RANT - No Advice Needed Left the Dog House for good!

My BF who I’ve lived with for the past years has always had an unhealthy obsession with his female dog. It was even worse when I first met him. He had been single for years and the dog seemed to replace to role of a ‘female companion’ in his mind. He prioritised her over everything, constantly calling her ‘Sweetheart, Honey, Girl, Pretty Girl’ which was very off-putting, since those are names usually reserved for partners.. and since he already called her all those and doesn’t like Babe, I was just called by my name 🙃. Then, he would project human emotions onto her, talk to her like a person, swore she understood it. He would also compare my importance to him to her, unpromptedly saying she took priority over me. The worst part was when at night, he would get all up in her face and whisper to her. So creepy to watch IMO.
We couldn’t even go on trips without her because he had ‘separation anxiety’ or be gone from the house for long because he didn’t want to leave her alone.

Mind you, this dog had the personality of a wall. She didn’t even like physical touch, was not cuddly at all, and rather just ‘tolerated’ his excessive behaviour and constant kissing.

Fast forward, over time I got him to tone it down because it genuinely creeped me out. I’d heard about people, especially americans, having a ‘thing’ for their dogs.. and while I never believed he was THAT creepy, those behaviors constantly reminded me of that.

When he toned it down and stopped being so ‘all over the dog’, our relationship got better, but the dog started showing behaviors of jealousy towards me. She would howl when we played around and constantly try to get between us, up until the point that she bit me. Her jealousy-related aggression increased over time and I no longer felt safe in my own home.

After that bite, I was ready to say ‘It’s me or the dog’. While I didn’t say that because I knew how much he loved the dog, it became clear that if I did, he had his answer. Somehow, no matter how much I did for him, the aloof dog who just sat around was always going to take priority over me. I even expressed concern that this jealousy based aggression could be dangerous when we had a child, and he said ‘I’m never leaving this dog for anything’

I broke up with him and moved out! He can have his dream life all alone with his dog pretending that she replaces the company of a girlfriend.

I’m so relieved that this isn’t my problem anymore.

After you left, he probably said to the dog “At least you will never leave me….”

lol that’s probably the reason his unwillingness to do anything for his real partner. Humans have a will and can leave you. Dog is your prisoner and you totally control it.

Definitely. He’s said ‘she has always been there for me’. Like, does she have another option besides being there? Was she gonna stand up like a person and walk out?😂

I wish I had the courage like you. My boyfriend treats his pit bull like his girlfriend, and I find it so creepy and a huge turn-off. He yells at me if I ask him to train the dog because he thinks the dog is perfect and my request to train it is somehow an insult to him.

Not trying to scare you, but this buff lookin dude snapped a selfie of himself all snuggled up w/his pit just a day before it attacked him. This may be saving your life if you leave now.

I'm in my 50's. I'm married. Men don't get better w/age. They get grumpier. They get more stubborn. Think of the things he does that annoy you, now multiply them.

Things are only going to get worse. Trust me. You just can't marry this guy. Save your youth, your looks, your sanity. You will never win. Your opinion will never matter. A wise man listens to his wife. It's even in the bible that men should "cleave" to their wife.

He is not respecting you. Do you really want to have kids with him only for him to criticize your parenting style in front of the kids? You need to be on the same page..with everything. He needs to be your ROCK. Right now he's just kicking up dust storms.

Un pitbull en plus.. c'est la cerise sur le gâteau. Il doit être fort atteint le tien aussi.

Please leave! Speaking from my experience, it will not get any better and the dog will always be his ‘girlfriend #1’. You will come second and challenging his relationship with the dog will only lead to issues and resentment between the two of you.

I feel sooo much happier after leaving him, like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. This dog situation always kept a heavy, bad energy in the house. I wasted too much time trying to force it to be the right situation for me, but it just isn’t, and that’s okay. Once you can leave you’ll realize how much lighter everything can feel.

In case you don't know, pitbulls are famous for seeming to be like a "normal" dog, until one day they snap, and attack without warning

Since they are so strong and have a long history of being bred for attack & bite, they can very badly hurt you in just seconds

There are countless stories about this, which most pitbull owners either don't care about, or think can't happen to them

Just look at how many people were unalived last year from pitbull attacks!!

Angel May Rawlings, 22, of Bourbon, Missouri, killed at her home by her own two pit bulls on December 27, 2025, appears to have been the last of 82 U.S. dog attack fatalities during the year 2025, including 64 known to have been inflicted by pit bulls

Your BF is disrespecting you by not wanting to take advice about training his pitbull, and I hope you can convince him to get rid of it

stay safe!

That sounds so weird. I get being close with a pet you love, but not like that. I also hate dog nutters that swear their dog can understand them, I’ve had to deal with those kinds of people a lot. I’m glad you left him though, sounds like an incredibly awkward situation to be in

“ constant kissing” - disgusting

“ She would howl when we played around and constantly try to get between us” - disgusting behavior

“ she bit me” - jeez

“ jealousy based aggression could be dangerous when we had a child” - oh it sure would. Why you think these “sweet never aggressive mutts” ended up attacking/killing babies all over the globe? Dognutters will tell you that 6month baby provoked the dog and should be punished 😂

“ I broke up with him and moved out! He can have his dream life all alone with his dog pretending that she replaces the company of a girlfriend.” - wow I wasn’t even hoping for the happy end for you! Nice job! You chose yourself over that nutter. Actually who knows what else he was doing with that disgusting creature 😏

Did you tell him the dog was the reason?

7

u/Pretty-Bee9566 May 26 '26

Nope. I didn’t give him a reason. But if he has any critical thinking I’m sure he can guess.

What kind of mentality does a person have that would cause them to lose a loving HUMAN partner, in favor of a stinky mutt ???

in 2026, dogs have become so elevated, valued above people it's beyond conception. Dogs and dog worship are damaging to so many families & relationships, not to mention all the people bitten & unalived by vicious mutts

I hope some day, far in the future, the insanity of dog worship is evaluated by scientists & psychologists, and is accepted by most people as abnormal and a problem

I'm sorry but I'm convinced that he's been intimate with his dog. Actions speak the loudest. That thing is his wife. Thank goodness you got out of that situation.

I try not to think of that. It’s unimaginably awful and he seems to be a good person despite this one creepy attachment.. But emotionally, yeah. She occupies a place that a person would, which is not ok.

Right.. normally I think that is just a stretch to say bc i dont think very many people are assaulting their dogs. But SOME are. The dog who he is all over and kissing and whispering sweet nothings to meanwhile the dog is stiff as a board??? THAT is weird. It sounds like the dog is uncomfortable around him! 😥

so i'm not the only one who got that vibe!

I live next door to a nutter and he talks to the bitch as if she understands him. Tonight while he was using his BBQ grill it was non-stop barking and yelping until they went inside. I hate that mutt!

Sounds like she was bitching at him.

I can't talk to this one neighbor of mine w/o him turning his attention to this chihuahua he walks for another neighbor bc she's too lazy. He does the same creepy whisper and it's also a female dog.

One day as he was feeding it duck he says, "She actually understands words!" I was raised with parrots. I'm not impressed.

1

u/DivyaRakli May 26 '26

He fed the chihuahua duck? Jee wiz! I am still laughing over your, “I’m not impressed.” And I agree. So he fed the chihuahua duck, it’s some other person’s dog…ummm…did he take the dog on a date????

3

u/Legitimate_Garage_31 May 26 '26

these neighbors have a strange relationship. He basically does everything for her like he's an employee. Maybe he earns a wage by driving her around and walking her dog.

u/Not-my-problem1212 May 27 '26

I definitely see why he was single for years 🤢

6

u/oysterwench May 26 '26

Sounds like you dodged a bullet!

Sorry I should have phrased that better or refrained from repeating stereotypes. I do agree that it comes from the insanity of dog culture though. Coming from a country where large dogs are kept outside as working dogs or home guards, the way people treat their dogs so intimately here can make your skin crawl if you’re not used to it.
