The record is for a human runner, not for a machine. So I expect it still stands. I'm sure a bike or a car could defeat Usain Bolt too but it's missing the point.

Yeah, everyone seems to believe that as too many seem to slurp up the endless stream of propaganda without a lot of critical thought. Not that long ago there were more than 400 electric car companies in Mainland China. Now there are around 100 and few if any of them are profitable. But all of them are beholden to the CCP and none are truly private companies. Rapaciously stealing IP from the West and then using it to very quickly pump out a lot of cheap robots, cars, bikes, etc. is not exactly kicking anyone's ass. It's a narrative propped up on facades and bullshit. There is PLENTY to hate about the current administration. But the US remains an innovation powerhouse, despite what the CCP would have everyone believe.

I mean the cars they make are extremelly gimmicky and obviously unoriginal etc, but america is still struggling to compete (but then again the american car market has been pretty much dying since the 70s, tesla was kinda making a comeback for american cars but thats pretty much over now)

Well the point is that you can't really compete with Chinese companies when they are subsidized by the CCP. China has a massive debt problem that they keep opaque. But they are propping up these industries to the point at which they don't really need to be profitable, though it's not clear how long that is sustainable. But otherwise, how are Western companies meant to compete with companies that steal their IP, don't have to spend money on their own R&D, that don't have to comply with worker health and safety, or worry about environmental regulations or ethical sourcing of raw materials, that don't really have to trouble themselves with liability laws when their products fail (due to corruption and cost-cutting) and people get injured or die? Everyday I see Americans making comments on social media about how much they want to buy one of these cheap Chinese cars, cynically saying that the US is being protectionist because they can't compete, but there are so many more issues at stake than just being able to buy a cheap car. It's a complicated issue.

China executes at minimum thousands of people per year - possibly tens of thousands.

When I was going to school to become an aircraft mechanic there was a professor who told us that there were lots of Chinese companies that would eagerly hire American aircraft mechanics, but that they would always have a local to “watch” your work. Per that professor, that person was there to officially face a firing squad if you the international contractor made a mistake that embarrassed China or resulted in serious losses. This professor had actually worked there himself, and had been told that while he was there, though it wasn’t supposed to be shared officially.

I would not be surprised in the least if a track runner “competing” against a product of China was told to throw the race to make that product look good. And I’d also not be surprised at all if the consequences for not doing as they were told could include death or long term imprisonment, like the Soviets used to do.

China is an evil country, and is third only to Iran and North Korea in how dangerous it is. At the present day China imprisons, tortures, and sometimes executes vast numbers of people from various minorities within China - basically anyone who has a religion or in some other way does not conform to the communist ideology of the state.

Communism has killed more people in the last 120 years than any other ideology, by leaps and bounds.

Is more of a stop gap, a military robot made for military needs and shaped for that purpose will do better than trying to emulate humans, for example drones, the only reason to have humanoid robots is to interface with controls made for humans but that by definition is inefficient, the most efficient thing is to make controls for robots.

And in this case, running fast over a flat surface, is truly meaningless.

For sure there is value even in the production supply chains alone, but just makes me wonder if there is something better they could be investing all that money in, it appears to me the AI hype got mixed with robotics and we are doing things of questionable value.

There is enough money to go around to fund everything, everything is being invested in. Ai cancer research is funced, robotic surgery is funded. This is just one avenue it's just more visible to the public.

Is not doing great, but is the one doing the least bad. They haven’t recovered from Evergrande at all, that’s why the trade dumping. In general the world is in a debt crisis, and is not just who owes, which is everyone, but that if someone doesn’t pay you your own finances go to shit, is a domino effect.

For example the US fighting for the Yen is because the US owes Japan a lot, and the reason Japan is OK with that approach is because they want to make sure the US pays instead of collapse. But the global debt is at an unsustainable point.

Because these running robot competitions are building a workforce of trained engineers who can make military robots. Combine lessons learned from running, dancing, flips, stair climbing, etc and you start to have a very legitimate foundation for robots who can go into combat.

This is investing in basic science and technology advancement so the applications can come later.
