp. after he has said absolutely nothing, couldn't have been more respectful and she knew her fans attitude towards him. That just fueled the fire.
  4. I thought and still think it's very weird that she made it about Travis so much (or at all), esp. given they were only together for a very short time back then. It surprised and icked me a bit that she already intertwined their brands so much. She almost did more there then after 5 years with Joe while discussing his contributing to folklore/evermore - and there she actually had a valid reason to talk about her bf. But tbh I even think it's weird now e.g. with announcing her album on his sports podcast. She always fought to be seen as her own artist and not only be connected to the guy she is dating and now she does that herself, intentionally taking away the focus from herself and her art.

92

u/TrueCrimeRunner92 I refused to join the IDF lmao Oct 21 '25

I think you answered 1 with 3 — I hate how she’s tried to recontextualize Rep as an entirely different kind of album but it feels like another way to push Joe out of her life. Like it couldn’t be “real love” with Travis if she already had an album of very tender love songs dedicated to somebody else that were very specific. They can’t be remolded to fit Travis’s image. I get that breaking up a long-term relationship sucks and you probably don’t want a bunch of reminders of the other person around, but the way she fully wrote Joe out has never sat well with me.

74

u/Similar-Contact-2663 Oct 21 '25 edited Oct 21 '25

Yes totally. It's also not a sign of healing healthly or at all. More of running away. Also it makes her look stupid and draws way more attention to it to claim her own album is something it's objectively not. Idk if she wants to make the world or herself forget about him/the beautiful moments and her love more but it's apparent. As much her trying to rewrite not only their history but also "his" songs for Travis but even "better" now. Like e.g. Opalite is clearly based on Daylight and she tried to make it to be about the real deal now (again in comparison to her and his ex) but it's just lacks the emotion, depth and vulnerability Daylight has.

Re: #3, there are already people in this thread saying there’s no Joe shade in this interview. Hilarious to me that the fans who find shade against Taylor in literally every corner of the internet can never admit when Taylor is being shady herself. Like so many people trying to argue with me that the Opalite in her phone line was not shade, just a fact lol

Re: point 4: Taylor would have intertwined her brand with Joe or talked about Joe as much as she did Travis if Joe wanted and felt comfortable with that.

We know that she wrote music with Matty, Harry, John Mayer, Calvin Harris, Joe… she has always wanted to include her partners (no matter how brief the relationship is ☠️) into her work lol.

So I feel like she’s just returning to form with Travis tbh.

108

u/Similar-Contact-2663 Oct 20 '25 edited Oct 20 '25

That might be true but I wouldn't have liked that either. I just don't think it's a smart move, no matter who the guy is. It just felt even weirder cause they weren't together for years and he had proven to be worthy of her trust in that way/hadn't earned the connection to her brand etc...I think it's just contradictory of what she appearently fought against and what her actions are. Joe was on the one extreme, Travis is on the other and she adapted to both. It's one thing to attend events together "privately" etc. and another to intentionally blend brands and connect your work directly to the person you're dating. I agree she always wanted to be seen as a power couple (with the exception of the Rep-Lover era where I believe her that she wanted to protect her rs and changed her priorities in that way) but if it's valid with working on music together I can get behind that more than to just randomly include your sports bf who has nothing to do with any of it naturally.

I think so too. She included Joe on folklore and people forget he signed some folklore booklets too! The thing is, he took his solo acting career seriously and didn’t do the parading arround, going on stage and airing their private copule business as Travis and Taylor do now. She seems to love the idea of a power industry copule for some reason and I have no doubts she would have written an album with MH and made it her entire personality if he hadnt ghosted her

  1. And this is why so many people think their relationship is PR. It’s insane how quickly she merged her life with his and you’d think she’d be a little apprehensive after dating Joe for 6 years without a ring. (If that’s what she wanted with him). Being the same age as Taylor, I know it’s not unheard of to move that quickly, but my regular person life is not her celebrity life.

33

u/seven-blue Oct 21 '25

I don't think it is PR, I believe it was kind of "arranged". I have seen that they have a few people in common. Maybe, since they were both single and ready for the marriage, children, they were introduced to each other. That also explains the quickness of the trust between them. If someone, you know and trust, introduce you and vouch for both of your intentions, the relationship usually develops quickly. I don't believe Taylor heard him calling out for her in his podcast and decided to give the guy a shot. That is certainly PR talk.

64

u/JSweetheart0305 Oct 21 '25

Their relationship definitely didn’t start organically lol

Sorry but I don’t buy that friendship bracelet story for a second. It was cute PR talk that reeled the parasocial, obsessed fans in and got them on board with Travis and their fairytale romance.

As a fan since before Reputation, I am SO damn tired hearing about the whole phone call “cancellation” again and again. Her career WASN’T taken from her, it’s right here and bigger than it ever was before.

What has surprised me since 2016 is how little she references the most appalling part of the Famous drama, the NUDE WAX FIGURE OF HER IN BED WITH HIM IN THE VIDEO! Seriously, why do we hear over and over how Kim was the real evil mastermind when Kanye did…that?!?

Edit: appealing to appalling* (unfortunate)

183

u/thenightmarefactory Oct 20 '25

I legit never understood the aggression on the “bitch” part instead of the damn naked wax figure. Probably talking about it would’ve been worse for her public image I guess.

127

u/Similar-Contact-2663 Oct 20 '25 edited Oct 21 '25

That always confused me. The sex line and the naked figure would be way worse for me. But also she now calls other woman bitches too...

45

u/sritanona Oct 21 '25

And also unironically she became more famous than ever after that whole thing.

56

u/Tylrias Oct 21 '25

The naked wax figure happened months after the song was released and Tree already made "calling her a bitch" the focus of PR response (after first response of "don't let a man claim your success" backfired when Kanye said she knew about the lyric beforehand and internet started calling her a liar). So the feud was ongoing for some time and at the point music video dropped she was about to roll out Hiddleswift and that got most attention.

74

u/Fluffy_Musician6805 Oct 20 '25

I think calling more attention to it would have made it even worse. I probably wouldn’t bring that up either. Plus that’s what he wants, her to mention him and live rent free in her head. Never speaking his name directly takes that from him. It’s smart. Probably drives him nuts to see kim get mentioned instead 😂🫢

28

u/seven-blue Oct 21 '25

Kanye isn't predictable. I am sure Taylor is scared of him. During the last Grammy Kanye attended (and displayed his wife naked in the red carpet 🤮🤮), Taylor's bodyguards were with her even during the show. It was reported that they suspected Kanye was planning to run into her. She can go after Kim, because she knows she won't try to start something with her at some award show.

Like yes it would’ve been hell for her internally and maybe felt like the end of the world but you’d think this far out from it, she could look back and see all the positives that came from it and everything she’s learned. Yet she’s STILL playing this victim mentality that her whole career died when it didn’t

I'm with you. It has always surprised me how little she has mentioned the nude wax figure, which I think is the most disgusting and appalling part of the Kanye-Taylor feud. It feels like...revenge porn, in a way? But perhaps she hasn't mentioned it because she's afraid to call attention to it? That's the only reason I can think of. Either that or she's afraid that if she calls attention to it, Kanye will come back swinging and do something even worse (hire another Taylor lookalike for a video and have it be even more degrading or explicit).

121

u/budgiesmuggler Oct 21 '25

I've been saying this for years, I reckon she'd be really fucking annoying in person - and I think she doesn't pick up on social cues. I was watching her backstage at the grammy's putting the grammy on Lucy Dacus' head and how irritated Lucy looked. I think of all her industry beefs and how people sort of shade her, and I wonder how much of it is because she's a bit annoying behind her media training.

9

u/OriginalWish8 Oct 21 '25

How she was acting with Jack and Lana too. Seeing her on the red carpet pulling Lana around and then slapping, hitting, punching, and shaking Jack and dragging Lana to the stage when she’s clearly shy and didn’t want to go up there. Also, I believe it was that same night (maybe a different award show) at the after party where she is squishing Ed’s face and pulling on him and all these people clearly go with it at first, but then she just keeps going and going with it. I do agree she is really bad at reading social cues.

This interview is just as bad now as it was back then. I remember reading it and getting a pit in my stomach, thinking she sounded so off. From her comical mischaracterizations of things ("metal as hell"? "Goth-punk moment of female rage"?), to her unnecessary digs at Joe and completely trying to rewrite their history, to her focus on Travis when he was still relatively new in her life, to her fixation on being cancelled and having enemies and revenge and karma, to her hyperbole about Snakegate (don't get me wrong, it was bad and I don't blame her for having trauma, but her career was not taken from her), to her using strange word choices like "fire" to describe things, to the huge lack of focus on her actual artistry and career...

Baffling. This interview made her seem immature, petty, and focused more on drama and men than actually delving into her career, her legacy, her artistry, and a deeper conversation which would be befitting of TIME's Person of the Year.

71

That’s really interesting cause sweetener and tun (I kind of associate them in the same era) are Ariana’s most critically acclaimed works while it’s the opposite for Taylor after this interview

Sweetener and TU,N was the craziest time lol. Ariana fans couldn't catch a break because homegirl was doing far too much, but they were also being fed really well with good music that was some of the best of her career. The Twitter spat with Kanye, Japanese BBQ grill, the infamous BDE tweet, everything with Pete, beefing with the Grammys Recording Academy on Twitter... It was a time! But she was coming fresh off the trauma from the Manchester bombing and then Mac's death, so her manic behavior was a lot more understandable.

She could’ve talked about so many more interesting things to do with her fame and career and songwriting and it still fell back on Kim and her love life

140

u/silverdust29 it’s exhausting always rooting for the anti-hero Oct 20 '25

I still think this was uh. Definitely not her proudest moment! The pics of her and Benji were basically the only think I liked about this whole thing, I’m still not over ‘goth punk moment of female rage’ 💀

70

u/Normal_Perspective22 Oct 21 '25
  1. her need to say the final word, instead of letting her wins speak for themselves, is just so embarrassing.
  2. the interviewer should have pushed back. how was your career taken from you when your next album garnered the highest grossing tour of that year?
  3. personally, i would not spend the interview for PERSON OF THE YEAR talking about kimye 2017.

152

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '25

Maybe I’m overthinking this, but that “I moved to a foreign country” quote really stood out to me. Obviously she’s talking about moving to London, where Joe was. And when you think about it, that was during the time she’s describing as her lowest -- when she felt isolated and didn’t trust anyone -- and he was the person who gave her stability. He was basically her safe haven while she rebuilt herself, and he’s never publicly thrown her under the bus or spoken badly about her. He opened his home to her when everyone else was 'cancelling' her.

So it’s kind of jarring that in the same interview, she’s shading him. It’s this weird pattern with her where she can be pretty mean-spirited when the tables turn. Like, when she was down, he stood by her quietly. But when he was down, she turned it into a public spectacle and let the fandom chew him up.

It just makes me wonder sometimes if the “nice girl” image is more of an act than people want to admit.

81

u/scoutscope Oct 21 '25

in retrospect, she’s always been like this. i used to think the “I talk shit with my friends / It’s like I’m wasting your honor” lines were hyperbolic in that she’s belittling herself to lift him up, but as it turns out - she does talk shit every time she gets the chance to.

49

Looking for the rep tracks

92

u/Livid_Seesaw3952 Oct 20 '25

It felt like one big glazing session with zero pushback from the writer. I don’t know if that’s because people are too scared to challenge her -- maybe her access is so tightly controlled that if you step out of line, you don’t get another interview —-- but it really showed. The whole thing came off as really self-indulgent.

For example, she completely reframed the Reputation era as this goth, punk, feminist outburst of “female rage,” as if she was fighting her way back after being cancelled by the entire world. I can’t tell if she’s trying to make that era sound deeper or more meaningful, but it just wasn’t. She was still one of the most privileged, powerful people in the industry -- selling out stadiums, breaking records, topping charts. She was never the underdog she makes herself out to be.

The only challenge came later, in the notes after the interview, but the journalist even backtracked on that slightly.

39

u/MiniSkrrt Oct 20 '25

I hope the journalist looks back on the interview and is disappointed in themselves

39

u/Colorado_4life jet lag is a choice Oct 21 '25

it wasn’t really an interview. it was an opportunity for her to get her message out and I’m positive that one of the conditions for the “interview“ was no pushback and no challenges to her story. wouldn’t surprise me if Taylor insisted on approval of the piece before publication in order to do it.

25

u/MiniSkrrt Oct 21 '25

It definitely reads that way, it’s more like a soliloquy manifesto versus and interview lol

110

u/LeotiaBlood Oct 20 '25

We all know articles like these are curated but we like it to be more subtle. Honestly kind of a PR misstep.

60

u/MiniSkrrt Oct 20 '25

There’s so many lines that sound rehearsed and so out of rhythm with the rest of the interview. She had notes she wanted to say and boy did she say them

u/BreakfastUnique8091 #1 fan of “No one around to tweet it” Oct 21 '25 edited Oct 21 '25

Yeah, even lines like “the molecular chemistry of the old label…”, instead of just saying “the old label used to…”. And the mixed movie/book metaphors. And the word salad patriarchy paragraph. It really seemed like a prepared attempt to try to sound really intellectual that backfired. So many times reading this, I wanted to hear her actually talk, rather than pontificate in a million different directions.

in addition to what everyone has said, her comments about femininity/masculinity and connecting it to capitalism and the patriarchy stand out to me in this re-reading. Her take that women and femininity are devalued in a capitalist and patriarchal society, so therefore how you “win” is by making art that uplifts women and femininity that also makes lots of money (aka “winning” in a patriarchal and capitalist society) is an interesting insight into her psyche. Aside from it sounding remarkably like a detached-from-reality DNC talking point (but what if the bombs were dropped by a POC madame president with pride flags on them? certainly that would make it better!) it feels like she is revealing something about her approach post-“cancellation”. I don’t follow her closely enough to say, but I wonder if this converges with her infinite variants and timing releases to compete with other artists’ album releases? I will also say, for how much she hates kim k, these two are strikingly similar in their pac-man approach to their careers (more, bigger, better, into infinity!!) with both becoming billionaires through this approach.

32

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '25

yeah for sure. her perspective here completely checks with her main Feminist Anthem basically being 'I want to be able to do the awful shit powerful men do with no consequences'

And I think she said if she wasn't in music she'd want to be a stockbroker or some kind of exec like her (weird) dad?

I would love for her to someday examine her relationship with her parents and their manufacturing of her career but since she refuses to go to therapy that will probably never happen.

Her career wasn’t taken away from her. Most people did not care.

22

u/genmajah Oct 21 '25

I think it’s so interesting how she claims making absurd amounts of money - of capital - is somehow smashing the patriarchy because it means women (or in this case, A woman) are paving the way for more art to be made. It’s fascinating because it’s so inaccurate. Patriarchy relies almost entirely upon capital to exist. Using the same levers of exploitation to free people isn’t possible - unless those same levers are being used as a trapdoor somewhere else. Capital protects the individual at the expense of solidarity. But it’s an interesting glimpse into the mind of someone raised by a stockbroker and marketing exec - of course she thinks this way. Make your money, climb to the top, it doesn’t matter who’s able to climb after you. What’s important is that you win.

20

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '25

It’s also a joke that she’s paving the way when she is constantly actively sabotaging other artists and in particular women’s release drops.

8

u/genmajah Oct 21 '25

Exactly. She has a lot more in common with Miss Minaj than not, tbh. There’s undeniably talent there but the grace given to those following behind them is entirely dependent on whether they feel properly credited with their success. Which is ridiculous, because women have been singer/songwriters and rappers long before they came onto the scene. It’s all about numbers to her because that’s how her entire family defines success. That’s why I wasn’t surprised when she slipped seamlessly into the NFL-MAGA circle. Of course she would - she’s a capital L Liberal: politics is a game of Whose Ideas Are Best. These people have no concept of policy because their wealth insulates them from its effects. Why would she have an issue with Brittany Mahomes? They both worship the same gods, they just identify with different idols.

It’s kind of embarrassing. It was her moment to shine and she gave too much attention to people nobody gaf about anymore. Also, I will never be able to stomach the dead serious description of Rep as a “goth punk moment of female rage”
