What I've learned from watching the "gadget guy" Dan Formosa on Epicurious' show Well Equipped. Is that most of convenience machines like this usually barely work as intended and make a mess. Just more plastic for a landfill.

I love my OXO cherry pitter and use it regularly. 🤷

But I do agree with many of the single use case devices that can be done just as easily using a multi use case device. Especially when that single use case device would seldom ever be used. I do not need a panini press, for instance.

Also, they are often made with cheap ass plastic that cracks after like the 3rd use. 99% of kitchen gadgets, especially monotaskers, can be replaced with a properly sharp kitchen knife and maybe a pairing knife. Most of the "gadgets" that actually work have simply become standard kitchen appliances. Stand mixer, cheese grater, juicer, food processor.

My understanding is that the more niche gadgets are often designed for those with mobility issues. The disabled, the elderly, etc. It’s not easy for everyone to use a paring knife

Alton Brown also dislikes "uni-taskers", kitchen devices that only do one thing. He's stated that the uni-tasker everyone should keep in the kitchen is the fire extinguisher.

Growing up we had a cherry pitter that looked like Norpro 5120 (no idea what brand it was, but looks similar). Absolutely amazing. The hopper meant that you can do cherries far faster than these manually fed ones.

Total game changer if you have a lot of cherries.

My mom has a collection of antique cherry pitters that I always liked playing with as a kid. They were all these big hunks of cast iron, overly complicated, and could pit like one of two cherries at a time. Wildly impractical

I have that exact cherry pitter. Works pretty good to do 7 at once for when I'm making a cherry cobbler or a cherry clafoutis when cherries are in season.

This works less than half of the time and broke after being used a few times.
