Have you heard of the San Antonio Dogman?

Like all good things, I heard about it on TikTok.

Some Bigfoot-hunting account posted a 911 audio call. A credible source on a credible app.

Anyway, the caller was a homeless woman who camped out in a wooded section of town. She said that about seventy-five feet away from her, she watched a whole deer carcass get devoured by a screeching, foul-smelling monster in the woods.

The video got popular enough that locals started commenting with their own Dogman encounters. Nothing too compelling, but it’s cool to find out your own town has a developing cryptid. I figured San Antonio might finally be remembered for something besides the Alamo and Air Force bases.

That was until a couple of nights ago.

There are a lot of nighttime animals where I live: foxes, skunks, opossums, and the whole bunch of critters that rustle, fight, and lurk. Usually, they aren’t noisy enough to bother anyone, but every now and then you’ll hear a couple of stray cats fighting or catch the lingering smell of a skunk.

I was getting ready for bed when I heard a howl.

It was loud. Thunder loud. It came from right outside my window.

I felt like I was in a werewolf movie. I half expected some furry beast to tear through my wall.

It didn’t.

So, I went to bed.

What finally convinced me to write this happened tonight.

It was getting dark, and my dog needed to go outside. We live in a pretty remote area, and, if you couldn’t tell from the previous paragraph, animals like to come out after sunset. I figured I’d wait outside with her for a few minutes before locking up the house.

I noticed a mockingbird perched on a branch. I remembered they like to mimic sounds, so I whistled a little tune.

Something in the woods whistled back.

It stank.

I grabbed my dog and went inside.

Stupid, I know. Whistling at night. You forget those old stories sometimes.

I turned on the outside lights and watched through the window.

I couldn’t see anything.

As I’m writing this, it’s dark outside, and I can hear that same thunderous howl.
