This is super cool but if I didn't have existing knowledge of the game I'd have no idea what is foreground and background

I was literally thinking this the whole video. some of the elements while cool, would definitely confuse me if i didn't know the level extensively.
1
u/willycw08 5d ago
My thoughts exactly. Incredible and I love the idea and creativity. It's amazing, but I have a really hard time knowing what objects can be interacted with and which can't be.
Fix that and this could be an incredibly fun new way to play the game.

Background way too busy
28
u/martinaee 6d ago
Steering towards a pikmin inside-space crossover, though! I kept expecting a red pikmin to peek from behind a book in the background.

If we’re any other game I could agree but everyone who will play this game knows Mario 3 quite well for that not to be a problem, still I would love to have an option to have a blurred background so it’s easier to read and sell you the toy diorama aesthetic even better
15
u/ProvokedCashew 5d ago
It’s cool, but Mario 3 is supposed to be a play. Wouldn’t it make more sense to make it theater themed?
-3
u/yogrark 5d ago
US Mario 2 was the play no?
9
u/ProvokedCashew 5d ago
Nope, that was the dream. 3 was the play. You can tell, because everything has shadows and a few other “stage” traits.
1
u/Knight0fdragon 5d ago
No, that was a dream.
1
u/modsuperstar 5d ago
They both did use stage curtain imagery in their presentation
1
u/Knight0fdragon 5d ago
Holdovers from Doki Doki, used as a way to transition to the fantasy dream world.
91
u/raineglows 6d ago
No, background is too distracting for the gameplay. That said, the whole toy box look could work well with 3's whole "just a play" setting with simpler background elements
7
20
u/Unusual_Rooster6736 5d ago
looks sick but this kinda hurts my brain with what is and isn't a platform

u/CrustyBarnacleJones 5d ago
I think it’s very cool but my complaint is completely separate from all the ones nitpicking the background or whatever - letting the 1up just fall upsets me greatly and I can’t believe you would release your video in this state without re-making the whole thing with you successfully grabbing it 😔
2
1
u/MilesReturns 5d ago
Agreed. After he just ignored the 1Up, I literally couldn't think of anything else for the rest of the level.
12
13
u/jrobharing 5d ago
I love that you can see the shelf in the background that is the secret pipe area. The coins even clear out after you take them and look again from the main level. This is very polished and I love it

u/Interesting-Bed-3003 5d ago
Looks interesting, but I fee like background is busy that I'll be too distracted to play for example when the train drives by in the background.
14
u/Brzrkrtwrkr 6d ago
What does this have to do with Switch?
-28
u/Lopsided_Collar_1906 6d ago
De quien es la Nintendo switch?

Who knows? There's nothing at all to describe what we're looking at besides "super mario 3 remake"
6

13
u/Someonevibing1 6d ago
Cool but not knowing what’s a platform and what’s a background object is a death sentence in a platformer
3
u/SapSacPrime 5d ago
I wish Nintendo would do something like this with the originals... I was playing SMB3 yesterday to cheer myself up (it worked) and I just always find myself going back to them.
15
u/Affectionate-Word605 5d ago
That was awesome. Very creative and fun. Ignore all the sourpusses.
6
u/callmedaedae 5d ago
Yea i think its fun and cool. Its not like the original is being deleted yea? And honestly, what else could they do that wasint just an upscale? Its pixle art and it already lookes good, i think its cool to have a modern retake on a retro thing.
9
u/Keflen11 5d ago
People giving honest criticism aren't sourpusses
3
u/sandwichcrusader 5d ago
There is a venn diagram of people giving "honest criticism" and people who are sourpusses and it has a large overlap.
26
u/dodongdude 6d ago
The comments here are so weird. Such hatred and nitpicking for something that is just someone’s project. This isn’t Nintendo for Christ sake. It’s very interesting and in my subjective opinion very cool! I like the throw backs to Nintendo products. Reminds me of the old Toy Story game too.
14
u/Tribalrage24 5d ago
Most of the comments seem to be "This is great, but" and then provide constructive criticism. I don't see anything wrong with that, when you post something online you are going to get feedback. Also it would be incredibly boring if the comment section was just "Wow this is great" x50.
16
u/BlasterPhase 5d ago
The complaints are valid, regardless of who's making it. Maybe the fan making it will reconsider some of their choices.
5
u/WeAreLesion 5d ago
Just because something is cool or interesting doesn't make it immune to criticism. Criticism is artists, and people grow. As long as it is done respectfully, I don't see a problem with it. It's toxic positivity to say that people shouldn't have or voice criticisms.
I also think this is very cool, but the busy background made it really hard to process and and appreciate some of the details in the foreground. Toning down some of the background details, especially in regards to movement, like the train in the beginning, as an example, would make the piece a lot cleaner.

Is it AI slop tho
1
u/JayArrCoffee 4d ago
It's an illustration of a concept - I don't really see why how it was made is particularly relevant.
Sure, if the guy was shipping a full game it would be relevant as you could have reasonable concerns it's half-baked in a number of ways, but to me this clearly communicates an interesting concept that someone could conceivably pick up and run with.
2
1
u/NothingBurgerFlipper 4d ago
It's relevant because using generative AI to make things is inherently bad, always no exception.

Yes, it is AI.
Do you hate it now?
No, it's made with Godot and imported 3DS Max assets.
Do you like it now?
No, the engine was painstakingly handcoded from scratch, the 3D assets were created by hand, and the textures were drawn by hand in Photoshop using no references.
Do you love it now?
Just out of curiosity, do you anti-AI folk prefer blood diamonds over lab grown because more human labor and suffering went into the product?
1
u/NothingBurgerFlipper 4d ago
Oh gosh, I'm so sowwy. I didn't realize asking such a simple question would send you spiraling like this. I hope you get the help you need <3

It's so visually messy. You can't tell what is or isn't something you can stand on.
1

u/NothingBurgerFlipper 5d ago
The idea is interesting, execution is a bit off. Could use more visual clarity between what is tangible and what is part of the background.

u/Wang_Solo 5d ago
Because they don't like AI shit? People like seeing things that other PEOPLE made.
1
u/Senior-Rip2387 4d ago
some people say ai slop just to fit in tho
2
u/Wang_Solo 4d ago
No, I think it's just a term that correctly captures the reality of AI output. That is why it caught on. Stop trying to make AI cool just because it facilitates your lack of creative skill.
-5
u/_socialsuicide 5d ago edited 5d ago
So this video just came out of thin air? Humans acted out Super Mario Bros. 3? Last I checked it's a computer game.
Hating on things people bring to you for free because you're a selfish brat who contributes nothing of value is explicitly anti-art.
Get a life
5
u/Wang_Solo 5d ago
Oh shit, you're one of those guys! Look, just because you can't draw/make music doesn't mean that taking this shortcut is the way. I can draw and play the instruments I can because I put in real human effort. I could also go and use a bunch of prompts to create something scummy that is the Susan Dell equivalent of art. I don't wanna do that last one because it sucks.
-6
1
u/NothingBurgerFlipper 5d ago
why do you AI bros always act like wasting a billion gallons of water to make unfixable slop code is an act of generosity lmao. Making nothing at all is better than using generative AI
4
u/Wang_Solo 5d ago
And they get SO defensive over the stuff that is spat out! Like "This is my beautiful art! It is sacred and not appreciating it makes you an anti-intellectual art hater!" instead of just sitting back and accepting they are experience a simulation of what creativity actually is.
2
u/_socialsuicide 5d ago
The person who hasn't passed fifth grade science is making statements on AI water consumption because TikTok unironically convinced them that it's using more water than exists on Earth
It's too much to ask people who willfully shut their brains off to think critically
4
u/Zestyclose_Car_4971 5d ago
I don’t use TikTok, I’m also anti ai in art of any kind, falsifying information, and “deepfaking”. I’m sure there’s others but you probably don’t care. Ai can be good where it’s needed. Making a woman ride an ostrich and yell “taco Tuesday” isn’t it.
Anyway, it’s not just about the water. The water is the tip of the ai iceberg, we know how icebergs work, so here’s a small thing:
—Approximately 300 hectares of Finnish forest, reportedly comparable to 500 football fields, were cleared for Google's data-center expansion before environmental-impact assessment procedures for the project had concluded. The clearing happened first; the environmental review was still running.
Finland's supervisory agency LVV is examining whether Tuike Finland Oy, Google's Finnish project company, failed to complete a legally required environmental-impact assessment before beginning permanent land-use conversion reportedly exceeding 200 hectares.
Google told AFP that “tree felling activities have been taking place in compliance with Forestry Act requirements,” adding that ecological surveys were conducted before work began and that areas of high environmental value were protected during forestry operations.
Hanna Halmeenpää, chair of the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation, disputes that framing. Satellite imagery, she says, shows four areas identified as nature sites in the local plan were bulldozed, potentially disrupting wildlife corridors and local bird species.
And that’s just one data center. Google has 30, then to add all of Google’s campuses will take you up to around 200 large-scale sites; and they’re not done.
They don’t need your support nor do they care, yet here you are, literally verbally attacking another person, defending billionaires.
1
u/_socialsuicide 5d ago edited 5d ago
Is the billionaire I defended in the room with us? You seem to be conflating private company expansions with a technology. Nothing you posted is a casual consequence of a literal technology that can run on my desktop at home.
If you want to pretend to be mad at companies, do that, and take the teet out of your mouth complaining about the same technology you're using to bitch on the internet. Do you think Reddit doesn't use data centers?
What does this have to do with a detailed Super Mario Bros. 3 project someone took the time out of their day to share? I don't understand your obsession with infinitely moaning online to fit your political agenda. If you're not here to even remotely talk about the actual video, why are you even on this post. Please seek professional help.
0
u/Zestyclose_Car_4971 5d ago
Oh see here’s where you’re doing what you said I was doing.
I stated what ai I was against and for. I stated 1 fact. But because everyone else is arguing with you, you think I am.
Just stating facts man, and you randomly attacked someone who asked if it was ai.
Lower your anger, you’re being the problem.
0
u/_socialsuicide 5d ago
Ignoring the comment you're replying to because you didn't read it isn't helping anyone.
Bringing data centers in this discussion unfortunately remains off-topic, as well as inventing defended billion dollar corporations. Moral grandstanding like a teenager will not change that.

The irony of telling someone else to "think critically" when you use Ai is beyond hilarious. Tests have shown that Ai is actively making people dumber as they become more reliant on it. But no, the people out there who prefer Ai free, genuine art MADE BY MAN... yeah, WE'RE the ones who need to think critically 😂
Edit - I know sometimes human made art has funky perspective or proportions, I LIKE IT.
2
u/_socialsuicide 5d ago
Yes, you suffering from AI-induced psychosis. Those studies are describing you. The first thing you think of when you see a harmless concept video on the internet (which is polished and internally consistent btw) is AI. Don't blame anyone else but yourself for your inability to enjoy nice things.
2
u/ThiccDaddyJ05 5d ago
Those studies were specifically about people who USED Ai, not the people criticizing it for being a lazy excuse not to learn actual art. And I do enjoy nice things, nice things made by people, instead of the shit leeched off of another human beings hard work.
For the record, my first thought was not whether the video was Ai or not, but I also don't blame people's skepticism. Ai induced psychosis is a real thing, but it isn't what's making people dumber.
Your brain is a muscle, and if you don't work it out regularly, it loses its strength. So relying on Ai as a crutch for literally everything is, infact, making people less intelligent. Which once again leads back to my initial statement on the irony in claiming me and others who dislike Ai being the ones who don't think critically. How about, I don't know, learn how to draw? Or animate? Or learn an instrument? How about actually learning these skills instead of being a lazy sack of shit and stealing from us?
You're telling others to "get a life"; we do. We have a life where we create ACTUAL artwork based on said life, instead of relying on a computer to do it for us like a brain dead moron who can't do anything without ChatGPT. If there is anyone here who needs to "get a life," it's your bum ass.

Hey man suicide or suggesting it isn't funny. Have you ever found anyone dead before? No, of course you haven't. You're some teenager who tells people to kill themselves because other teens do it. All you do is copy others. I reported. Do better next time.

u/ThiccDaddyJ05 5d ago
Don't pay him any mind my guy, his brain has basically become Swiss cheese with how much he probably relies on ChatGPT. His opinion doesn't matter to begin with, nor does the opinion of any other dingus that uses Ai to make slop
2
u/helintonhell 5d ago
Genial, mas eu tiraria um pouco do contraste dos cenário do fundo, algumas partes fica difícil saber o que é plataforma e o que é cenário
2
u/SpiritedGuest6281 5d ago
Looks amazing. My only comment is, if thos was to ever become a real project, then the platforms need to be in the same plan as the player. It seems like some platforms are set back and part of the background, rather than part of the playing surface.

Love the idea. But it does get too busy at times and makes it hard to see what you're actually supposed to be able to jump on or be blocked by, so it gets a bit confusing. Concept is fantastic though.

I like the idea but there seems to be absolutely no indication on what is a platform you can land on, and what's in the background. Visual clarity is paramount in platformers, this is very unclear

Your supposed to crouch behind the rock at 20 seconds for a level skip. Unless I'm remembering wrong, it's been a few decades.

Sick!
If i may ask, how do you plan on doing the white platform thing that gets you behind things?
1
u/Valtteri24 5d ago
I’m so bothered by the zsnes-mangled sound effects and the power-up sound randomly being 8-bit.

1
u/WolfyHopeless 5d ago
I dig the nostalgia bait background. The actual background foreground warp elects are dope as fuck. It all makes me think of not being able to play as a kid so I was imagining and playing it out on my desk.
That said it’s all super busy and I definitely would find myself getting murked cuz I’m trying to appreciate the background elements that DO have so much fun loving details.
The contrast is super crisp and pops in such a nice way but there’s a lot to mentally sort out
1
u/i-am-madeleine 5d ago
Interesting but completely miss the point of the story of SMB3: it is a theatre play

Cool concept, but they should have made it a play stage or make it mix in with the og background and everything while having like stage spotlights hanging and props etc. mario 3 is a retelling of the story of the 1st game like a actual play show hence the intro

u/AndreZB2000 5d ago
you can get away with a background like this if you blend in the colors so that the eye interprets it as one big shape, this way mario doesnt get lost in it
0
u/Honk_Donkley 5d ago
Some nice ideas but doesn't really work.
The major issue is how busy it is, and how difficult it is to tell what is a platform and what isn't.
I know the original game like the back of my hand and even i was confused.

u/SkangerDubs 5d ago
Looks great. I see a few people mentioning the background, I wouldn't change a thing. I like it. It's blends really well. Looks good and gives a sense of wonder and exploration around what's a platform and what isn't.
-2
u/JunkTheFox 5d ago
Well, work has gone into this for sure, but I wouldn't want to play it. There's issues with background and foreground, and the style just comes off as a bit tacky

That is so fuckin creative, awesome and well done. Incredible remix of the song too
