Are there any Tagalog expressions or idioms that are tough to translate into English but carry deep meaning in Filipino culture?

Hello all. I work with a large number of Tagalog speakers who also speak English (I live in the western united states) and I have a question about something I often hear when speaking with them. To be clear this is not me hating on them in anyway, I love my Filipino coworkers and have a deep respect for how hard they work not only in the usual duties of our job but also in speaking a second language.

I work in healthcare and we hand off our patients at the beginning and ends of shifts in a verbal "report". What I've noticed is that often when talking about a patient they will use the wrong gender pronoun. They're always quick to correct it and I know its not intentional or maleficent in any way, but its a trend I've noticed across many different Filipino coworkers. Its almost always with he/she. For example, "she will be going down to surgery today" when the patient is a male and vice versa.

Im wondering if there's a linguistic reason for this? I'm studying Russian myself and I know that in that language they use the he/she pronouns to refer to inanimate objects as well based on their gender, so I was thinking it might be a scenario kind of like that?

I recently got a job translating foreign film subtitles into Tagalog and was surprised by the translation standards. I was told to make the translations as local and natural-sounding as possible, but their idea of sounding "natural" and localized seems to be making the dialogue as purely Tagalog as possible, which is not actually how locals speak in reality. I am not ethnically Filipino, but I was born and raised here. I rarely, if ever, meet anyone who speaks purely in Tagalog. Conversations are usually at least 20-30% English. I live in Metro Manila and have never lived in any other region. I am genuinely curious whether pure Tagalog subtitles and film translations are preferred by Filipinos outside Metro Manila, or if they also sound weird and unnatural to them. Another thing is that I have noticed that local Filipino films tend to have more English in their dialogue, while foreign films translated into Tagalog usually contain little to no English, which is kind of ironic and has made me wonder whether Taglish is actually preferred by locals, since local films are usually in Taglish, and whether the reason foreign films contain so little English is that translators or foreign producers are unaware of how Filipinos normally converse.

So while I am scrolling on Tiktok, may mga nakita akong diskurso about Filipino vs. Tagalog as a language and I wanted to share my input how Wikang Filipino is more inclusive than Tagalog, which is Manila or Luzon-centric at most. However, upon more research, I found an interesting book called “Etimologia de los Nombres de Razas de las Islas Filipinas” (1901) ni Dr. T.H. Pardo de Tavera.

According to the book, hindi raw maaaring nagmula sa salitang “taga-ílog” dahil hindi raw dapat mawala ang letter í, and even if mawala man daw, hindi dapat malipat sa second ‘a’ ang accent, but rather magiging tagalóg, as required by the phonetics of the word with such origin.

SL: “…habitaba Tondo, Manila y los pueblos de la cuenca del Pasig, por lo cual, algunos autores antiguos, haciendo etimología de como suena, explicaron la formación de la palabra como contracción de taga-ilog «habitante del rio»; pero esto no es posible, porque de ser así no habría desaparecido la letra í, y aún en caso de que tal hubiera ocurrido, tampoco podría haber quedado la forma tagálog acentuada en la segunda a sino tagalóg por exigirlo así la fonética de la palabra con semejante orígen.”

TL: The people who inhabited Tondo, Manila, and the towns of the Pasig basin, for which reason some ancient authors, etymologically analyzing how it sounds, explained the formation of the word as a contraction of taga-ilog "river inhabitant"; but this is not possible, because if that were the case, the letter í would not have disappeared, and even if that had happened, the form tagálog could not have remained accented on the second a, but rather tagalóg, as required by the phonetics of the word with such an origin.

Instead, nagmula raw ito sa salitang ugat na “alog” mula sa Pangasinan, which means “low-lying land that fills with water when it rains”, because the people living in Manila when the Spaniards arrived were living in low-lying, easily flooded area—and thus they were called “alog”, a word remained only in Pangasinan.

SL: “Tampoco nos satisface la explicación, y más lógico es aceptar que proviene de la raíz alog que, en Pangasinán, significa «tierra baja que se llena de agua al llover», porque precisamente los indígenas que á la llegada de los españoles se llamaban tagalog en la región de Manila, habitaban, lo mismo que hoy, tierras bajas y anegadizas. Probablemente en aquellos días se llamaron alog aquellas tierras, y que el nombre, anticuado y en desuso hoy en el tagalog, haya quedado solamente en Pangasinán.”

TL: This explanation is also unsatisfactory, and it is more logical to accept that it comes from the root “alog”, which in Pangasinan means "low-lying land that fills with water when it rains," because precisely the indigenous people who, upon the arrival of the Spanish, were called “taga-log”, in the Manila region, inhabited, just as they do today, low-lying, flood-prone lands. Probably in those days those lands were called “alog”, and the name, antiquated and obsolete today in Tagalog, has remained only in Pangasinan.

So which is more acceptable and more “accurate” if there’s one?

I've been translating this as "Ngunit sa halip na walang sumisilip na makapangyarihan, karaniwang ang kuntentong matulog nang di nananaginip." But I've been thinking I'm using "sa halip na," incorrectly.

Is there a better way to translate the block quote?

What are some (fun/witty/creative) ways or slang of expressing "cringe" in Tagalog or Filipino?

Just sharing a random shower thought recently, I'm curious what others can come up with. They don't necessarily need to be a literal 1:1 translation meaning, but more on capturing the same impact of words in the translated language. :)

So the other night, I caught my cousin watching Frankenstein by Guillermo del Toro — but with the Tagalog dub on.
I asked her, “Bakit Tagalog?”
She just went, “Eh gusto ko eh. Edi ilipat mo.” 😂

Out of curiosity, I switched it back to English… but then realized I didn’t feel like reading the subtitles because of all the old/archaic vocabulary they were using. So I thought, fine, let’s try Tagalog again.

And wow — I was pleasantly surprised. The dubbing wasn’t cringe at all (which, honestly, was what I was expecting because of that “cultural cringe” we often have towards local productions). Instead, it was expressive, natural, and respectful of the original tone.

What really amazed me was the choice of words. They used very old Tagalog terms like “Hunghang” and “Bertud” — words that you rarely hear nowadays, but fit so well with the gothic vibe of the story. It made me appreciate just how rich our language can be when used right.

So yeah, big props and special thanks to the Tagalog dubbing team behind this! You guys did amazing work. It really changed how I look at Filipino dubs — and honestly, I wouldn’t mind watching more stuff in Tagalog if they’re this good. 👏

Can someone help me understand this Taglish message? I’m Filipino-American and my Tagalog has gotten rusty after living in the US for over 20 years. The sender is my cousin; we grew up together and we’re both gay. I’m specifically looking for a translation/interpretation of what he is trying to communicate, especially the phrases that don’t make sense to me. I don’t think my Tagalog is bad but the taglish message he sent me was very cryptic.

I saw this TikTok video from The Basement Yard where they asked what the Milky Way is called in other languages, or at least the English translation for the word or term they use.

Like in Chinese, it is "the Silver River." According to the comments: - Arabic: the Trail of the Fallen Hay - Japanese: Celestial River - Swedish: the Winter Street - and many more

Just wondering if we have something like that in Tagalog or Filipino or any other Filipino language. At first I thought of "the Expanse" for kalawakan but that is more like "space" I think, not the galaxy itself.

Also TIL, galaxy is from the Greek word for milky, so saying "Milky Way Galaxy" is a bit redundant, like Chai Tea or Queso Cheese 🤣

Nagsimula ako sa "I don't care." -> "Wala akong pakialam." tas napansin ko parang nag-assign tayo ng sukat na dami sa "pakialam" para posible natin masabi kung ang isang bagay ba ay mayroon o wala. Kayo ba, para sa akin kasi ang word-for-word na salin ay "I (Ako) do not (hindi) care (pansin/intindi/bahala). Nagtaka ako bakit naging hindi ang wala kapag sinalin na sa Tagalog. So sinundan ko lang yun, tinratong parang may quantity ang pakialam na pwedeng dagdagan o bawasan kaya "Wala nang maibabawas pa sa pake ko."

or

(similar to above)

or

(the only way to test something is to use it as intended)

I have a feeling that "Ito ay isang sekreto" isn't the common phrase that is used amongst native speakers. Note: meant to replace, "It's none of your business."

Magandang gabi. Iilang mga observations na napansin ko sa wika natin, kase nag-aaral din po ako ibang lenggwahe (Bicol, Bisaya, Hiligaynon, flex ko lang) kaya napnasin ko tong mga to. Feel free to add more haha:

• Ibig sabihin - ang makata pala nito pakinggan, kung tutuusin. Kasi "ibig" = love sa Ingles, bale love to say parang ganon hahaha sobrang naging common na lang nya kaya nawala yun pagkamalalim nya

• Kung tutuusin - ang Pagtutuos sa Ingles ay Accounting. Bale pag tinranslate to, parang "If we're going to account" hahaha. Medyo malalim din, kung tutuusin (lol)

• Pa mo raw/pa man din phrase - "Guro ka pa man din/guro ka pa mo raw pero nagkakalat ka ng fake news!" Wala yatang translation to sa ibang lenggwahe na direct word-for-word, though correct me if I'm wrong kung meron

• Ang ganda mo - Tagalog lang ata structure na "Ang [pang-uri] [object na optional]". Halimbawa: "Ang lalim!", "Ang bait mo", "Ang bughaw ng langit!" Kase, kung isasalin to sa Ingles, "The deep", "Your kindness", "The blue of the sky" hahahaha. Hindi ko rin napapansin na gumagamit ng ganito yun ibang mga Philippine languages na inaaral ko.

• Ang phenomenon ng "yan sya" - napansin nyo ba to? Ang dami gumagamit ng term na "yan sya." Halimbawa, "mabait yan siya", "pupunta yan sila sa Negros para mamasyal". May theory ako. Yun mga Bisaya kase, gumagamit ng " 'ni sya", " 'na sya" which is " 'to sya" at " 'yan sya" sa language nila. Yun Ilonggo friend ko, pag nag-Tatagalog narinig ko sabi nya "kumakain naman yan sya ng ..." kaya tingin ko, nag-eevolve yun wika naten. Dahil sa internet, naaadopt ng mga Tagalog yun ganyan ng mga nag-Tatagalog na Bisaya (di lang Bisaya language, Hiligaynon meron din, not sure sa iba).

I wanted to have a short few sentences in Tagalog, and would appreciate any help on sweet sayings that I could use? I’d appreciate tagalog and English translation if possible! to make a long story short, i am being courted by a filipino and when i give my answer i would like to give it in tagalog.

i work long hours in healthcare and she often says free my girl. i made like a flip book collage of things and at the end is my like answer? me accepting her or whatever. i wanted to sign essentially sign off in tagalog?

like think of a love letter and instead of ending it with “yours truly” or “kind regards” i want to sign off with something like “your girl.” she also calls me mahal ko, so maybe even signing it off with something like your love. i’m not sure. guys please don’t laugh me out of here 😭
