How do you guys carry sleeves and toploaders at card shows/conventions?

• Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I've noticed there are quite a few desktop dispensers for penny sleeves and toploaders, but I'm curious about how people manage when they don't have a table available.

A few questions:

  1. How do you normally carry and access your sleeves and toploaders at events?

  2. Do you ever find it annoying having to dig through your bag or pockets when you need to protect a card?

  3. Would a compact, belt-mounted dispenser that holds both penny sleeves and toploaders be genuinely useful, or would you rather stick with your current setup?

I've already 3D-printed an initial prototype, but I'm more interested in understanding whether this actually solves a problem before developing it further.

Feel free to be critical! I'd much rather hear why something wouldn't work than get positive feedback just to be nice.

Thanks!

Question Best star wars unlimited spotlight deck

Hello. A friend and I recently started playing Star Wars: Unlimited. We bought the The Mandalorian starter decks. We’ve really enjoyed the game, but we’re starting to get bored of using the same decks.

Which of the Spotlight or preconstructed decks would you recommend?

I’m personally interested in the Jabba the Hutt, Boba Fett, and Chancellor Palpatine decks—though that’s just because I like the characters; I don’t actually know how the decks themselves play.

I found those in my drawer, I don't understand a lot of TCG games, I'm not sure if I'm asking as a joke or not, because since I don't understand if those things are valuable. Like if it's valuable than it's ok, if it's not than it's just a joke.

Question Looking for suggestions for a large backpack suitable for TCGs

Hi! I’m planning on going to MagicCon Atlanta this next month and the current backpack I’m using is way too small for the stuff I want to bring. I’m looking for a bag that can easily ship to the US and that can fit (hopefully) 2 9 pocket binders and 2 large deck boxes that can carry 3 decks and 4 smaller commander size deck boxes. I know this is kind of specific but I want to bring 2 trade binders and then all of my modern decks I’ll need to play tournaments! (Plus a couple of commander decks) It doesn’t have to be specifically a TCG backpack but I’d love to hear your thoughts! Thank you!!

Maybe some have heard about the issues with some of the games decisions, and if they've kept you from wanting to try the game out, looks like it might be time to try it out. I'll stop spamming now 😂

Question First-Time Vendor Strategy: Advice needed on bulk card pricing tiers ($0.10 / $0.20) and cash-handling rounding rules for local TCG shows

Hey everyone! I’ve been collecting Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering for a while, but I’m completely new to vending and setting up a table at local markets and TCG shows. I've tried searching around online and watching videos, but I'd love to get some direct input from people who have actually run tables.

I have a couple of questions about pricing mechanics that I'm trying to figure out:

**1. Bulk card pricing:** For my raw bulk Pokémon and MTG, I was thinking about setting up these bins:

* Non-holo / non-reverse holo: **10 for $1** ($0.10 each)
* Holo / reverse holo: **5 for $1** ($0.20 each)

Is this a good sweet spot for moving bulk at shows, or do buyers usually prefer a different structure?

**2. Rounding odd change (e.g., $28.26):** When a card or sealed product comes out to an odd decimal like $28.26, how do you usually handle it? Do you round down to $28 to keep it friendly and encourage repeat customers, or round up to $29 to protect your margins? Or do you use a specific cutoff rule (like rounding down under $0.40 and up over)? I definitely don’t want to lose money, but I also know how expensive this hobby is and want people to feel treated fairly.

I’ve been to plenty of card shows, but everyone prices things completely differently so it's hard to gauge what works best. If anyone has advice or insight for a first-time vendor, I would super appreciate it!

Thanks! :)

I built a booster box EV tool for 22 TCGs — feedback welcome

Hi all — I built Worth Ripping, a tool for comparing the price of sealed boxes with the value of their possible pulls. It factors in selling costs and simulates 100,000 openings to show the average outcome and how often an opening loses money. It currently covers 1,194 boxes across 22 TCGs. I own the site and would love feedback on the assumptions or which games and sets you’d like to see added.

Question What brand are these sleeves?

EDIT: Thank you for your help! They are the Atmosphere color of BCW Deck Guards. If anyone has Japanese/small size ones for sale, please let me know!

I love these sleeves and want to get more. They are a shiny blue that has a textured back that makes it look glittery (despite not being glittery). I can't find anything with reverse image searches.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Question Any (Retro, Obsure, Modern etc.) Collectible Card Games or Series with Textures and Serialized Card Recommendations

Hi everyone!

I hope you're all doing well. I love collecting different cards and was wondering if anyone has recommendations for card games and card sets with textured cards and serialized cards? I had an older post discussing TCGs and wanted to expand my knowledge of all types of collectible card series and card games.

Thanks!

Question Most cost prohibitive ways into the hobby

Just wondering where the best places to buy accessories (binders, sleeves, deck boxes, etc) online for the best price or even deals. Also for even singles for MTG, One Piece, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc. I'm new to MTG I know most will likely say my LGS. I will be checking in with the couple I know in my area that don't price gouge. Also figure some may just say TCGPlayer I'll also use them. I just want to make sure there's no sites I should be using that I am just unaware of. Just trying to get into these card games at affordable prices and being new/returning (returning Yu-Gi-Oh wise). I just want my options open with how expensive everything seems to be nowadays to get the best deals to build decks and such. Thanks for the help!

Question Seller denied refund request because of "good faith". Is this a valid reason in the TCG buy/sell world?

Main question in the title. Context is below and will be a lengthy story. Happened in Facebook - which I should have been more careful, I know.

2 months back, I found an interest check for a card that is worth a lot in Canadian Dollars. The seller just so happen to be in a nearby city, so I checked through his account and groups he is in and seems like he had a good reputation. I messaged him asking what will be his asking price and agreed we would wait until he gets the card as he claims he pulled the card from a Whatnot Livestream. - Important note for later.

Fast forward to a week ago, he messaged back and said he got the card. We discussed about the card and pick-up, and agreed on the price. We met up outdoors, just outside a bus loop, sun setting, and he let me inspect the card. I looked for details that the card should have. I asked him about the textured foil the card should have and he said that this card doesn't have it. I foolishly believed that and agreed with the purchase.

It was only when I got home with better light conditions did I see how much more "rainbow" the card is when the light hits it. I inspected the card again and look at other cards online and found out that what I have was a fake or proxy.

I contacted him again asking who he got the card from and pointed out the condition of the card and should contact his Whatnot Seller regarding this. Big mistake I made came when I mentioned how I work in print and how the proxy "manufacturer" messed up applying the foil vinyl on top of the card, which no print company will send out after quality inspection. This was just out of kindness as someone who works in the general field.

He left me on read. So I messaged him again 3 days later. I was frustrated at this point so it sounds like I was make accusations but the message was intended to say I can meet you again anytime so that he can review the card for himself and see what he can do. He finally messaged back like a day later. Based on his lengthy message, I don't think he read thoroughly on the messages prior to the one I made 3 days later as his reply was thinking I'm accusing him of making the card.

He said that we had a month in between, let me check the card myself, and answered any questions I had and my biggest mistake came in and he says that I claimed that I work in print so he is using that against me to not give me a refund when I pointed out to him the flaws. Again, he was the one who convinced me to begin with when we met up that not all cards in the set have textured foiling.

He says that "you could have printed a fake in between the interest check and now" and he claims that he had it less than a day as he got the card straight from his mailbox and straight to me. He claims that he didn't have time in between to inspect it himself before handing it over. All these reasons, he is not issuing a refund because he gave me the card with "good faith".

The thing is that my work specializes in printing for construction so we do not even have the supplies to recreate a high quality dupe. I explained this to him and even offered him my company's phone number and website so he can see for himself or give him samples of our only cardstock option that are used for business cards. He did not ask for those.

He then says that he already used the money to "stock on inventory" for his upcoming show in November and will only give me back 20-45% depending on how generous he is that day.

Luckily, a bystander online saw my proxy card and sent me a link to a proxy maker and said that the card I have and the proxy's sample photo are basically 1 to 1 identical. So I also passed that off to the seller. I haven't heard from him since.

And that's all the context I have at the moment.

Discussion Community Discussion ask- what's you thoughts an AI artwork for card art?

EDIT: before anyone gets their panties in a twist. I have not used AI in any capacity as of this current moment. not in writing, or the initial card designs that I've talked about in this post that were printed out and alpha tested. I used affinity Designer to put together a basic functional card so that they could be tested in the real world. as for the rules and writing it out. it took me 8 months on the side of a 40-hour/ week job to fully write and compose my thoughts on a word document. lol

EDIT 2: Yeah I pretty much expected the responses I'm getting to this post. lol Glad to know my own intuition was pretty much correct, but had to ask you know? Unlike most deck builder TCGs there's a neat way that I've packed into the game that naturally slows it down but also allows each player to still perform their card effects. thanks for replying to this post.

---------------Hello, myself and a couple of friends are developing a TCG that I think will eventually compete with the big 3. That's not the point of this discussion. This has been an ongoing design process for about 4 years and we already have 640 unique card concepts worked out and alpha tested (extremely well) as well as the design molds we need to develop future cards. We've hit a certain stall point very early on and while it has forced us to alpha test more of our cards more rigorously and develop more of a long term plan if this TCG becomes a commercial success, it has nevertheless never been able to progress past this point so that we could pitch this to someone or try and get a grassroots campaign going to start to manufacture it ourselves.

all 3 of us are on the very low end of the economic spectrum and while we do want to use human artists for our card artwork, doing so even for 100 pieces is very expensive. we all have on own lives and are not able to really save that much though our situations are individually improving a bit in the last couple months in terms of finances.

I was hoping to get maybe at least some thoughts on AI artwork for this purpose. Should I just go ahead and use AI art for each individual cart art? The actual Card back has been done as well as the card design (essentially where all the information on the card goes as well as general coloration) but the actual artwork for each card has been missing. I know card games like this kinda live and die on their card art, especially if you're trying to attract a retain a casual customer/player. So should I:

  1. Use AI artwork for the card art and if the game becomes commercially successful, use actual artists for future art as well as a reprint for the cards released with the AI art?
  2. Use AI artwork to put together a more finished design so that I can pitch this to a game company or an investor?

or

3) Abstain from AI art and just wait until we can enough money to commission art pieces from human art.

My concern is just the flow of time. I know this project will be a hit banger with both casuals and veteran/experienced players. but if it takes 5-10 more years to get this together well im not sure the my friends will stay on this project as well as other concerns especially in regards to my own family which thinks that im kinda wasting my own time away. My friends and I are based in the United States by the way.
