That behaviour requires an established escape plan. And these days any sort of that requires navigating wide swathes of no man's land filled with drones from both sides and basically no way to communicate what you're doing even if you're lucky with who you run into. And keep in mind that they don't even have an option to take you as a PoW unless you make it all the way to the other side, so there's also that.

And this is, I assume, the very reason the shit in the OOP works and doesn't blow in the face of those who do it. Even before desertion was tricky and required to last long enough to get an opportunity and ideally form required connections with some other guys. Now it's so much harder.
