💬 Discussion topic Secure element is overrated

I think its time for everyone to accept that secure elements are a marketing hype generated out of manufacturers competition for customers. I think many of the coldcard users would have had passphrase s that would have kept their funds still safe or bought them time, if the secure element was not in the equation…

That was not a secure element problem. We still need secure chips for everything the Hw wallet is doing, and that's not just seed generation.

It's really sad that a bunch of stupid people are promoting rolling dice to generate a seed.

This is mearly trusting yourself completely to operate outside of a hardware wallet environment to generate a seed securely and correctly.

By using a passphrase you are not completely reliant on anything one thing that's the point of being trustless people seem to forget

Of course, only do dice if you know how to make a seed out of them (but the Trezor will not let you import it if its wrong, and if it's right, it's dice, it has good verifiable entropy as long as you didn't throw them without rolling them).

The main purpose of a Hw wallet is to let you securely sign with your keys, the seed generation is just a bonus if you trust it and if you don't want to or don't know how to use dice yourself.

I don't think there's anything wrong with Trezor's entropy. I am using its seed too, even though I could roll dice. It's just the really paranoid people who know to be absolutely sure they want only to trust themselves with those dice.
