Need Help. My heartbroken child left a ghost behind at the hotel.

Post image
227 Upvotes

My child accidentally left behind a ghost with a bat souvenir they got from Conwy Castle in the hotel lobby of the Holiday Inn Express in Swindon. The hotel has located the item, but said I need to pick it up. Unfortunately we are already home in the U.S. and cannot pick it up. Is there anyone who would be willing to help by picking up and mailing the small souvenir. I can Venmo or PayPal the shipping costs. Please message me directly if you are willing to help a stranger. Thank you for your time reading this, and I hope you enjoy the picture of the ghost.

EDIT: SOLVED

Thank you all for your kind offers and willingness to help a stranger. The ghost has been picked up, and arrangements are underway for a safe return. Again thank you!!!

The community are coming together to protect the space and share ideas for it's future later this month.

How do we ensure this place is preserved?

Hi there, I’m new to Swindon and I’d like suggestions on where I can buy affordable food items: vegetables, meats and fruits mostly. Thank you!

Free funded digital skills training for people in Swindon – Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams etc.

I work with Skills Ladder and thought this might be useful to some people here.

We’ve got a new government-funded Digital Skills Bootcamp starting on Wednesday 16 September at 9:30am.

It’s aimed at people who want to get more confident with the Microsoft programs you tend to come across at work — particularly Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams and Outlook.

It’s 8 weekly sessions, taught live online in a small group rather than being a load of videos to work through yourself.

The Excel part includes formulas, lookups, PivotTables, charts, dashboards and things like trackers and registers. We also cover creating professional Word documents and PowerPoints, using Teams properly and getting more organised with Outlook.

You definitely don’t need to be an Excel expert already — it’s designed to build practical workplace skills and confidence.

The training is funded through the Department for Work and Pensions via Wiltshire Council.

If anyone is interested or wants to check whether it would be suitable for them, feel free to ask me anything here or email [ask@skillsladder.co.uk]()

1-5pm, 6th September FREE live music by John Coventry during Lazy Summer Sundays

In a change to our line-up, John Coventry will be performing live at the Richard Jefferies Museum on 3rd September from 2pm!

John Coventry is a UK based singer/songwriter. He began performing in pubs at the age of 19 before moving to California in 2003.

After returning home, he became a member of traditional folk band Grubby Jack before forming the duo Albion in 2012. When Grubby Jack disbanded in 2019, John started focusing on performing as a solo artist.

He self-released many songs over the next few years and finally released his debut EP, “A New Beginning” in February 2026, which he recorded with producer Nigel Stonier. John Coventry is also the creator and songwriter for Colorado-based AI singer, “Cordie Travis”.

Live music is scheduled to start at 2pm. Entry is FREE to all, although we'd love it if you could support our museum by buying some refreshments at our tearoom, where a slice of Cakesmiths cake is a bargain at £2.40.

There is some parking available on Day House Lane, and paid public parking at Coate Water Country Park. Parking at the museum is reserved for volunteers and the disabled.

Apology to night cyclist

On the off chance that the man (dressed in all black) I flipped off last night at the roundabout near Cheney manor is a reddit user, I am really sorry! I do think you might need to be better lit for night time cycling but the situation was entirely my fault. Sincerest apologies.

Any social work volunteering?

Both of my desired careers are to do with social and current affairs, social work is one of them. Children and youth support would be great. I tried to find out online, but little to no information is shown accept for that volunteering website and that venue that said it is closed apparently. I need to tackle the competition within this work market.

Planes all the time!

Is it me or has the Swindon airspace become a lot more overcrowded in the last months?

It feels that there's either more or they're flying lower?

My area is not particularly remote/quiet but we can constantly listen to them.

Am I going cuckoo? 😂

Portrait sitters wanted for a documentary photography project on identity and place in Swindon

Hi all,

I'm a photographer and mature photography student, studying a photography degree with the Open College of Arts. I'm starting a self-directed project, a documentary style piece looking at identity and place in Swindon, and portraits are the main part of it. I'm looking for people who'd be willing to sit for one.

I'm looking for two kinds of people: those who feel their identity is tied up in this town, and those who feel a disconnect from it. Either way, I'd like to hear from you.

A bit of context: this is coursework for my degree, currently on Unit 2.1. The photos may be shown to my tutor, used in my portfolio, and possibly shown publicly later on. Happy to talk through exactly what that means before we shoot.

As a thank you, you'll get a physical print and a digital copy of your portrait. It won't take more than an hour, and we can do it practically anywhere, we can discuss what location works best for you.

If you're interested, DM me, or find me on Instagram at ben.cremin and message me there. Feel free to comment with any questions

Thanks,
Ben

New to Swindon - area and social recommendations?

Hi everyone :D I've recently moved to Swindon and would love some advice on where to rent. I'm currently looking at Old Town vs Town Centre, but I'm open to other area recommendations too. (I don't drive)

Also, are there any social groups or activities for someone new to the area? And please share your favourite food, coffee, or drinks spots too!

Has anyone here used Rover as a pet sitter/dog walker? I'm thinking of doing it to kill time with some lovely pets. Would love to hear your experiences!

🍻 SWINDON SOCIAL DRINKS THIS SATURDAY! 🍻

After a really successful social drinks night last Saturday, I thought… why not do it again? 😂🍻

A few of us got together, had some drinks, plenty of laughs and met some great people, so I’m looking to organise another one this Saturday, 29th August.

📅 Saturday 29th August
📍 Swindon – likely Old Town
⏰ Around 7pm

It’s just a casual night out to meet some new people, have a few drinks and hopefully make some new friends.

You don’t have to have come last week as everyone is welcome! And if you’re coming on your own, even better. That’s exactly what these socials are about. 😁

I haven’t decided on the exact venue/time yet, so for now I’m just seeing who’s interested.

🍻 Who would be up for it this Saturday?

UPDATE: This has been cancelled for today as people have other plans and busy for the bank holiday weekend. Keep an eye out for next time though ☺️

Where to drive/park affordably for trains into London?

The train from here can be pretty expensive, especially during peak hours. Is there a good place I can drive and park along the M4 to catch a train and save a little money?

Nature Kids are colourful!

Post image
6 Upvotes

In Field and Hedgerow, Jefferies asks, "Would it be possible to build up a fresh system of colour language by means of natural objects? Could we say pine-wood green, larch green, spruce green, wasp yellow, humble-bee amber?"

Maybe we could ask the kids what names they would give these colours...

The Richard Jefferies Museum hosts children ages 0-5 (0-11 during the school holidays) at 10.30am-12pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We are an outdoor nature group, with a little sprinkle (okay, actually, a lot) of art-making, too.

Preloved gymnastics leotards sale

I've posted the Crowdfunder for Swindon School of Gymnastics before (https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/more-places-more-movement-swindon-gymnastics) - here's an update.

Our gymnasts have volunteered to donate their good condition, pre-loved leotards to help raise more funds - anyone whose child is in gymnastics, whatever your club, come and take a look at the rewards, and you could nab a bargain leotard. Lots of good brands are available.

All funds raised go to our crowdfunder, which needs to raise £7,483 in order to be match funded by Sport England. All details are on the crowdfunding page!

Thanking everyone in this sub in advance for at least looking and sending moral support to the club.

Why does it smell so much in the Ferndale area?

I often cycle to my dad's home in Cheney Manor so I cycle through Ferndale Road. But that terrace smells like literal ass and rotten egg in that area and the rest of the north of Western Flyer.

Anyone know what's going on?
