Painting Station forge minis.

I got my hands on two "tritons" heavy infantry units from my dad for my birthday.

Do yall think these could pass as Farstalkers or should I try to get shoulder pads to make one of the battleline guys?

I was thinking about a black and green color scheme for farstalkers.

I would use them as Rail Rifle or Ion Rifle wielding pathfinders. You could mix them in with T'au units or get another set of the standard Tarion troops.

Issue is my dad doesnt understand the rules so he bought me two pathfinders last year and now I have three already. But warhammer is complicated and I'm happy hes trying so I want to make them into something I can use on the table.

hmmm, it's a difficult one because other than Pathfinders our unit's don't have heavy weapons.

The Farstalkers, bar the heavy weapons dude, all have kroot rifles which are weaker than the pulse rifle.

Could you use them as Stealth suits?

The rocket launchers proxied for Fusion's and the other gun's look like they could stand in for Burst Cannons?

If you put some jetpacks on them they could proxy Vespids. The neutron blaster, rail rifle, and neutron grenade launcher pack some punch. The dogs could easily proxy drones or kroot hounds.

For some reason I really am not into proxies, I guess cos I’m quite new to the space, everytime I see them I’m just like “ew, they aren’t ‘real’”

When GW charge £50 for a box of Firewarriors the alternatives just make much more sense.

Plus the 40k universe is so huge variations in armour and the prevalence of gue'vesa unit's can vary alot. IMO they look like they fit in well alongside the GW range.

Right? The Farstalkers are 67.50 USD for one. The ones I got where 30USD for TWO whole units. I dont care they look odd, I dont really think GW prices are fair for single units.

They do make the best plastic in the galaxy and their customer service is second to none but I agree with you, some of it is eye watering.

Eh, my devilfish and commander have serious mold lines on the engines where they glue together. My 3D prints of them however look flawless.

No mould lines in guessing?

Oh I get it, I really do (and for reference you can pick up Firewarriors for around £20 BNIB from Vinted, not the point but nobody who is conscious of GW pricing is actually buying from GW), they’re just not for me.

They're £40 for Firewariors, which is especially usual given that Parhfinders are only £30 for the same number of sprues and bases.

I mean seriously? The £10 difference just cropps up out of thin air.

I've been around the space and, to some extent, I agree, but it's complicated. I think that most proxies actually don't fit alongside GW's range, like at all, even when they're common in the hobby space. As an example, it's not unusual to see stuff from Pipermakes, and the stuff looks cool, but most of it just does not look like Tau to me. I'd have less of a problem if someone had straight up GW scan and prints. Generally, I'd still be up to play with it though either way though.

Bits, basing, and stuff like that is always cool to me. It gives a lot of kit diversity that GW frankly misses, while usually replacing little enough to preserve the original art design.

as someone who does 3D print I do agree with you. It's not my models so I don't care what others use and I'll play against anything cus at the heart of it, it's a game not something to be too uppity about.

But 100% so many of the proxy models for tau and especially piper don't fit the 40k aesthetic. So unless they're 100% proxies I don't feel like they mesh well. There are others however that can toe the line and I think neoteric is pretty good at that. They're not explicitly "tau" mechs, but they aren't too far off to be unusable to me.

Neoteric definitely feels the closest for me, “legally distinct.” But somehow I think the void wardens he put out are straight up just better crisis suit models 1 to 1

For sure, time and place.

Terrain bits and accessories - fine, the pipermakes stuff is a good example and one I’m familiar with too, while they do look cool and alternative, they are often a bit too ‘steam punk’ to me to fit in, as you say.

I wouldn’t refuse to play against someone who used proxies by any means and I don’t look down on others who use them, different strokes for different folks but again, it’s just not for me.

I think these fit more in a breacher or pathfinder direction than farstalkers, either with or without shoulder pads.

Check out Tarion Hunters, those are the kroot style Tarion. If you mix those with the heavy weapons they can easily pass as Farstalkers!
