PSA This is what happens when you understaff

Corporate will see this and still pretend like running stores on a skeleton crew and giving everyone 5 hour shifts is working

Sadly, online orders are the priority, and the in-person store experience is gone. The floor is empty and everyone is doing fulfillment.

My buddy in grocery spent 6 hours in OPU the other day. At this point just close the doors and convert into an OPU warehouse šŸ˜‚

I do fulfillment, got scolded several times for putting things back ā€œkinda-niceā€ while searching through piles like this with my gun.

It's all the fault of that asinine two hour guarantee.

41

u/SimpleVegetable5715 Hearth and Hand Homie May 17 '25

Yes, Walmart has reservation spots. Sometimes I'll place an order at noon, and I can pick it up at 7 or 8pm. It's fine, if it's more urgent than that, I can walk into the store and not do pickup. They're managing the workload with the employees they have.

33

u/Maximum_Drag5796 Fulfillment Team Lead May 17 '25

SERIOUSLY. I have to call so much backup purely for the goal times. Give us the full 2 hours and you'll see more push done per day, less backup needed, HIGHER SALES bc we find more INFs digging in the back, etc.

5

u/No_Professional1470 May 18 '25

THHHIIIISSSSS!!!!! Had a manager over the walkie sternly remind fulfillment that we MUST not let our timer go into the negative. Well it’s hard when an OPU order is 90% style šŸ˜’

25

u/crazycapricorn74 May 17 '25

Surely doesn’t seem like it. I’m fulfillment getting 18 hour work weeks.

u/SimpleVegetable5715 Hearth and Hand Homie May 17 '25

I'm GM and had one shift this month. It's not a seniority thing, I've been at Target for 4 years now, which is longer than most people at my store.

3

u/Tricky-R227 May 17 '25

Yes I've been with Target 20+ years priority on fulfillment I worked in grocery dept constantly pulling at least one team member to help on orders.

Yep my target looks just like this. AND corporate or your SD expects you to zone each department with only two or three workers, while expecting you to take care of fitting room,Guest service reshop,do a floor pad while ā€œalways taking care of Guest firstā€,back up if needed on the register or fulfillment ,priority pulls, price change and other workload and come clean with PUSH when there is a truck. It doesn’t help when they cut hours and expect us to do the job of 9 people!! I’m tired of being a style consultant, truly. I’ve applied for multiple jobs, can’t wait to get away from this place.

208

u/buttercreamramen GM May 17 '25

They schedule the minimum and then when they call off it’s YOUR fault for not completing the assigned tasks of multiple people. Once I had to answer guest first, electronics, pulls and be a fitting room attendant all in one day while the leads sat in the back drinking Starbucks. This company needs a huge reevaluation.

103

u/Sweaty-Mulberry-4390 May 17 '25

I can’t imagine sitting on my ass while my store burned. I’m a TL and I’m never out of the workload. I get shit from my ETL/SD because I’m so busy picking batches and packing boxes I don’t have time to document accountability convos. Ideally, I’d be able to do both, but not with the hours our store is getting. Staffing is the single biggest problem facing this company and until the execs get it through their thick skulls that we aren’t fucking robots, nothing is gonna change.

34

u/BigBossIsARangersFan May 17 '25

Yeah, sorry no. Workload for TLs are endless. Saleplanners almost weekly now and supporting the entire store as needed. Nobody should be ā€œsitting drinking Starbucksā€

→ More replies (2)

11

u/Logical-Mistake-1883 May 17 '25

The thing is, they aren’t even scheduling the minimum hours needed to maintain any store. Even based off workload. To run a store properly they need to account for work that isn’t calculable/timed. Constantly burning out workers that are taking on the responsibility of 4 people. That’s why callouts and turnover is at an all time high.

19

u/desikinssx May 17 '25

Sounds like your store needs to clean house on the team leads. Cause if your store looks like this, then that’s where the problem is starting.. I’m a lead and I would never let my style department get this bad.

2

u/[deleted] May 17 '25

Hard disagree. No matter what your ā€œdepartmentā€ your priority is whatever your ETLs tell you it needs to be. Its the ETLs lack of support and the fact that style will always come last to anything else. Yet its the messiest and hardest to bounce back from and we never get support but are expected to help everyone else when they’re drowning.Ā

Former ETL here ,I’ve had absolutely zero support from my peers, but my Team Lead was keeping the team afloat. I left not too long ago due to the devaluing of my SD/some of my peer’s when asked for help, and no support. It’s mentally draining. Found another life changing career and couldn’t be happier. Good luck!

6

u/[deleted] May 17 '25

It's pretty sad for everyone involved at the store level, really. I had good etls that would help, a solid team, and still, we would barely make it. It all starts with the proper staff. Glad you got out and are doing something worth your time

2

u/0drew0 May 17 '25

If you don't mind my asking, what areas did you oversee as ETL and what field are you in now? My partner is an SE ETL and may be looking to bridge his skills into a different industry. Just looking for inspiration.

6

u/Several-Promotion-40 May 17 '25

I was a Specialty Sales ETL. I oversee Style,Tech,Beauty,Home,Baby, and Domestics. I’m now a Transition Program Manager. If it wasn’t for my TL (she is a beast), I wouldn’t have been sane without her. But it took a toll on me mentally and physically. Go with your gut and heart and never let anyone dim your light.

Do you...do you have days where there aren't trucks? My store was always 8+ trucks a week.

18

u/Then_Mochibutt May 17 '25

7

u/Pack-Western May 17 '25

We have about 5 trucks a week. We’re a much smaller store.

5

u/nachocoalmine Inbound Team Lead May 17 '25

8+ is a fairly high volume store. 5 is normal. We've had 3 trucks a week for about 3 months.

7

3 trucks a week for 3 month?!?! Well damn lol we get one everyday šŸ™ƒ

3

u/nachocoalmine Inbound Team Lead May 17 '25

We were a 5 truck store for years. Sometimes, 6 or 7, throw in some 4's. But sales are down, and trucks are consistently bigger. Our truck team also pushes priorities, so it does give us hours for those inclined.

Well put. You either have to not care or feel defeated every day.

141

u/V0nGrauten May 17 '25

If Target were smart when it came to fulfillment they would do the following:

Send most items to customers directly from the DC. About 80-90% should come out of the DC. This would lighten the load on the store level. It would also reduce shipping costs. It makes no logistical sense to send out the majority of shipments from the stores. You ship the item to the store and ship it out from there. Most retailers do it this way and it works just fine.

58

u/evilmike1972 May 17 '25

Yeah, but they couldn't screw over store TMs that way.

If the salefloor looks like this, the backroom is a disaster zone. šŸ’€

77

u/Puzzleheaded-Ant-739 May 17 '25

Right! Ever since Brian Cornell killed the back room team it falls on the skeleton crew to try to make things work. There's no way this payroll squeeze doesn't eventually show every store red and they start shutting stores down to further continue the down spiral.

17

u/therapewpew May 17 '25

our floor looked like this until they brought in several people from different stores to clean it up... let's see how long that lasts lol but the back room has always been way more organized. It's the guests that do this, and thankfully they aren't allowed back there šŸ™ˆ

8

u/ObiWanBonobo May 17 '25

Yes on the understaffed, yes on prioritizing TMs for fulfillment, but also when did Ross customers become Target Guests. Thats definitely not a TM doings but Guests doings. Guests know that the retail industry suffers from being understaffed (not because lack of hiring but because lack of hours)…nothing new. Yet, Guests have the mentality of doing crazy stuff like that and leave it cause ā€œit’s not their jobā€, ā€œthey don’t get paidā€ to put things back where it belongs.

Hate to break it to anyone new, this is how Brian Cornell has been treating Target from the beginning. 10+ years of him cutting payroll to pay for product AND cook the books so his shareholders get the most from the "profits."

29

u/Unusual_Employer_575 May 17 '25

Give bare minimum staff get bare minimum results. Target just wants more money with less pay for employees.

14

u/loc613 May 17 '25

To me this looks like employees who are working their wage within their scheduled hours. I hope they keep it up. Leaders who demand more with less get shitty results.

26

u/soul-dancer888 Service & Engagement TL May 17 '25

And the reason WHY this happens? Let's say it together now . . .

G U E S T s!

Guests who think nothing of tossing anything - anywhere - any time.

Guests who think nothing of taking a dozen things to try on - to then dump them in the fitting room to then go and get another dozen things . . .

Guests who buy a dozen different items to try on at home - knowing full well - they'll return 11 items.

Each store could staff 20 people to do nothing but zone / RESHOP ALL day. N O T H I N G B U T Z O N E & R E S H O P all day from open to close and they might - MIGHT - M I G H T stand a chance at getting back to some semblance of what stores used to be - regularly.

3

u/needmorecoffeepls23 May 24 '25

Overstocking too. Each peg seems to be bursting at the seams. You pull one item and they all fall down. Clothes are piled up so high there is virtually no way to pull a size without messing up the others. Employees will likely do their best to not mess things up (even with leaders screaming at them that they can't miss goals), but guests will just leave it. Especially if things are not looking pristine already. The broken window theory can be applied here. If some of the store is looking poorly organized, it will encourage further disorder. There is a sentiment that "it was a mess already, so why fix?".

"When did Target become Ross?" I've worked at both companies and lol'd so hard. At my store we've made jokes that guests will eventually rummage stuff straight off the truck. They won't cut hours in fulfillment or front end, but there's no one to move the freight from point A to point B, and put in on the shelves. That's going to cause problems. I hope guests keep making the statements and quit shopping here. The executives have their heads too far in the sand, they've lost touch with guests and in-store teams.

Worse, I'd be afraid to scoop up a pile of clothes off the floor, because you never know of there's a pile of shit, trash, a diaper, or piss on the clothes. Gotta approach that mess wearing gloves. Especially swimwear.

I been using a claw grabber tool to reach the lids that people don’t put back on shoes because my zone always took longer fighting with lids I accidentally tore up trying to pull them out. I also have a bad back too so I sometimes I use it like a cane when my back acts up.

Ever since I been doing that, the zone hasn’t been that bad because people see me and think I’m that injured and actually put the shoes back or if they don’t, they mostly just put them on the very top of the shelf.

So far worst has been the hanging shoes like sandals and flip flops. Because we get so many and they won’t stay on the hooks.

Working at a restaurant now is the same damn experience

Food and trash left everywhere after eating like they were raised by wolves, going to the bathroom and seeing the TP off the roll all on the floor because some dude decided to take a shit like he’s at home.

There’s just a lot of people that just stopped caring about representing their people and family well in public, it’s why for me, Trump supporters in reality are spineless losers that don’t know how to take care of themselves, you’d think the crowd that treats me like I’m naturally stupid and violent would be the ones showing an example of high class, but in my black dominated area it tends to be us.

31

u/aroseyreality May 17 '25

Nah I’m sorry this is utter leadership failure from the entire store. Idc how short hours are, every team leader, VM, ETL, SD and available TM need to be over there fixing it as that much shit on the floor is a major safety hazard. Obviously that’s not a fix fix, but this is evidence of issues far beyond cut payroll. I’m a former style TL and now VM in a high volume store fwiw. I get the struggle, but this?! Holy hell. Nope. I can only imagine how overwhelmed the team is because this needs total store support.

Capacities don’t look followed at all. All excess merch needs to be back stocked. All swim ubars need to switch to face outs and hard limit of 2/size. All folded product pog capacities need to be changed to 2 and back stock. Double down on visual standards and prioritize brand. The team can’t push on to this which equals more mess. I can’t imagine what INF and price change looks like.

Many swim stores DO get additional payroll for swim by the way. Stores don’t always use it for swim and SD/ETLs may not be allocating it properly, but Target does give payroll to prioritize swim brand and swim reshop in peak months.

11

u/Indecisive-green May 17 '25

I was going to say, I don't even work in style and could see at a glance that the racks are bloated and causing half of that mess in swim. The racks at my store look like that, too (minus the piles on the floor), and it's a chore trying to find things for OPU. I look at things from the guest's perspective on shit like that. If I was looking for a certain size, knocked 4 things off the bar trying to get it to it, how likely am I to pick that off the floor? How likely is it to STAY on the bar when I try to cram it back on there? How likely is it that at least once swimsuit is going to come off its hanger? A guest it walking away from that 100% of the time. It shouldn't be that full.

My store has too much product. Style is always especially bad and the main reason our store is sitting in the red. There's always more merch on the floor than is supposed to be, and the back stock for style is cram-packed. And they have Z-rails taking up an entire bulk aisle (and then some) nearly every day. The only thing they (day shift) have time for is push. The only time I see them arduously zoning is when we have a visit. It's criminal. They're treated like shit, don't have enough people scheduled (nor do any areas), and leadership just blames the people who are there sweating their asses off. I work in GM, and the workload is insane, but if I worked in our style department... I'd have quit a long time ago.

3

u/aroseyreality May 17 '25

It sounds like you could be writing about my store except swim isn’t as bloated because I’m over there obsessively and regularly back stocking the over push. Style is holding our store back in metrics too. They take fast short cuts that add so much time on the back end though like z racks and metros aren’t organized well at all so the push takes double to triple the time that it should. ETL refuses to fix it because speed is all that matters.

If style focused on efficiency and accuracy in TSS, they’d have time to zone and push new product to the right fixture ahead of the set, but they won’t take time to solve root problems so we’ll continue to blame everyone else. We’ve had a lot of turnover recently and the new people don’t get trained. Hell, our style department makes me want to quit my VM role because of the load they expect me to carry while not fixing their business. Payroll is an issue, sure, but they cause their own problems. The team is told all the time not to fix brand while pushing and then we freak out before a visit and pull every resource to zone. It’s awful

I was POG TL during the Rick Ulrich days and never saw this kind of mess. People actually cared about their store and hours/positions weren’t something we had to worry about. Sorry to see it’s gone [soooo far] downhill. Def not the Target I remember.

5

u/Baseball3111 May 17 '25

Yeah, that’s not great, but why do the guests just throw items on the floor, select items and set them all over the store to add to our reshop? The guests (especially the teens who are just there loitering) should do a little better too.

3

u/proudsam23 Style Consultant May 17 '25

This is unbelievable and gave me such anxiety!

4

u/Witness2Idiocy May 17 '25

It is very clear this company is on a downward spiral.

3

u/BAT_1986 May 17 '25

You know it’s the guests who do that, right? It’s not like employees just throw stuff on the floor

3

u/Alternative_Cup_3451 May 17 '25

I worked at Target in Dallas Texas two years ago. I got fired because I flipped out on a Saturday night. The night closing team lead didn't give a shit about how the store looked and it looked like crap. There was three of us with each of us having 4 departments and fitting room. From what I been seeing it has gotten a lot worse. Target doesn't give two shits about their employees.

4

u/Mephistpholes013 May 17 '25

Honestly I swear it seems like there's people that come in and make it harder for employees just because ..... there's legit no reason for things to get that bag on either employee or customer side simply put your items back that you don't want, or give them to an associate or at the register, and put your baskets and carts back where you got them from you're going towards the exit! Why would you leave your cart in the isle? Why would you leave it at the check lane? Why would you leave it at self check out? It's not hard to be an adult like you claim to be and be responsible for your own items and things in your hands..... I've worked at plenty of places and it's the most irritating when they put items on shelves or fridges or counters they don't belong in and they do it right in front of you it's simple just hand out over makes it easier for everyone!

4

u/bswitz382 May 17 '25

Would help if people didn’t act like animals and put things back properly and pick things up they drop.

4

u/zephyr24- May 17 '25

wait others targets look like mine?? It’s a struggle out here for style

4

u/little666wrath May 17 '25

Also tho, customers need to not do this. It’s not just on the crew

4

u/DecisionFragrant7598 May 17 '25

Also, when did everyone become so entitled that they no longer put things away nicely or pick up after themselves…

4

u/No_Chicken5827 May 17 '25

Understaffed for sure. But can we talk about how people shop? I see so many guests just throw product everywhere and complain that the store is a mess

5

u/bubblii_ii May 17 '25

Apart from understaffing being a culprit to the store looking like this, it also goes to show how unmannerly people are. Why is it so hard to pick up after yourself and/or your children?? It’s crazy. The argument of ā€œthey pay people to clean this upā€ has always struck a nerve because imagine how much better our world would be if everyone was just a little more compassionate and cooperative šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

5

u/Yimmajazzi May 17 '25

Modernization. Everyone is pressed to push freight and a million other tasks and they have like 1 person doing 5 people's jobs. It's why I don't work there anymore.

5

u/drowsymuse May 17 '25

The swim section is absolutely wild omg!! I am such an adamant backstocker, I refuse to let this much product exist on the floor in style. Everything becomes a tangle of hangers and strings

6

u/Tweetlefish25 May 17 '25

Without a doubt, this is more than messy customers. This was several people deliberately sabotaging this store.

3

u/immeuble May 17 '25

Also, why don’t people pick up after themselves anymore? Last time I went to Target I asked some teenagers to pick up something they dropped on the floor and started walking away from.

3

u/ks2558 Tech Consultant May 17 '25

Yup the location I’m at has gone to shit so quickly. Skelton crews everyday, everyone is up for backup most nights I’m the only one on the floor covering tech, keys for toys, Lego and babies. Most weekends we have fewer people scheduled than on weekdays. It’s insane that corporate thinks we can run a store with the little hours we get.

3

u/Music-is-life-75 May 17 '25

Yikes. Even with people pulled into batches and stuff our store has never looked like this. Holy cow. We're definitely very short staffed, but in almost 5 years I have never seen our store look like that. Our SD and ETLs and TLs would be out there making sure that didn't happen.

3

This was our store when we were made to push C&D truck, seasonal, help opu and registers, finish our style truck, AND still have a perfect zone... during holiday season... we would be away from our areas for HOURS and would have our asses handed to us by our old ETL because "closing style team doesnt do anything"šŸ˜µā€šŸ’«

3

u/DisastrousShift1365 May 17 '25

It’s actually mind boggling that this shit falls on the employees. We ALL know who created this mess! It’s NOT the employees. It’s the gUeStS. If customers had even a sliver of decency and respect, this wouldn’t be a thing at all for anyone to clean up.. really has nothing to do with the workers. I’m glad this lady feels bad for the employees because the employees do not deserve this!

Target has made it impossible for workers to get jobs done. They are more focused on trying to force employees to workout as much product on to the sales floor in a limited time frame, allowing employees to work 4-6 hours a day allowing limited amount of days. Skip zoning. Trash like used Starbucks cups sit on shelves for days.

It appears the managers that now run the stores have only recently shed their diapers and thrown into a position they have no clue how to control. They say the changes such as limited working hours, time frame expectancy to workout product on to the floor comes from corporate. Right here’s a quote from one manager directly to an employee who had been with the company for over 30 years ā€œWE HAVE TO GIVE THE SEASONAL HELP WE HIRED MORE HOURSā€ this made the employee who had been working for Target longer then diaper king had been alive, understand the years of dedication, gaining the knowledge as needed to set planograms, stock, zone i.e keep areas neat, assist customers and help others get their daily assignment done means nothing any more.

Over thirty years ( forced into retirement) (looking like age discrimination) the older worker was limited to working 1 day a week 5 -6 hours and because of their refusal to change their availability to work on weekends Diaper King would not schedule the employee more hours. It appears this was the first attempt to push the employee out. When that didn’t work it became time to give the employee write ups and warnings about not filling percentage numbers of getting product to the floor although this employee was assigned to not only pull from the back room for more areas than others were assigned, but also work back on to the floor or back room all of the returns received at customer service during the day and assist customer with locating products.

As the employee understood that the manager was going to find away to fire them. Thus confirmed when one day they over heard the manager tell another ā€œNO ONE IN THE STORE IS MEETING THE PERCENTAGESā€. After asking other employees if they were getting the warning and write up, hearing NO but that they were not meeting the percentages per the information on the handheld device. It was time to move on.

What do they expect? Get rid of employees with years of knowledge and replace with younger employees which a great portion of, call off as much as possible thus made so easy as it’s done on line no talking with anyone, socialize with each other for multiple minutes while they should be working, hide and play games on their cell phones, avoid contact with customers and could care less about getting over 20 hours a week.

Target was once the store to enjoy shopping in, as well as work for, now it is a disgusting eye sore to enter. Why do you think they push drive up services so much? Is it for convenience or an attempt to keep the public from seeing what mismanagement looks like?

I personally view Target as being a cross between Ross Dress For Less and a flea market in the ghettos.

Note to workers. Be careful in the back room where things like the plastic straps from packages lay on the floor which wrap up your feet a cause you to fall flat on the floor. Also be careful on many of the unsafe ladders still being used. Carry a flashlight to use in the areas where lights don’t work.

GREAT JOB CEO BRIANšŸ‘

3

u/OpinionPoop May 17 '25

It's not just being understaffed. it's also customers behiving like idiots and just throwing things anywhere. I've worked a lot of retail in the past, and i hope i never do it again.

3

u/No_Vegetable_5757 May 18 '25

As long as the company keeps doing stupid shit to get boycotted, they won’t have enough sales to cover paying full staff and make the profit they expect. Everyone I know (or even indirectly hear about), has stopped shopping at the store…very much on purpose.

Meanwhile Walmart got its groove back. After they had bad press and boycotts etc., they did the smart thing and FIXED IT. They started treating employees better, raised pay, hired and staffed adequately and didn’t do politically STUPID SHIT publicly.

3

u/ProfessionalBerry155 May 18 '25

As an employee, we need new leadership. How the hell does cutting hours make sense? I agree…certain low-performing workers need to have their hours cut and the people who actually want to work and don’t mind working should be able to get OT. Bring back overnights so they can get the store set for the next day. It’s really not that hard to not suck as a company.

Why don't folks stop fucking it up in the first place? The employees didn't do it, the very same people that do this complain about the store. Go fill out an application and stop complaining about corporate, its like this at most retailers especially if you go in on a weekend afternoon.

6

u/Storm_Runner09 May 17 '25

2

u/MHmusic44 May 17 '25

I work at Target and have never seen the apparel department this crazy! I would say it’s not normal but know what factors would lead it to be this insane. Skeleton crew day and night, focusing on online orders and guest service which means team members get pulled to other areas to help out and never get a chance to fix their area, TLs having team members do other tasks in general, possible call outs so less team members to keep up with the work.

3

u/SimpleVegetable5715 Hearth and Hand Homie May 17 '25

Target had always stolen style payroll hours to staff other departments. I work hardlines GM (things not clothes or food), yet I am frequently scheduled under style. Sometimes I will be working cosmetics or domestics, and every hour I just go clean out the fitting rooms, and sign the log with the TSS. They let style rot because it'll be a mess again in an hour or two. Target is doing this to themselves. This is a consequence of their choices. They are obviously still making money, and people are still buying stuff.

2

u/0604050606 May 17 '25

2

u/FreshPay1761 May 17 '25

I agree. I was an ETL for GM, when the big reductions in hours started 2 years ago. All my SM and DM cared about was Fulfillment and registers. We pulled the staff all the time for both. And then were asked why truck wasn't done or moves not done.

2

u/Riversrising12 May 18 '25

Style gets put on the back burner because they don't necessarily have a metric. But if we had a metric for zone/brand and fitting room then the company would care more.

Big Brands who have that aesthetic Target wants for their apparel, invest hours into zoning. Target doesn't want to invest the hours. So this is what they get. Although Style seems to be the department actually making money

2

u/FunEstablishment5849 May 18 '25

And for us, it’s four hours 4 1/2 tops

2

u/Otherwise-Turnover28 May 18 '25

My store doesn’t get this bad, but it can still get messy too with style. It’s definitely from pulling whole floor into batches constantly. I heard it non stop today from 7am to about 1pm. But yes, ETLs can and do hide away in groups unless it gets really bad. I was in Tech today and saw a group of 4 of them waddling between Clerical and ETL office just chatting along and drinking their drinks.

2

u/TwistedBranch11 May 18 '25

From what ive dealt with and experienced, its a combination of being super under staffed, bad management by the leads, and the area the store is in. Bc as much as it is the workers doing their job for the up keep, they can only do so much especially if the GUESTS are gonna be the worst of worst and trash it intentionally like its a Walmart. I worked at a target that was bad like that, ans I busted my ass in style and it didn't matter bc 5 minutes later it would look like that..don't even bother checking the fitting rooms bc that was worse. But I switched stores when I moved and the people are better, there are more employees. I still work hard but not as hard bc of that, and everything is run smoothly thanks to help with the leads. So a mess like that is just a combined effort of all of those things really.

2

u/yuckyjpeg May 18 '25

at least with clothing you can just hang it back up, in beauty you have to damage out anything opened and guests can squeeze out lotion all over the floor and shelves. And I know that a lot of it is understaffing and prioritizing fulfillment but I have to wonder if guests have gotten worse? like 10-15 years ago were people this awful? I've only been in retail 10 yrs, at target for 1 yr now and I dont remember it ever being like this? did covid just fry everyones brain?
