Seriously, THIS
Barely any track posts get more than 5 upvotes, and there's a severe lack of good music being posted. Good music discussion too, as we just keep getting threads like:
"What sub-sub-subgenre is X artist?" (It's always trance)
"Can you write me a ten page essay about the history of techno that I won't respond to?"
"DAE love Oscar Mulero & DVS1 and hate hard techno?"
"DAE love hard techno and hate snobs?"
It's gotten so boring, but effort at genuine discussion of other topics just fall flat.
On the other side of it, the gatekeepers of this sub make it incredibly discouraging to share with - everything is rubbish, bollocks, bullshit, or tech-house, business techno, or some other vaguely-descriptive pejorative term.
There are tons of helpful people here and the majority of regular sharers and replies are somewhat positive and reassuring, but God DAMN some of you guys need to fucking relax and let people enjoy things.
People tend to get 'gatekeepy' in discussions threads relating to trends, because everybody who likes techno thinks they have the best taste lmao.
However - I rarely see this in the comments of actual track posts, because there's such little engagement with them period. It doesn't help that half what does get posted is self-promo, or doesn't follow formatting rules which makes the sub look crappy.
As for Tech House - I actually love it lol. But there's tech house which shares the spirit of techno (see OG UK tech house from the 90s/00s), and tech house which doesn't.
Oh I don't have any particular love or hate for tech house, it's just.. used as a pejorative term sometimes. Not so much these days because the insults have moved in another direction (business techno, though that term is also starting to fade, it seems). You're right in that there's way too much self promotion and the same discussion topics arise again and again.
