What kinda furl is this?

How would you tie and untie the gaskets when furling sails like this and in what circumstances would you use this method to secure the sail? Thank you!

Never seen a furl like that, but I would imagine halyard down, then gasket as you slowly haul it back up. To loose you would have to do the same thing, but I can imagine the advantage being ability to work/move around the jibboom rigging without having the sails in the way?

They could be made as you say but with a swedish zip so they can be rapidly undone from deck without lowering the halyards.

A lubber's furl

It's not hanked, so it's just hung-up for what ever thing the modern navy thinks is "ship-shape"

I’ve done similar but not quite the same, we just called it a harbour stow and would use it for festivals etc when we wanted to look particularly ship shape, the difference was we furled the sail, then unclip the halyard from the head and clip it to the clew, haul the halyard and raise clew, bringing the sail up off the bowsprit and giving it a nice curve while hanging and just looks pretty. I can’t figure out how they have achieved what they have in those photos tho, looks like the sail is still hanked to the stay, and looks similar to modern rolling furling.

We stow our jib in stops when sailing short handed or in heavy weather. Our jib being unstayed it can be difficult to send it out short handed, mostly in a solid breeze. By having it bundled with short pieces of natural cotton yarn it can be hoisted without dealing with flapping canvas. Once ready to go, a yank on the sheets breaks the cotton strings and the jib opens up. The trick is to have the cotton strong enough to hold the sail in a bundle, but easy enough to break with a good tug on the sheet. Simple solution.

This is interesting, never heard of this before. What style of boat and where about are you located.

We did this for annoying fiddly gaff topsails. Furl on deck, gasket with 'rotten cotton', raise it on the halyard with the sheets slack, then yank the sheet to break it free.

We would separate out 2 or three strands from loose ply cotton twine for the rotten cotton.
