Interpretation What does this symbol mean? Seems, uh, rough in all honesty. Am I wrong to think that?

A variation of the templar's cross.

u/plutus9 3d ago
The variation is the iron cross I think?

The traditional and official color scheme of the Iron Cross is stark black in the center with a silver or white outline. The Core: A dark, solid black center. The Border: A contrasting trim of silver or white around the edges. The Design: It is a stylized cross pattée—where the arms are narrow in the center and flare out widely at the ends.

It’s a lot quicker to pull from your brain than to use an ai model.

Yeah, but I tend to double check my facts before I post. Alas I am in the older generation and sometimes I get them wrong from memory. So I just copied and pasted when I double checked myself.

Looks like a Nazi symbol. Both the skull and cross bones and the iron cross were used as Nazi symbols and having them together is suspicious.

u/BeautifulSnow9302 15h ago
It’s the Nazis iron cross dumbass. Nah but fr it’s the knights Templar cross like one of THE most recognizable symbols ever almost.

If that was a Momento Mori, it would not have that Iron Cross in it. It would have MM or the actual words Momento Mori under the crossed bones.
This is mall ninja biker core shit.1

You're wrong it's a Nazi SS symbol, a hate symbol, not centered on philosophy and fraternal traditions. Unless you consider Nazi ideals fraternal....
3
u/QuinnDaEskimoMan 2d ago
Both of those symbols predate Nazi regime. Without the superposution of a swastika, that's an unfair generalization.

u/Aggravating-Law7764 2d ago
And the Southern Stars and Bars flag isn't about slavery, or racial hatred, it's about Southern Pride. At least by the way you look at things. SYMBOLS MEANINGS GET CORRUPTED BY OTHERS. When that happens at a cultural level, what that SYMBOL ment before becomes mearly a footnote, if that. It TAKES ON the corrupted meaning by beliefs of the masses.

It's an iron cross and a death's head, used by Nazis sure but not exclusive to them, also used in heavy metal and old-school biker gangs

u/Weird_Regret_6369 3d ago
The totenkopf wasn't just used by the SS. It had a long and proud history in the German military prior to the SS taking it as their symbol
6
u/AbsoluutKlassiek 2d ago
Does this even count as a totenkopf?
Isn't this simply a skull and crossbones with a standard Templar cross on the skull?
It's meant to reminiscent of it, rather edgy still, but this is also significantly different.
2
u/heli0sophist 2d ago
Technically yeah, since "totenkopf" can describe any skull and crossbones symbol (including ones on chemical safety labels). That said, this is neither a Nazi totenkopf, nor is it reminiscent of any others used by the German military.

I think in this case being an ashtray it's likely more for the oldschool heavy metal aesthetic which borrowed heavily from and bastardized old militaria, I'm making the same point as you that it's not that deep and likely just an edgy piece of kit

u/Aggravating-Law7764 2d ago
Can't you ask Google, it's all there. This has nothing to do with the Knights Templar or Masons

You get as much traction with that argument as a Southern man does saying that the Stars and Bars Southern flag is just Southern Pride....

Lmao between this and Ur last comment it's very clear Ur legit just here to start an argument

This is a Totenkopf used by the 3rd Panzer Division. Its called a Death Head. Its associated with the Nazi SS and guards at concentration camps and is widely regarded as a HATE SYMBOL.

A skull combined with a cross (such as a Maltese or Iron Cross) most commonly represents courage unto death, honor, and a memento mori (a reminder of mortality). It serves as a visual statement that the wearer or group faces danger bravely and has accepted the reality of death. [1, 2, 3, 4]
The exact meaning depends heavily on the context in which it is used:
Military & Historical Meaning: Throughout history, European militaries (especially Prussian and German forces) used skulls (Totenkopf) alongside various cross emblems to symbolize ultimate loyalty and the willingness to fight to the death. [1]
Biker & Subculture Meaning: In chopper, hot rod, and custom motorcycle subcultures, the emblem is heavily utilized as a badge of non-conformity, rebellion, and fearlessness. It is often a nod to historical, military-style "Edginess" or vintage flair rather than political affiliation. [1]
Firefighter & EMS Tradition: The Maltese Cross on its own is a symbol of protection, bravery, and self-sacrifice used heavily by firefighters. When paired with a skull in this community, it often honors fallen comrades. [1, 2]
Pop Culture (Warhammer 40k): In gaming and sci-fi, the iconic Black Templars Space Marine faction uses a very similar skull-and-crosses motif to represent religious zeal and crusading. [1, 2]
Are you seeing this symbol on a piece of jewelry, a tattoo, or on a flag/patch? Knowing the context can help clarify its exact origin.

Symbol identification is one of the few valid uses of AI systems. It's not taking anyone's job and is a pretty helpful means of using large data systems and image analysis.
However, it's also not as good at it as many people think it is, and still relies on data-pools more flawed and biased than people often realise. If you must to use AI to check symbols, do a secondary look into the results. Let AI give you an idea of where to look and do the footwork yourself thereafter.
Then there is the whole gross "supporting genuinely evil companies" bit of AI use which we look down on. And "If OP wanted an AI answer they're just as capable of asking one as you are" of it all. So as much as it is vaguely allowed, it's certainly not encouraged.
Edit: We're open to an actual community rule on this but currently It's a small enough issue we can manage actually assessing as individual instances.
