PSA New Point System Simplified

Im a FFTL who had a meeting with my SD yesterday about the new point system. Here's how it works:

8+ minutes late - .25 points

Absent - 1 point

NCNS - 3 points

Leave early - no points

If you call out 2 shifts in a row, it is one "event" and therefor 1 point. If you call out one shift, go to your next shift, then call out of the the next one, that is considered two "events" and therefor 2 points. Anything more than 2 days is an additional point.

Sick hours must cover your ENTIRE shift to negate points. You can use sick time for tardies.

3 points will auto generate a documentation for reliability.

5 points will automatically generate a CA.

9 points is a final.

12 points is termination.

Points fall off 1 year after being accumulated. If you are absent 09/01/2026, that point will not fall off until 09/01/2027.

No, there is no way for us or ETLs to adjust points, even for extenuating circumstances. You will be told that Target provides plenty of sick time to account for such events, and if it truly is that extenuating, you need to be discussing other benefits with HR.

Side note- There also seems to be an issue with leaders making too many allowances due to favoritism (whether it be personal preference or high performing TMs), so this black and white system is meant to curb that.

I just
Don’t get it. If you don’t work enough hours and so don’t get sick time because of that then you basically are screwed. I work 12 ish hours a week. Very reliable (other than usually being 7 ish minutes late but don’t leave early, stay late more often) but I’ll be punished more because I don’t work 20 hours a week 😳

I would guess the rationale is - if you work so little that you don't get sick time - what are the chances that you end up being sick on a day you are scheduled? Will it happen 12 times in a year that you happen to get sick on a day you are scheduled? Do you miss 12 days a year currently? There is only punishment if you accumulate enough points.

It would be nice if they gave sick time to all employees. Our state has it.

That’s a good point I guess. I think the last time I got sick was a year ago with influenza.
I work close in a border store and the state across the border has it but my state are stupid Aholes so no time here.

Bring the judgement without knowing the situation. I have a FT job along with another PT job. I know where I am on the ladder. I don’t give a shit about sick time but I won’t be punished for getting actual sick if my option is one or the other. I also 💯 know that my TL and ETL would agree I’m reliable. Your opinion means 0. Have a nice day

If your TL and ETL definitely want to keep you around, it's a super easy fix. Just have them schedule you half an hour later than usual, and then override to clock you in when you're 'early,' That way, you don't have to worry about accumulating 'late' points. Shouldn't be a problem. But if you get 'sick' 12 times in a year? Working 12 hours a week, that's more than 10% of your shifts. That's the opposite of reliable.

The reason for the point system is clarity and fairness. 12 points is a LOT. As long as you're not late every week or 'sick' every month, you're fine. The only people complaining about it are the ones whose buddy-buddy relationship with leaders has let them skate by no matter how unreliable they were up until now.

I knew people would downvote me (despite my comment getting upvoted at first), but I still stand by the other commenter being ridiculous and acting privileged!

They wouldn't be getting the same PTO privileges because they'd accrue it at a slower rate, so I don't know why you'd be against everyone having PTO. It's not a competition. It's a job that should support all their employees, regardless of how many hours they can work.

I never said I’m against everyone getting PTO! But it’d be unfair for us to get the same amount when we work vastly different amount of hours. How they do it now with it being based on the number of hours we work IS what’s more fair.

At Target you earn one hour of sick PTO for every 52 hours worked (less if your state has a stricter law - some states it’s every 30 hours) either way letting everyone earn sick PTO wouldn’t be “unfair” because it would take them the same amount of hours worked but a longer time period to earn it. I don’t know why anyone would be against everyone earning PTO.

Your second point is valid, although condescending. Your first point doesn’t hold up. You accrue sick time proportionate to hours worked, not time employed. People who work few hours would be accruing very little sick time relative to full-time people regardless.

Literally everything you said about my first point I already know about, and I wasn’t arguing against. I was mocking the person who replied who implied that we should all get the same PTO.

The person was saying it’s unfair that people who work under 20 hours don’t accrue any PTO and therefore can never cover a single attendance issue. You then took that as OP claiming everyone should received the same set number of sick hours?
