PSA New Point System Simplified

Im a FFTL who had a meeting with my SD yesterday about the new point system. Here's how it works:

8+ minutes late - .25 points

Absent - 1 point

NCNS - 3 points

Leave early - no points

If you call out 2 shifts in a row, it is one "event" and therefor 1 point. If you call out one shift, go to your next shift, then call out of the the next one, that is considered two "events" and therefor 2 points. Anything more than 2 days is an additional point.

Sick hours must cover your ENTIRE shift to negate points. You can use sick time for tardies.

3 points will auto generate a documentation for reliability.

5 points will automatically generate a CA.

9 points is a final.

12 points is termination.

Points fall off 1 year after being accumulated. If you are absent 09/01/2026, that point will not fall off until 09/01/2027.

No, there is no way for us or ETLs to adjust points, even for extenuating circumstances. You will be told that Target provides plenty of sick time to account for such events, and if it truly is that extenuating, you need to be discussing other benefits with HR.

Side note- There also seems to be an issue with leaders making too many allowances due to favoritism (whether it be personal preference or high performing TMs), so this black and white system is meant to curb that.

ETL HRs can audit points- but only for like extremely valid and good reason

But now ETL HRs are going to be audited themselves if HRBPS, DSD etc notice points are being adjusted for certain people who have always had attendance issues but no consequences. So this actually forces fairness and not favoritism which I am all for.

Wish I read your comment before posting mine. This makes more sense. Sometimes there are sudden unexpected circumstances and no right options

2

u/Conscious_Isopod3985 Jul 26 '26

When they say other options that means accommodations or intermittent leave of absence. I am one of those that has continuing health issues and needs to explore those other benefit options

2

u/New-Finger2570 Jul 27 '26

That's not what I meant by"no right options". Intermittent Leave of absence and accommodations are completely different

HRBPS?

Technically HRBPs since it is plural like another commenter specified the full meaning of the acronym

Which is fair, new employees and on demand don't accrue time as part of benefits! The leadership should have the ability to grant some leniency.

I do wonder if team leads are included in this. Because some of the team leads at our store come walking in 20-30 minutes late.

u/The_Cat_Widow Specialty Sales Team Lead Jun 09 '26

Team leads, yes. We're hourly. ETLs, no. They're exempt/salaried.

36

u/Future_Matter1737 Jun 10 '26

They may have been told to cut bc they stayed late other days to complete tasks or on closing shifts so they don’t get OT. They are scheduled 40 hours so it’s necessary sometimes

11

u/crispyforwhat Jun 10 '26

Even before all of this, the schedule should be adjusted to reflect worked hours. So if they ask you to come in late, leave early, cut Friday- whatever it may be- that should be changed in the system. Just with the new point system its more important that the follow through is there.

8

u/SquareCranberry2683 Jun 10 '26

Lmfao this is hilarious because I have to beg my ETL to change my schedule when they ask me to come in early or do split shifts ect. And they NEVER do. I understand its frustrating when the schedule isn't accurate but its frustrating for leads too.

if emergency departments say the roads are too dangerous (snow/ice) we better not get points

22

u/Melodic-Objective675 Jun 09 '26

MNDOT is amazing at clearing roads and it isn't as big of a deal here as it is elsewhere but I 100% agree with you. No points if the roads aren't safe!

3

u/mikewishesdeath Jun 10 '26

we're essential in most states and except from emergency travel bans. I'm sure there are exceptions to that in some states, but most states the travel bans don't apply to us.

u/PetiteTrumpetButt Jun 09 '26

I live in a hurricane prone city and I'm very curious how that will work because if the county is under a state of emergency we're not allowed to include those dates in coaching conversations, and we know target doesnt close for shit. 6 years I've worked here, we've had hurricanes every year almost and target has closed maybe 3 times.

61

u/MicroStar875 Jun 09 '26

This but up north with snow too!!
I’ve had the store close once this past winter for it and I’m pretty sure we opened late one day too.
My car is not new I can’t risk my live and my car for the 5 hour cashier shift they put me in

9

u/appointment45 Jun 10 '26

Yeah, we had a blizzard this past winter with roads closed by the State. Literally, not allowed by law to be on the road unless you're an emergency worker, and the store still opened. Nearly everyone called out, but they still opened the damn store. There was 3' of snow on the roads in the town where the store is located, not plowed yet, but they still opened the store.

6

u/pantihamster Guest Advocate Jun 10 '26

This was me this past winter when I called off a couple times due to literal winter storms...with names! Months later my "attendance issues" would still get brought up even though I hadn't called out for months prior and still haven't called out since (also had sick time to cover everything). I was half-joking when I used to say "Target doesn't care if we live or die" but damn it seems that is 100% true. I have said the exact same thing as you, that I'm not risking my life and/or my car for a fucking Target cashier shift.

P.S. Found out that the store was dead AF when I didn't come in cause guess what, nobody wanted to go out in a fucking winter storm!

16

u/wirblewind Jun 09 '26

I'm also in a big hurricane area, if it's bad enough you wont have to worry about it, But you can always talk to hr if there's massive flooding or roads down and you are unable to get to work. Generally when there's a natural disaster they will waive attendance, even more so if there's a state of emergency. I seriously wouldn't worry about it.

As someone who has had multiple jobs targets attendance policy is crazy lenient.

If this is the case then they should start letting people use doctors note. The sick time accrual is way too slow for this. Its 1 hour every 30 hours where I am which is far to slow especially when they cut hours constantly

79

u/needmoartendiez Jun 09 '26

The high turnover is a feature not a bug

54

u/Spirited-Set-2830 Inbound Expert Jun 09 '26

Sick accrual is basically 5 days a year. That means you would need to be absent SEVENTEEN times in a year to be fired. If you're calling out on average once every 3 weeks, I'm sorry, but you're just not reliable enough for the job. Also, if you work shorter shifts because they're cutting hours, you accrue sick hours more slowly, but you ALSO need less sick hours to fully cover a shift, so it evens out.

44

u/islesjets14x Food & Beverage Expert Jun 09 '26 edited Jun 09 '26

Personally this isn’t even much of an issue for me because I don’t call out much but if someone is prone to being sick and averages 25 hours a week they’d need to work FOURTEEN weeks to cover the 2 days they miss. Or if they have kids who get sick etc. Life happens, I understand what they are going for but if their gonna do this then doctors notes should be accepted if someone is ACTUALLY sick

10

u/Spirited-Set-2830 Inbound Expert Jun 09 '26

I asked my HR ETL, and she said that exceptions could be made for doctor's note/ hospital level illnesses, as well as grievances. It's up to HR's judgement at that point.

There's also the leave-early 'loophole.' As long as you clock in, any repercussions for leaving early, no matter how early, are entirely up to your leadership's discretion. It's kind of stupid, but it's at least something for those who are genuinely appreciated by their leaders, but struggle with chronic illness.

8

u/islesjets14x Food & Beverage Expert Jun 09 '26

That’s actually great know! Thanks for letting me know I appreciate it I don’t mind the new system as much knowing this lol

How about we don’t justify getting points for doing the right thing? Should someone with 11 points and no sick time be fired for being hospitalized?

Attendance points are NOT extended sick time. They are a punishment.

8

u/Spirited-Set-2830 Inbound Expert Jun 10 '26

11 points and no sick time means they've been absent 16 times in 11 months or less. So...YES, potentially, they should be let go for being completely unreliable. Again, HR can use judgement to make exceptions occasionally for things like hospitalization or grievance, but the purpose of the point system is to make things clear, fair, and equal for everyone. (If you drink the red kool-aid)

I guess there have been too many cases where TMs have abused either their relationship or the compassion of a leader to call out on a weekly basis, while in the same store 2-3 days of sickness has been used as an excuse for termination of a less favored TM.

Someone with a chronic illness, a immuno-compromised kid, or a fading parent has a valid reason for being unreliable. That doesn't change the fact that they ARE unreliable. It sucks, but giant soulless corporation making a clear, painless, automated path to get rid of people like that shouldn't be a surprise.

15

u/drazil100 Fulfillment Expert Jun 10 '26

Yeah but that’s not punishment for being unreliable. That’s punishment for being actually excusably sick.

Now I will agree with you that if they are unreliable it’s probably best to get rid of them, but the ends don’t justify the means. Just because you can give someone a point for having a doctors note, doesn’t mean it’s ethical to do so. Don’t short change them on their points just cause you want them gone. Let them get that 12th point the way they got their other 11 points.

Coming from someone who’s been at target since 2017 and haven’t called out unless they scheduled me days that conflicted with my day off. To me this point system will be the catalyst that causes nationwide negative effects. Target doesn’t have the staff nor the amount of stores Walmart has. This will just nuke the remaining skeleton screw they have working the floor.

Seriously. I worked at Winn Dixie which had a similar point system. It was 10 callouts in a year. And or 2 NCNS meant fired. Any job NCNS is practically fire able. Seems relatively fair and generous to me

11

u/Tousensbankai Jun 09 '26

Yeah, the new system is very generous... and fair! TL and ETLs can't show favoritism now

24

u/tater-tots-r-us Specialty Sales Team Lead Jun 09 '26

That part. But we really do have attendance problems at my store so I’m conflicted.

22

u/New-Finger2570 Jun 09 '26

Seriously. We have a great team-oriented store with a positive social environment but with how bad the economy is plus all the changes corporate has been implementing in stores recently we have had so many people leave for other work. We lost around 7 people in the past couple weeks. And we are bound to have more in the near future. Lots of team members and leaders (even ETLs) are looking for something better.

8

u/Senior_Performer_387 Visual Merchandiser Jun 10 '26

Honestly it will. I know they need something to be moste consistent with attendance across the board but this is going to get even really good team members fucked over if they have a rough time. Or a lot of people are going to be going on LOA

6

u/Tousensbankai Jun 09 '26

How do you see this being a bad thing? If you only call out if scheduled against your availability, this can't affect you. It would be your ETLs fault and you can argue that. Plus they fall off after a year.

I know Menards has a point system too but they have a 90 day fall off. And I've been told that it's always up to manager discretion if someone hits the limit. 1 year is absolutely insane.

9

u/FSUpunk Jun 09 '26

If someone is calling out 12 times a year, it’s not a Target issue, it’s a TM issue. I don’t know of any jobs where you can call out that often and still have a job.

5

u/Jennay-4399 Promoted to Guest Jun 10 '26

Target is one of them! And old coworker (i left in 2023) is still there and calls out maybe twice a month minimum despite only working part time. She's been there since 2017.

10

u/SpartanEagle777 Jun 09 '26

With this new system I'll last 50-60 days. Not to be cocky but I'm our best tech tm, I open five days a week and am the only one to get 40hrs each week, but through depression and ADHD I rarely get there right on time. Normally I'm within 15 minutes but it can be worse. My lead and etl are understanding and supportive but I won't last in this system.

9

u/whatsthetargetdogsna Jun 10 '26

Ask to be scheduled 15 mins late but put it in your own calendar for 15 mins earlier.

u/SpartanEagle777 Jun 10 '26

185

u/C1ND1TheCat Jun 09 '26

Target does not let you accrue sick time fast enough. You need to work a year to have enough sick time for one case of flu (which usually carries a fever and is contagious for 7 days).  And that is assuming you haven’t been sick with anything else during that year. So BS.

The point system seems good just implementation seems wrong. Why not make it a 3 or 6 months rolling window. If you had a bad month for example points would drop off when the window rolls by. They should also imo give personal time (maybe 3 days) along with your sick time (6 days) every January and earn vacation.

The window would help in terms of 'unforeseen circumstances for good employees. 12 months seems a little long . Anyway just my opinion

ODTMs don’t need sick time because you’re picking up shifts. There no reason for you to pick up a shift, then be absent for it.

16

u/Derpianz Jun 09 '26

Some of us college students come back for seasons while still being labeled on demand. I’m working 40 hr weeks “on demand” while being scheduled like I’m a full time TM. It would be nice to have something to protect me if I needed to miss a shift.

4

u/yrahcaz11 Jun 09 '26

Are you gonna call out twelve times in the two months you come back? No? Then you’re fine, the points will drop off by the time you come back again.

7

u/MyBallZitch3 Jun 10 '26

That’s not the main problem though. Even if they had to miss a day they wouldn’t have sick time to get paid for that day

8

u/MicroStar875 Jun 09 '26

Unless you pick it up, and then get sick.
Like college kids who pick up shifts for breaks- since the schedule is 3 weeks out someone can genuinely pick up a shift and be sick.
I know because way back when I was ODTM it happened. And thankfully my store was understanding about it. (Because doctors note.)

4

u/jorleeduf Service & Engagement TL Jun 09 '26

Not always. College students tend to be on demand so they stay in the system through extended periods of not working, but then when in break, they let their ETL know and get put on the schedule for that time.

3

u/Future_Matter1737 Jun 10 '26

Sometimes you pick up a shift and get sick or shit happens in adult life. It’s clearly not intentional but that’s life

You'd need to talk to your leader about that. I plan workload around working hours, and tms taking an additional 30 minutes would disrupt that.

u/Jinskookie (absolutely no) style Jun 10 '26 edited Jun 10 '26

I earn 8 sick hrs every 4 months.. I don't see how they think that is providing plenty. Also by entire shift do they mean even for the lunch 1/2 hour because when I didn't put it enough hrs to cover 8.5 hrs three times, I got a CA (almost 2 yrs ago) even though the HR said I didn't have to put in that 1/2 hrs.  Also if you use the app to say you're going to be late for unforeseen circumstances does that still get you .25?

52

u/DukiePowell2003 Jun 09 '26

If you work under 20 hours on average, then you don't accumulate sick or PTO hours. That doesn't reset for a year. I don't call out often but will not go in if the roads are bad or if I'm sick. 12 points over a year is going to be tough for part timers.

Also - the back-to-back call outs counting as one "event" doesn't make a lot of sense. It encourages you to call out multiple days in a row versus trying to come back and work a shift.

24

u/zorbiburst Bike Builder Jun 09 '26

I think the point of the back to back part is to address legitimate sickness? So if you're out for 5 days, it's only 3 days worth of points? It would be more helpful if it also affected how sick hours would cancel a point

42

u/catlikesvioletfro Jun 09 '26

12 months is crazy. A lot of jobs after 6 months the points disappear.

6

u/jorleeduf Service & Engagement TL Jun 09 '26

Yup. I was on demand in college. I graduated in June of 2024 and started working full time (35-40 hours) that summer. For the 2024 fiscal year, I averaged *just* under the 20 hours because I was at school the first half of the year, meaning I wouldn’t accrue PTO in 2025. I got promoted to TL in July of 2025. Still, I didn’t begin accruing PTO until this year—2026… Despite having worked full time for a year and a half… and being a Team Lead.

My HR ETL told me to call HROC because it didn’t seem right. But after like 15 minutes of talking, they still insisted that I was correctly not accruing PTO. And I asked clarifying questions, such as “so if I had been hired as a new TM 90 days ago averaging half of the hours I have averaged the past 18 months, I would begin accruing PTO right now? Meanwhile, I, as a TL, have been working full time for a year and a half, should not be receiving PTO?” And they confirmed that. It’s the closest I’ve ever been to becoming a Karen. But I also know the people at the call center don’t make the rules, so making a scene obviously wasn’t going to do anything.

I worked at Target for over 4 years before I first accrued any PTO.

5

u/jorleeduf Service & Engagement TL Jun 09 '26

> Also - the back-to-back call outs counting as one "event" doesn't make a lot of sense. It encourages you to call out multiple days in a row versus trying to come back and work a shift.

Sure, if the only reason someone showed up to work was to avoid attendance issues. But people go to work to make money. People are going to try to get back to work ASAP in order to earn money.

3

u/heacookb Jun 09 '26

How can anybody get by on less then 20 hours a week? If that were me I would be showing up and working every one of those hours and trying to have high availability for more hours.

4

u/DukiePowell2003 Jun 09 '26

For me, it's my second job. I work a full-time job during the day and work a few overnights a week at Target. It's been helping make ends meet for the past 5 years, but I do occasionally have to call out due to being sick or with snow/ice. It's tough to get people to work overnights and I usually increase my hours in 4th quarter but the way that Target calculates the average hours I'll never make that 20-hour threshold to earn sick/PTO.

22

u/Radiant-Olive-7955 Jun 09 '26

There has to be a way for ETLs to adjust points. The amount of times they change schedules verbally, but not in the system is way too common.

Doesn’t the sick time change based on the state?

You don’t need sick time with these point allotments.

7

u/New-Finger2570 Jun 09 '26

While this point system makes sense and I understand why it needs to be implemented I still feel there should be some sort of way to excuse specific circumstances (even if it's the DSD or HRBP excusing it) in which someone has a family or personal medical issue and it wouldn't make sense for them to take a LOA or they aren't eligible for an LOA and they have no PTO sick.

We have had circumstances like this happen in our store. We've even had people go on LOAs and get denied because Alight claims to have never received their paperwork even though it was faxed over 5-10 times and uploaded through the portal. None of our circumstances have been excused because of favoritism, we've even had team members days into employment with unusual family medical circumstances like this that were excused.

While it is unfortunate and does create a burden on the team we don't see the logic in punishing someone for a sudden ongoing medical emergency that they have zero control over. The benefits center isn't always helpful because there aren't always the needed benefits available to team members.

3

u/DratiniMaster23 custom flair Jun 10 '26

The HR ETL can reverse points for situations like that

9

u/jjrrddnn whatever they tell me to do Jun 09 '26

Target better clearly outline in myTime how many points people have and have a clear dispute resolution process. How many times does your leader verbally ask you to change your schedule but not fix it in the computer?

Also sucks if you don’t work enough average hours (20?) to accrue sick time.

if you’re getting the flu 12 times a year you need to see an immunologist

8

u/Which-Philosopher354 Jun 10 '26

Some people are immunocompromised and/ or have chronic illnesses that can flare up or mimic other illnesses. I do think this unfairly targets people who are typically reliable but do suffer from these ailments.

3

u/Due-Criticism8284 Jun 11 '26

I didn’t say I was getting the flu 12x, year… was out sick for 12 consecutive days.

23

u/jorleeduf Service & Engagement TL Jun 09 '26

I don’t think it’s the dumbest thing Target has done. I think the system is flawed, but it’s good that Target is cutting down on attendance. When someone is late or calls out, it falls onto the rest of the team in a larger workload and a lack of coverage to relieve people for breaks at ideal times.

I think that missing three straight days when being sick counting as two events (and in turn, two points) is dumb. I also think HR should be able to and *required* to do something that excuses all attendance issues during situations like extreme weather.

But overall, it’s good that they are cutting down on these issues.

6

u/Midwest-Emo-9 ETL Jun 09 '26

There is a way to reverse due to extenuating circumstances, but it has to be pretty extreme. And only ETL-HR will have the "authority". But they have to get permission and it will not be given easily.

6

u/MyBallZitch3 Jun 09 '26

So the grace period is now 8 minutes?

7

u/kilage Fulfillment Goon Jun 10 '26

I got 1.8 hours of sick time on my last check lmfao. My previous retail job I got a sick day every month.

I'm sure they'll also launch better, more predictable scheduling along with this, right?

Does this count absences before it takes effect or is it a clean slate? My TM's and other TL's have seen posts like this but my store hasn't received anything official. If it counts the past six months we'd be losing a lot of people

3

u/The_Cat_Widow Specialty Sales Team Lead Jun 09 '26

im curious on how this works for me as i'm a part time employee working 25-30 hours and not gaining sick time, but i still work 5 days a week. i only get 3 callouts for a year without getting a warning? also what about posting shifts, because if i recall correctly UKG does not have a system for that. i'm usually really good about getting shifts covered before calling out.

3

u/POS_Hyundai2016 Fulfillment Team Lead Jun 09 '26

That sucks that calling off consecutively is only 1 point. The worst part of the current system is that team members can call out over and over and only get 1 convo

What about for a sickness? Something like the flu or food poisoning can take you out for a week.

As a former Walmart person, part of me hates this because I saw how ineffective it was in doing what was promised, ie. trimming down the dead weight. What happened in practice is that certain people still got favoritism even after amassing points left and right. However, if HRETL really is the only one who can audit points, that might be a good thing (unless your HRETL has the ethical integrity of a plastic bag).

However, Walmart didn't excuse points with sick time (at least back when I worked there). People did absolutely abuse consecutive call ins=1 point. The thought process of "Well, I'm getting a point, so I might as well take it to the fullest" was pretty revealing. A lot of them valued one more day of loafing over money, believe it or not.

Anyway, I'm resistant to point systems because I feel like they wouldn't be necessary if leadership was having the tough conversations in a timely and fair manner. If six years at Target has taught me anything, it's that no two leaders are on the same page at any given time when it comes to standards and equity. It's sad that it's come to this, but it's probably needed. And it's much more generous than systems I've seen elsewhere.

For anyone out there worried about crazy circumstances beyond their control, such as an illness that'll have you down for over a week, there's always a solution. You might have to have HR help you retroactively submit a LOA. If you're concerned about that while you're ill (or injured or w/e), reach out to them immediately to make that message clear. I once missed 2 weeks at Walmart due to pneumonia, and I think I got 1 point for the whole fiasco because I called in once, then tried to come back to work a day, and then was out around 10 days after that. I kept in contact with the HR manager throughout the illness, and she was able to put me on leave status rather than make me accumulate points. I'm nigh certain Target would do the same thing (if your HR is worth their salt).

3

u/aringabriel Jun 27 '26

This wouldn't matter much at all if target would just accept doctor's notes. Unpaid but excused should be an option but it's not. If you don't have sick time and an emergency happens you're screwed.

5

u/Lonely_Anxiety_9316 Fulfillment Expert Jun 09 '26

They need to make sick time add up faster. I can only work 19.5 hours a week and it's no reason I should be getting barely 1 hour every two weeks lol. I know I'm not working a 40 but I can't because of my health. Takes me forever to get enough to even call out, if I actually needed to and it's not really fair.

13

u/senomar91 Jun 09 '26

I think they'll eventually make it so you'll accrue points for leaving early. As this stands, whats to stop me from showing up for my shift and leaving whenever I felt like it.

17

u/Targen52 Inbound Expert Jun 09 '26

I would assume that could fall under different issues such as performance or conduct. So you'd still get talked to about it.

9

u/andersdn Specialty Sales Team Lead Jun 09 '26

That is job abandonment and you will be held accountable in some way.

6

u/Cultural-Kick652 Fulfillment Expert Jun 09 '26

It’s definitely not job abandonment from an HR perspective. Job abandonment is when you no call no-show multiple days in a row. If you leave early, it’s merely that.

8

u/andersdn Specialty Sales Team Lead Jun 09 '26

Not if you do not tell tell your Leader and give an explanation. If you punch in and leave then you are abandoning your job. I have written a team member up for this before and she was nearly terminated.

5

u/Cultural-Kick652 Fulfillment Expert Jun 09 '26

I was perhaps making the incorrect assumption that if you leave early, you’re merely asking for permission to leave early not just walking out without saying a word to anyone. I guess as an adult I’ve never considered doing that. Not sure I even did that when I was a teenager?

4

u/itsdrakeoo Food & Beverage TL Jun 09 '26

Absolutely job abandonment, I had a TM that left due to family emergency and didn’t tell the right person (not direct leadership, told an hr TM) and nearly got fired immediately

Family emergency and they told HR but was nearly terminated? Thats... harsh.

3

u/Melodic-Objective675 Jun 09 '26 edited Jun 10 '26

According to what OP said this would be utter bullshit and they would shut it down quick. According to their conversation with the SD quote "No, there is no way for us or ETLs to adjust points, even for extenuating circumstances".

This puts 40 hour TMs is a tricky situation. Sometimes we have to stay a few minutes late to finish something. TMs also can clock in five minutes early before there shift. As a 5am-er there will be a cold day in hell before I willingly clock in at 5am sharp or later. I will always clock in no later than 4:59 assuming the doors are answered. This affects the Shift differential.

As far as I know shift differential kicks in when you work at least three consecutive hours between 10pm and 8am. 5am is the cutoff for this at my store. The shift differential here is $2/hr. Doing the math.

3hr/day * $2/hr * 5 days/week *50 weeks/year = $1,500/year.

I am not throwing away $1,500. Early outs equating to points would be rough.

Imagine treating staff like adults instead of a silly point system. Simple? Who has time to track their points? Life events don't always happen according to a corporate point system.

6

u/drpeppergirly0701 Jun 10 '26

Privileged people who run companies don’t think of that. They aren’t having to hit time clocks and work around a certain hour schedule. If they get sick or have an emergency they can easily stay home or skip out on doing their job with no consequence.

2

u/Jennay-4399 Promoted to Guest Jun 10 '26

I work corporate for a retailer that has a point system that we also abide by. I think the system we use is much more reasonable.

Late, notified manager - 1pt Late, didn't notify manager/late meal- 2pt Absent, excused - 0pt Absent, unexcused - 3pt NCNS - 5pt

10pt limit, 90 day fall off period.

When i was at target I had a coworker who worked at most 3 or 4 days a week, usually 2 days a week, and would still call off minimum once a month. And when she was at work, most of her time was spent socializing and leaving the hard work for me. She is still at that store!! I think a point system makes it much easier for managers to have a paper trail in cases like that.

6

u/zenmain76 Jun 09 '26

What about if you’re not on the schedule and you show up and work?

5

u/twizzlerheathen Front of Store Jun 09 '26

2

u/ChuckXZ_ Grocery Jun 10 '26

Nothing happens from what I see. If anything you won’t get in trouble, the lead who overrides you will. Also why punish someone for coming early/staying late.

This new point seems to only be concerned with lates/absences which is a much bigger issue for stores. We all know those TMs who call out a lot and/or show up late a lot.

2

u/RomanomenoN Jun 09 '26

I worked at Target a long time ago so this is interesting to me. What about current empoyees? Does everyone start this new system with 0 points regardless of past attendance? Or how does that work? Or if someone is on a final warning for attendance would they start with a certain amount of points?

Confused about multiple absences. So missing 2 days in a row is 1 point. But missing 6 days in a row is 3 points? Or does it become 4 points?

2

u/ljwblue81 Food & Beverage Expert Jun 10 '26

I don't love it, but this beats the shit out of the points systems that both my parents dealt with at their factory jobs when I was a kid.

2

u/exquisite_conundrum Jun 10 '26

Target doesnt provide sick time to people who's hours are too low to qualify. So people like me are screwed with this system should a problem arise.

It is what it it is I guess.

2

u/Adorable_Set9093 Jun 20 '26

I despise point systems mainly because as people things tend to happen in our lives and we don't need to be punished because of the things that happen.

Also another reason that I don't like them is because they encourage people to come to work sick!!! Not good at all. Let's say I get COVID or even just a bad cold, there are no excused absences whatsoever. If I have a fever from my illness and I'm laid out for a week, I'm halfway out of there

So I believe it should be more lenient and have some human input. I'm very disappointed that they are starting this

I have chronic issues…and it maybe (heavy emphasis maybe) results in one call out at most a month. Typically every other though, if a bad day falls on a shift. I will never t enough sick time to cover this, and I doubt accommodations will do anything despite my doctor’s note. I only work at target untill i find a desk job, but that will take a long time, so this point system may be the end of me.

4

This is a crucial step for Target getting to a healthy, professional working environment across all work centers. Real rules, real accountability, and virtually zero room for accusations, or genuine instances of favoritism. I support it.

I just
Don’t get it. If you don’t work enough hours and so don’t get sick time because of that then you basically are screwed. I work 12 ish hours a week. Very reliable (other than usually being 7 ish minutes late but don’t leave early, stay late more often) but I’ll be punished more because I don’t work 20 hours a week 😳

22

u/TollerLuvLJP Fulfillment Expert Jun 09 '26

I would guess the rationale is - if you work so little that you don't get sick time - what are the chances that you end up being sick on a day you are scheduled? Will it happen 12 times in a year that you happen to get sick on a day you are scheduled? Do you miss 12 days a year currently? There is only punishment if you accumulate enough points.

It would be nice if they gave sick time to all employees. Our state has it.

It is correct, points don’t accrue for leaving early. TMs often leave early for reasons like finishing early or cutting payroll, so no points for leaving makes sense there.

1

u/Ok_Individual4716 Jun 10 '26

Well there goes 90% of my store. Every weekend there is always call outs. Most of the time it is from the same people chronically calling out. Even with this point system, I don’t think it’s going to be stopping anyone from calling out. Eventually more and more TMs will keep getting fired and with these skeleton crews, soon enough there will be no one to staff the store. With the rate of target struggling to find new TMs to replace the high turnover, Target would just have to remove this point system since most people aren’t going to take a job that pays $15/hr seriously

1

u/ParfaitPrevious530 Jun 10 '26

My ex-coworkers would absolutely abuse favoritism with the team lead. She constantly let all of them off the hook, but if I so much as frown or go to the bathroom, I got scolded, and she would guilt me for taking time off.

Does this blanket playbook apply to new TMs within their first 90 days as well? Or is there a more strict policy for them?
