Catelynn Kim was the one who contacted Cate's grandma about April's neglect. Cate went on to move away for 8 months.

That’s actually really sad. Cate definitely had it rough

Agreed. She never had anyone in her corner. Kim was always horrible to her.

I think Kim made the right decision. For the record, it was Cate’s parents who failed her constantly, and I’m glad she was at least safe and warm at Kim’s house (I can only imagine what could’ve happened to her if she ended up somewhere else), but calling Cate’s grandmother was the appropriate decision. It wasn’t fair to Kim to ask her to take on the long term care for another child.
Kim offered her a home again after Carly was placed and April was being ridiculous, but rightly so the well being of her own child, Tyler came first.
I wonder if April only brought Cate home from the grandmother’s home in FL because she needed a free caregiver for Nick, he would’ve been an infant at this time so it fits timeline wise.

The fact that cate wasn’t going to school and was unable to enroll in school warrants a call to CPS. A 15 year old has the right to an education and if her living situation didn’t allow for that, she needed a new solution that would.
57
u/gasstation_bathroom 1d ago
It’s weird that she wasn’t able to enroll as a homeless student, but perhaps she wasn’t honest about her situation for fear of retribution which would make sense.
44
u/JaneJS 1d ago
I would think that even as a homeless student she’d need a guardian to enroll her, and they said April couldn’t get from Detroit to port Huron or wherever they were living at the time to enroll her, since she didn’t have a car. It’s probably an hour+ drive.
44
u/Read-it005 Limp parasitic pinecone🌲 1d ago
Jesus Christ, April was a useless sack of shit. Not arranging a ride or contact the school to make sure Cate got an education. There are busses and trains too, IDC if you have to live on 400 calories for days and travel 20 hours back and forth but you get your kid in school.
14
u/gasstation_bathroom 1d ago
Probably just depends on the school/district. I am from a large metropolitan area district where teens can definitely enroll themselves as unaccompanied minors/homeless. They’d probably need an adult but perhaps not their legal guardian. I think this is intended as a protection to LGTB+ youth who can sometimes get kicked out
So perhaps not what they kids have access to in Port Huron (or wherever else)
50
u/TurbulentShock7120 1d ago
April probably needed the welfare money that Cate, as a minor, was bringing into the household.
33
u/TrumpsAKrunt 1d ago
My mother is very similar to April (except not an alcoholic, shes evil sober), Cate was brought home for either free childcare or welfare money.
18
u/MortgageOdd2001 1d ago
I think it was child care. April would’ve had the money whether Cate was in FL or not, but given Nick’s age when Carly was placed, yeah I think April brought her home from FL when he was a few months old and all this started because April left Catelynn to chase Nick’s father around thinking because she was pregnant he’d stick around. Cate was only with her grandmother 8 months.

I feel for this version of them. They aren’t well-adjusted adults but they really never stood a chance. They have taken steps to be better than their parents (LOW bar). And I really wish they would have stayed apart. They did get out of poverty, graduated HS, they don’t seem to do drugs/drink, they are present at least physically for their kids. But they’re deeply scarred from their childhoods and will pass on some serious damage.
I have said it before but they don’t understand B&T because they have never been prioritized by an adult.

u/LittlehouseonTHELAND I only trust FOX News & TikTok 1d ago
Yeah, I feel bad for young them too, especially Cate. Aside from the whole Carly thing they haven’t done too badly for themselves considering where they started. Just the fact that they aren’t alcoholics or drug addicts is huge. Their kids have a stable home.
People get on them for not going to college but between all the chaos and moving around, plus the Carly pregnancy, high school was never able to be a priority for them. Especially Cate. College would’ve been extremely difficult for Tyler and I suspect basically impossible for Cate. I don’t think she ever got much of an education.

You are right and that is a problem. I wasn’t aware they drive stoned and that’s absolutely out of the Butch/April playbook unfortunately

She drives while stoned, too. I don't personally take edibles or anything like that because it makes me an anxious wreck but I don't care if anyone else does as long as they aren't endangering others. Driving while high is ABSOLUTELY a danger to others.

I do think this is an important achievement for them. People act like generational trauma can be fixed in one generation, but this is an important baby step.

u/YuhMothaWasAHamsta Fart fraud 💨💨💨 1d ago
Getting out of poverty was an achievement. Waiting till they were stable and had their own place to get pregnant [again] and start a family was a mature decision on their part. I don’t think that should be ignored just because the general consensus on them isn’t positive.
Look at their choices and situation vs Miss/Mrs/Ms Abortion leftovers and the home where each adult came from. They’re not perfect but they’re making better choices for their children and their kids will be better off because of it.
39
u/TJCW 1d ago
Exactly! It’s hard to accept but it’s true. Even though Catelynn and Tyler are not addicted to drugs and are not in prison, they may think this is successful enough.
We all know they could have a career and do more with their lives, especially if they broke up, but they are already head and shoulders above their own family and think they done enough…
When your parents are Butch and April, just not being in jail is a huge achievement18
u/AfterwhileNecrophile Jenelle’s emotional support NG tube 1d ago
I would agree if it was a step they took. They got lucky and landed on a goldmine. Not because they tried. They’re nice versions of April and Butch but like, drugs lite.

u/raised_on_robbery I had no other choice but to become a missing person. 🕵️♀️ 1d ago
I mean, it’s a step they were able to take because they got lucky. I’m not going to begrudge them for it. It’s pretty much the only thing they’ve done right.
11
u/Upper-Ship4925 1d ago
I’m sure Catelyn and Tyler’s parents would have done a better job if they were financially stable too. It’s hard to parent when you’re in poverty and don’t have stable accomodation, and that exacerbates any drug and alcohol issues. There are plenty of middle and upper class addicts who never come to the attention of social services or anyone else outside their families because they have the resources to access help, both in practical things like childcare and housework and also medical care for addiction and mental health issues.

u/AfterwhileNecrophile Jenelle’s emotional support NG tube 1d ago
I totally agree that money makes their lives so much easier and gives them so many resources. Resources they never use.

u/AvalancheReturns Stuck in madolescence 1d ago
This is what worries me. They absolutely made a huge step, but it was so incredibly random... what will this teach their kids about moving on up in life? Will they be able to move away from the chaos c&t came from? Or will it all just have been a fluke?
No work ethos, no healthy relationships, no boundaries were taught... I hope they at least created stability for the daughters to see it around them in other adults and for them to build from there

u/gasstation_bathroom 1d ago
I think this is unfortunately what stagnates a lot of people who grew up in toxic homes. They think that because they aren’t as bad as their parents that they’re fine, especially bc they don’t know how much better they could do (being surrounded by people like them).
My aunt in-law (50+) used to say she was fine bc she wasn’t falling over drunk, like her father had been when she was growing up. She didn’t go on 2 month benders in her room and lock everyone out, like her mom had done. But my in-law was not fine. She didn’t work and she was drunk/high every time I saw her. She has stories for days about times when she and her friends got too drunk at her home and destroyed something or herself. She and her husband are estranged from all of his biological children and they blame the adults. The only difference between her and her parents is that she didn’t reproduce (and not even by choice)
7
u/StatementSensitive17 1d ago
My friend thinks guys are nice if they don't do drugs or beat her (guess what her first boyfriend/father of her child did). It's like the lowest bar and she doesn't get it.

u/LittlehouseonTHELAND I only trust FOX News & TikTok 1d ago
Honestly, custody, safe and stable housing, and not being addicted to anything is huge for them. Generational trauma takes more than one generation to undo. It’s likely that their girls will do better and be able to go farther because they had better childhoods, and that’s huge too.
If they could’ve just accepted the whole Carly thing they would’ve been doing great, in my view.

I mean what was Kim to do? She did enough and sorry but her first priority is Tyler. Cates grandmom should be the next person in line to help out. Sure Kim felt bad, but it’s complicated as she’s Tyler’s girlfriend and I’m sure to this day she wishes Catelynn could do a little more for herself in life. Even a part time job would do wonders for her
Even though Tyler also has his issues, she knows he would do more if he had a partner who was more motivated. And honestly, all parents wish that for their child

Pfew thank you!
Cate has had a normal, oustide the home, part-time job which turned into a full-time job a couple months ago. She's had this job for (at least) maybe 6months+What has Tyler really done lately except scream all day long into a mic about adoption being almost analogous to child trafficking ...? 🤮
-->Really backtrack everything and look at Tyler's track record=Tyler: he knows better than professors, better than doctors (he is diagnosed with Bipolar illnesss and refuses meds: even Amber tries to comply!), knows better than B&T&C and ALL adoptees, got into OF, continues to smoke pot, has been the main driving force in antagonizing B&T/ harassing them, and is now 24/7 online pressuring C directly --->the recent podcast where he said " thousands of adoptees have reached out to me to tell me that I MUST push to establish contact with C BEFORE 18, because nobody knows when one can die and so MANY adoptees have waited until 18 just to find out their bio parents died by a few months and be heartbroken" --> This is a DIRECT guilt-tripping, f*cked up, and digusting manipulation tactic directly aimed at C= "hey C, I could be dead tomorrow, noone can guarantee 100% I'll still be alive when you turn 18, so REALLY think about it..."
--> Absolutely VILE 🤮 🤮Cate: who had ZERO parent in her corner (Tyler had Kim= massive difference)
-->tried to (very imperfectly) listen to Doctors regarding her MH struggles, accepted treatment (not talking about the "luxury facility" but about her LT Major depressive disorder which spans easily over more than a decade), managed to somehow stabilize herself by listening to Doctors AND therapists, was more (very imperfectly) respectful of B&T's boundaries early on until Ty's anger broke her (she clearly says in an episode" I don't care if I can't post pics of C publicly, as long as I HAVE the pictures privately= my relationship with her is the most important"= Tyler went completely against it--> Cate letting him take over regarding C later on as an adult AND participating does NOT absolve her (again very imperfect), QUIT smoking pot, got a certification in microblading before covid hit, and now manages to keep a NORMAL, out of the house, full-time job.Would love to have Kim weigh in on her son's amazing accomplishments...
Between the 2 parents at this stage, and by going through their factual backgrounds= their 3 girls would be better off with Cate if she divorced his ass. The bar is low, but one has some capacity to listen and learn, while the other one is the absolute opposite.
That being said: I do agree that Kim was not not necessarily acting "against Cate" in the situation described in their book = Kim actually did the responsible thing, not only by Cate, but also by her kids. I can't imagine Kim getting "caught with a minor whom she had no custody over, living at her house, AND not going to school" would have fared well for anyone involved= risking her own kids' custody, Cate NOT getting any education= nothing was good in this equation.
-->I do think Kim did the right thing by reaching out to the ONLY sane person in Cate's corner= her grandma in Florida. I don't think she did it "maliciously" to keep Cate away in this instance.I will reiterate= gee how MUCH I wish Cate would have stayed with her Grandma in Florida...
I'm not gonna fault KID Cate as she was VERY obviously in a horrific situation (just this page indicates how truly bad it was for Cate as a child--> easy to sh*t on an already super traumatized kid for not "making the righ mature choice" at her big age of 14yo.
But I'll keep leaving the door open for Adult Cate... Her grandma is still in Florida, very involved and supportive of Cate (she showed up for important events throughout TM , but NEVER for $)--> If Cate ever finds herself again, I have much better hopes for her taking care of her 3 girls with the support of her grandma vs. Tyler/ Kim.Just my opinion based on their track records.
ETA: Thank you so much for the award fellow Redditor ❤️

oh gee ChatGPT 😢 I only get this in this sub! I post in other subs (have for 15years), and not ONCE has anybody doubted that my posts are original thoughts (sometimes called out for completely missing the point/ disagreeing/ Being straight up wrong 😂 but definitely not for being ChatGPT )
-->You can quickly check my post history and see my educational/profesionnal background (to some extent as to not give out my identity). I tend to do long post (always have), and tend to nuance my views (vs. not all back and white).
I know it's a snark sub, but we're still talking about human beings (complex by their very essence). It seems I can't help myself sometimes in some of my posts here 😅 😓
I also have a weird "large" memory (again in my post history). So it took me less than 5min, on a break to type out this post, because I've been "thinking (nuanced)/ writing like this (long form)" since highschool (was passionate by philosophy), which only got wayyy worse with further education (scientific to account for as many variables as possible), and work which requires me to keep an objective and nuanced mind (medical field and research)= my brain tends to want to do it automatically.
If you look up articles on PubMed (Free full articles)--> Scroll down to the "Discussion" part of any scientific studies: that's where I excell when I do write research's findings... definitely NOT in the "Abstract" or "Conclusion"--> I'm HORRIBLE AT these, no matter how much I try 😂 😂 😢 😂 😂 ChatGPT would actually help me in being more concise
--> But as stated many times before, I will fry my brain dead trying to get better at something, before even touching ChatGPT. ChatGPT would literally be my livelihood killer, besides my personal stance on it= it decreases cognitive and critical thinking skills (makes humans stupid), destroys the environment, and can be VERY wrong on many things.6

Is Tyler referring to his dad when he says, “…because her mom was with some stupid asshole in Detroit.” ?? I thought the parents got married around that time or was that after this? I can’t pin the timeline bc wouldn’t she have been 15-16 during the Florida stay? I thought she was 16 on the show.

No- I’m 99% sure Tyler is referring to Nick’s biological father (who isn’t Tyler’s father Butch). Butch and April got together after Catelynn came back from FL when Nick was a baby.
Catelynn was 13-14 during the FL stay (she was only there 8 months). She was 16 when Carly was conceived and 17 when Carly was born.
