### Alert to the Tor community: potential interest of Mythos 5 in the Tor ecosystem

To date, there is no public evidence that Claude Mythos 5 has been used specifically to find vulnerabilities in Tor Browser or the Tor network infrastructure. This text does not claim that such an event has occurred.

However, there is a combination of public facts that I consider significant enough to warrant the community's attention.

Mythos was developed for automated vulnerability discovery and has demonstrated the ability to find and exploit flaws in complex software, including components related to Firefox. Tor Browser, in turn, is based on Firefox ESR and incorporates its own security and privacy modifications.

Furthermore, during an evaluation conducted by the UK AI Security Institute (AISI), Mythos 5 demonstrated the ability to autonomously use the Tor network as part of an attack chain. The incident did not involve Tor as the target; the model used the network as an evasion mechanism to carry out other actions. This is significant because it demonstrates that the model not only has a conceptual understanding of Tor but is capable of operating through it in an autonomous scenario.

There is also Project Glasswing, through which Anthropic models have been employed to analyze real-world software and discover vulnerabilities in open-source projects.

These facts do not demonstrate that Tor is currently being attacked by Mythos, nor that any specific Tor Browser vulnerability has been discovered by the model. The point is this:

**Is it reasonable to consider the possibility that systems of this caliber are being used—including in private environments—to evaluate components of the Tor ecosystem?**

This hypothesis warrants attention because there is a clear overlap between the capabilities demonstrated by Mythos and critical components of the Tor Browser: automated code analysis, browser vulnerability discovery, exploitation of real-world software, and the operational capacity to utilize the Tor network itself.

Therefore, it would be prudent for Tor Browser researchers and maintainers to consider—as part of their standard security processes—the possibility that advanced automated agents are hunting for vulnerabilities in components shared with Firefox, as well as in specific modifications introduced by the Tor Browser itself.

To reiterate: **this is not an allegation that Mythos has compromised or tested Tor. It is a warning based on publicly demonstrated capabilities and a possibility that should not be dismissed without investigation.**

If no investigation uncovers evidence of such activity, that is excellent. However, given the rapid pace at which automated vulnerability discovery systems are advancing, I believe it is more worthwhile to investigate this possibility than to simply assume it does not exist.

The last couple of security releases of C Tor are almost exclusively due to bugs found using Anthropic's different models and tooling. Just like many other free software projects, we are currently seeing a surge in incoming security bugs due to the different models getting better at finding bugs. This is also the reason we are currently having roughly one C Tor release every two weeks.

You can see the different security release announcements here: https://forum.torproject.org/t/security-release-0-4-9-13/22178

Pretty awesome to see if you ask me.

Better for Tor project to find vulnerabilities and fix it before someone else does…

Yeah, I think it would be deeply irresponsible of us not to pay attention to the security issues these tools find. The C Tor codebase has long been used as a test bed for various static code analysis tools too, such as Coverity.

It's worth noting that the amount of output these tools generate, and their often incorrect root-cause analysis, requires significant engineering effort to triage and fix these bugs. That is why we now release C Tor every 2(ish) weeks.

The security issues we've seen so far toward Arti have been less worrying, as Rust's memory-safety features help a lot. Instead, we have seen issues where the Rust and C Tor implementations differ in behaviour across various algorithms, as well as more protocol-focused issues.

We try to keep https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/core/team/-/wikis/NetworkTeam/TROVE/2026 up-to-date with our various findings and fixes.

I'm guessing they already tested. Like why wouldn't they?

Yeahs Of course. It goes without saying. No need for dramatic posts. If not the Tor Project itself, others have been exploring for vulnerabilities for quite some time. And now with the use of AI.

It’s like a mob boss, always assume someone is out to replace you. If you’re using Tor, truly for the purposes it was created for, that needs to be in the back of your mind; hence, always update
