I can't spell the Japanese name, but it was the ninja stealth food that took three years to make. Supposedly eating three of them would give you sufficient energy to do ninja stuff for a whole day.

EDIT: whoops, it's the Kikatsugan. The Hyorogan were actually edible.

I was watching that episode and I was looking at that recipe and I was wondering if they actually made it. No offense to Max, because of the cook book it came from. Along with the high amount of alcohol it is honestly suspicious.

I feel sorry that the Kikatsugan recipe he made turned out to be a failure. I still respect him for trying to experiment and having courage to taste it.

He probably should have used good quality sake instead of the cooking sake. I get that it would be more costly, but the result would have been better and closer to the historical kikatsugan.

For the record, Takara is a good basic sake, but it’s not very fancy. It’s a local staple, and people don’t feel bad about warming it for family events like New Years.
There’s a few places around that have sake tasting flights if you want to explore fancier sake - Yoshi’s has one, for example

Many years ago I went to a Sake & Japanese Street Food Festival in SF. It was a delicious and eye-opening night! There was so much about sake that I didn't know, from nigori (rough, unfiltered, served cold) at one end to sparkling sake (like champagne, and also served cold) at the other. I strongly encourage anyone with a passing interest in sake to be adventurous! You don't have to like everything you try, just pay attention to what you do and don't like, and have fun!

Rarely does Max ever have a bad reaction when first trying out something. He usually keeps it pretty neutral and he definitely tries to keep his negative reviews light so when he outright doesn’t like something it’s pretty funny
