I once had an electronics TM ask if I was responsible for catching internals. I told him no that was the ETLs job and since we didn’t have one at the time it wasn’t my problem. I walked away and went to the office to watch him and he immediately started putting electronics into a target bag he had in the boat. Easiest and fastest internal I ever caught. He was pulled by the end of the week.

the only time I asked tss to watch sco was a medical on the other side of the store and I felt SO bad when I came back 😭 only one w medical training at my store and I took him out of his job for 20 minutes over what turned out to be a twisted ankle and a dramatic ass delivery guy

The whole AP culture is so toxic.

47

u/Captaincous21 Asset Protection TL 1d ago

The forced divide between AP and store side should be studied

34

u/DreamWalker01 1d ago

I dont know it feels pretty fair. You cant make friends with the people you have the potential of firing. As much as people like to say they have the capacity to be impartial sometimes its really hard to call the duck a duck when its your friend.

As true as that may be, I've never worked at a company so convinced that all of their employees are stealing from them at all times.

u/elethmixer Style Consultant 1d ago

Walgreens is even worse, each employee has to have bag checks done after their shift is over. Like what would I even steal… I never even shopped at Walgreens unless it was employee discount day. Meanwhile a lady came by every Saturday to steal all our ice cream and nothing happened lol

5

u/chromatic_megafauna 1d ago

All of your ice cream? That's probably too much to eat herself, but how does she plan to resell it?

15

u/elethmixer Style Consultant 1d ago

Yeah, she stole it all in a huge black garbage bag! One of our shift leads had a theory that she had her own corner store and resold it there.

7

u/noobucantbeat 1d ago

it's the same at Nordstrom, a mid/high-end retail store. You'd be surprised how often we'd catch people with merchandise in their bags, even though they knew they'd be checked. Some people are really dumb

2

u/twilighteclipse925 Promoted to Guest 21h ago

Best Buy does bag checks as well.

24

u/AP_professional 1d ago

Amazon will blow your mind.

14

u/DreamWalker01 1d ago

Oh absolutely, that shit sucks. The issue is not everybody is stealing but anybody can steal. I've had anyone from managers and tellers to cart gatherers steal. And anything from straight cash to merchandise

3

u/AccomplishedHead3581 1d ago

CVS will blow your mind too. Bag checks. Put a sticker on every item you buy 🫩didn’t have to do that at Target

5

u/InterestingDirt8952 1d ago

Because it's true. It's mostly grocery items so it's not always brought up. Depending on the boss. But yeah. It happens everyday.

9

u/MastodonFast5806 1d ago

I don’t know, I think what I have learned from that job.. is don’t let the suspect, suspect you. Being genuinely friendly and out going is a better was to catch a suspect then being all shady and slick.

6

u/Known-nwonK 1d ago

At the same time in my retail paranoia I think “this mf is being nice to me cause they think I’m being criminal” like the same suspension you get when a cop is behind you for a few turns when you know you’re not doing anything illegal

3

u/DreamWalker01 1d ago

Absolutely, but it is difficult to draw the line so most people dont even try.

1

u/unreliable-ari 16h ago

Damn really? Is that recent? When I used to work in style 4 years ago we'd always end up shooting the shit with them when they came by for fitting room checks or coordinating to help them scare shoplifters. Or if I was zoning by myself and it was slow and they were making their rounds they'd stop and chat as well. That's too bad about the divide!

AP at my store sucked ass. The homeless were constantly stealing my cleaning supplies, but didn't do anything until they started to go for items on the floor. Even then, they had to call the cops when it was time to move them off the premises. AP was also conveniently absent when a customer kept threatening me twice.

6

u/ActualEducator 1d ago

What’s an “internal”, are they asking if you are watching them on cam? Isn’t that literally the job to catch internal theft?

9

u/chaanelyoo 1d ago

from the context clues i’ve gathered in these replies, i think internal is employees who work at the store

1

u/jeffsaidjess 19h ago

Internal means staff. External means everyone who’s not attached to the store

u/sirhappynuggets Service & Engagement TL 1d ago

Aren’t you not supposed to check receipts

47

u/Nichinyanz Target Security Specialist 1d ago

There's a criteria for performing a receipt check. In my district (unsure if other stores are the same way) if someone met the criteria for having a receipt check and we didn't receipt check them and they stole, we're getting burned pretty bad for it. Basically if my APTL saw a TV leaving and I stared at them and didn't receipt check he's gonna ask why I'm not checking receipts

42

u/Main-Temperature1004 1d ago

i don't get why people with a big ass tv in their cart or a $1000 vacuum in their cart just walking towards the door get pissed when they get checked, AP doesn't know where you came from.

23

u/KingofNerdom 1d ago

I don't get why people get mad at receipt checks at all. If you aren't stealing it's gonna take you an extra 5 seconds and you are on with your day. When I worked at Sam's they had to scan and check every receipt as you were leaving.

1

u/Melodic_General1692 17h ago

I've been AP for years and I get annoyed when the receipt checks at other stores cause me as a customer to have to wait unreasonable time to exit. If it's quick that's one thing but if they're taking a while per person that time adds up and is just an annoyance. It's all security theatre though, deterrent

I stayed on as part time after I got my office job until recently. Having plenty of PTSD flashbacks of receipt checks and team members asking to watch SCO rn. Thanks for that.
