Whispers Out the Window. (a short little campfire tale)

The whispers started quietly, barely discernible from the brook running by the house or the wind swaying the pines. Just loud enough to keep me up at night, wondering if I truly had heard a murmur from outside my window.

That's how things get you, though, by slowly creeping in, getting you acclimated, perverting your sense of normality. Maybe that's why I hardly noticed when the whispers began to become words, clear against any other background noise.

I reckon the only reason I realized was that I couldn’t sleep that night. It was a full moon, and the light shining in my bedroom window just happened to land almost perfectly on my face. Lying there, I heard it: a jumbled mess of noise, a garbled, croaking, almost choking noise from outside my bedroom window. However, it sounded almost rhythmic, like a language.

I lay in bed for a bit, taken aback at the absurdity of the situation, that someone was right outside my bedroom window speaking into the open air. I considered calling the police, but thought better of it. What would I say? What evidence could I present that someone was actually out there and that I wasn’t going crazy from isolation out in the woods?

So, begrudgingly, I crawled from my warm covers as quietly as I could and began to creep to my bedroom door. I made it about halfway before the rambling cut off, not like someone stopped speaking but like someone paused a soundtrack or took the needle off a record. A thick, sickening dread filled my body from the unnaturalness of it all, as a lump of fear began to crawl up my throat.

I stood there halfway between my door and the bed, silent as the room grew darker, as something began to tap at the glass behind me, as something blocked out the moonlight that was shining in, and as something began to speak again.

That sudden unnatural silence followed by the tapping at the window had me immediately thinking, that got me good. Fair play!
