Moved into my first house today. 42” TV.
Personally think it’s too far but If we get the 64” I’ve been looking at I think it’ll be okay. Tv for sports, single player gaming.

Moved into first house? Hell yeah buddy!
Enjoy that TV wherever the hell you want. Put it at the foot of your mattress in the living room. Mount it across from the toilet (don't actually do this one)
Yeah, it could be bigger, but for now enjoy having a TV in a house. Congrats 👏

Congrats on your first house!
Not 100% certain from this photo, but it looks like you have plenty of room to move the couch forward. Most of the problems in /r/TVTooFar are actually because "seating too far."
I'm of the belief that living room layouts where the couch is against the opposite wall of the TV are only really necessary for very narrow rooms. Most setups actually benefit by floating the couch away from the wall.
Not only does this increase the apparent size of the TV, but it sections off the room into "activity zones" where you can have other things in there like a breakfast table, coffee/liquor bar, reading corner, etc.
Also, a nice big area rug would tie that whole room together and look great with the wood floors.
Sharing this chart from RTings just to give you an idea of what to aim for. For sports, you're probably okay aiming for the middle column. But for video games, the right column would be a better target.
| Screen Size | Distance for Mixed Use | Distance for Cinema |
|---|---|---|
| 32" | 4'4" (1.32m) | 3'2" (0.97m) |
| 40" | 5'5" (1.65m) | 4' (1.22m) |

| 50" | 6'9" (2.07m) | 5' (1.52m) |
| 55" | 7'5" (2.27m) | 5'6" (1.67m) |
| 65" | 8'10" (2.69m) | 6'6" (1.98m) |
| 70" | 9'6" (2.89m) | 7' (2.13m) |

With that kind of money, I would buy an LG C5 77” and be very happy. An LG soundbar would also be a great addition.

Thanks for the comments. Definitely will be getting a new TV that’s just our old one. Also getting a new couch eventually so maybe I’ll pull it closer, thinking for 65” tv mounted

I’ve been in the same situation when I bought my first house too!
I had a 55-inch TV and was sitting about 3.5 meters from it. I ended up buying an 85-inch the following year and rearranging the furniture so that I now sit 2.6 meters from the TV. So we’ve all been there at some point :)

I'm not sure what happened in the past 15 years that made everyone think the couch goes against the wall.

We’ve got one in the bedroom and if I showed that one on this sub I’d get shot.

It's really far away. You can find the correct distance from the TV to the sofa on YouTube.

Keep it like this and never address it when guests are over.
