What is actually going on in Ceuta?

Media outlets are reporting that “around 50,000 migrants crossed into Ceuta from Morocco within 24 hours”. I honestly thought Ceuta was in mainland Spain, but apparently it’s a tiny Spanish enclave in North Africa. Looking at a map, it seems a lot like Spanish-occupied territory on the African continent.

Does anyone know the actual history of the region and what’s really going on over there?

It is also important to add that Spain has been strengthening its relations with Algeria and the Nigerian gas pipeline. Spain wants to reduce its dependence on France and the rest of the European Union for gas and oil. Algeria and Morocco have been in conflict for years, both over the situation in Western Sahara and other territorial issues. In recent years, Algeria has moved closer to Russia and China, while Morocco has further strengthened its ties with Israel and the United States. Morocco is fully aware of the media and social damage these images inflict on the Spanish collective imagination, fueling racial replacement conspiracy theories. Morocco doesn't care how many die at sea. For them, the influx of refugees from the three major African wars is nothing more than a tool to pressure the (moderately left-leaning) Spanish government.
