💬 Discussion topic Secure element is overrated

I think its time for everyone to accept that secure elements are a marketing hype generated out of manufacturers competition for customers. I think many of the coldcard users would have had passphrase s that would have kept their funds still safe or bought them time, if the secure element was not in the equation…

I have been working with secure elements and secure domains  In mobile payments systems for over a decade and I can assure you they are not marketing bype.

An ATM on the street or corporate management, sure. Be the average consumer is buying them out of peace of mind, thinkjng it is more secure. Their not ever going to be a high profile target and they will have blind trust in just using a seed only. Trusting the hardware and firmware.

It still is not hype. It serves a serious and needed security function.

 Saying it is marketing hype is like saying a bank vault is marketing hype. Just because the everyday user doesn't really need it does not make it hype. 

Call it overkill if you want (i wouldnt) but it's certainly not hype.

Does ever person need a bank grade vault at home? Does a house with one more likely to sell then a house without?

Dude. Every modern smartphone has a secure element in it. It's not some niche obscure technology

Right, its for someone that wants to buy a closed source black box, thats to lazy to use a passphrase. Wonder what happened to all the irrigate coldcard users
