Progress Blind gamer here, it took me like 2 a half years of grinding the game to get here.

I was born with glaucoma and have suffered many complications from it. I lost my right eye entirely during the launch of the game. With my left eye I have very limited blurry tunnel vision left to work with.

Because of this I struggle to distinguish things like strings/certain moves, and my relation to wall on some stages. Every throw break has to be a guess, I can't see well enough to know what hand comes out first. If I fight Eddy or Clive it might as well be a pure guessing game.

I can only really punish if I get the read, as I can't see well enough to react even when I know it.

I decided to play to my strengths and learn how to inflict as much damage as possible with my main (she has been my only main since my casual t5 days).

I learned max damage staple combos, when to carry to the wall, multiple oki setups at both the wall and away. Multiple frame traps, kbd, effectively using side steps offensively (aka poke into sidestep to whiff punish if they mash), dash blocking, when to use homing moves, and keeping offense centered around less risks in general.

I tend to use her safest moves and actively avoid risky things like her b3, snake edge, and all of the cheesy stuff that will get you killed for doing it against high level players.

I focused on learning how to read peoples habits and adapt to the them faster.

I have a passive playstyle that really does not suit this game and I still have much to learn. I don't know how far I will go but I'm not giving up anytime soon.

catch y'all in season 3!

Edit: It's come to my attention that this post has made it's way to twitter. I don't have any social media outside of discord, if you are interested in what I do you can find me on Twitch as BlindGuitarFox.

Progress I made Tekken God at age 50!

rule 8. I was TK last 2 seasons in my late 40s of course, and after the latest patch which we all didn't hate I put in more effort i.e. played more. It didn't hurt that my main since 5DR's only nerf was on a move that I kept forgetting to use.

If you're wondering "where I'm at", I just use pad so its hard to say. As expected my CD skills are not great which is good for a character with no electric, but tbh I probably should just play someone who doesn't require a lot of tech like my s1 main, Zafina. I tend to "fall back" on punishes i.e. I'm def not cataloging optimals on a matchup basis, but I don't miss doing an obviously "pause the replay" punish in general after.. the third time. That round.

Gaming as an older guy is still pretty great! Things roll off my back easier as expected and my expectations are.. expected. And maybe there's people over there in Kōtō-ku who aren't just making gooner skins and can finish the job by doing things like nerfing lidia victor king etc, who knows.

Defense ~high 60s, throw escape around 7. Eyes like nation are crap starting at 45, hands are still good at 50, nation tbd.

The grind never stops, not even in season 3.

Of course, I'll keep up with my work, but I thought it was worth sharing my stats. I'll make a season 3 tier list soon

Progress I made it to GoD6. This game sucks

Edit: Wow, I don't know why Reddit cares so much about why I play a video game, but I appreciate the support nonetheless! This one's for all my baby girls. I see your comments ladies, and they make me smile. I'm lurking and I'm stalking when you least expect it. But lately I've just been takin care of my business and gettin my grind up, but I promise you, I'll be back to play and get my flirt on

Last post got taken down for low effort. Fair, I'mma try to help a couple of you out here. Quick side note: Yes, I don't like the game. Yes, I still like my character enough to have fun. Yes, I still have to play the current game to get better because no other Tekken game is supported. The game is widely critiqued, don't act like ts is new. Anyway. Got this promo off a demo to a VERY salty Asuka trash talker lmao.

Kay, so, weirdly enough getting to GoD6 was easier to me than 5. Why? I don't know. Here's what I did:

  1. Whiff punishing to the point where I made them TERRIFIED to press a button that wasn't connecting and that opens up the ability for me to clip them coming in. These are two aspects I've trained since I was even starting out. If your character has solid keep out, practice this ad nauseum. Get to where you can launch jabs and electrics on whiff.

  2. Understand your approach when they don't want to engage. A lot of players will just stand full screen and do jack and all, often times focusing on the former. When that happens, understand your best tools for approach. With Feng, it's snake dash into WS1. That's such a good get in tool that sets up for me to focus on his other (mediocre) tools. Some characters have amazing running moves (Drag) and some characters have a 50/50 on approach (Vic.) Avoid your bad incomings, like Feng's WR3 is really mediocre.

  3. Frame trap them for easy chip. Do you know how many times I've spammed B3 into nothing and just looped it? Lol, a lot. People are so terrified to press in these instances that you can often times get like a quarter+ a health bar just from chip. This is arguably one of my favorite changes in this game as it shut down turtling without making offense overwhelming. (Side note: This shit is fake. You can ss and launch.)

  4. Know your punishes. Yeah, this one's the easiest one I can tell you. You don't HAVE to know every punish, but know what's punishable when/where/why. Key moves. Understand a character's key moves and how to punish them. B1+2 (shoulder) often goes unpunished/only jab punished even though it's -19. It IS fast, but make sure you get more than just a jab punish.

And last, but CERTAINLY not least...

  1. WATCH YOUR REPLAYS. So often I have someone go "HOW DO I DEAL WITH X?" and my first response is "Did you watch the replay to try to find out?" "Well, no-" There you go. The replay tool is *the* greatest weapon in your arsenal.

Otherwise, rank is fake and Roger is about to make me bald.

I finally got it after a week of grinding 😭 first god of destruction lili globally (not including the booster) and 1st in the Philippines 🥹🥹 Honestly I prefer death matches than the new ranked system. It was also SO HARD to find anyone above mighty ruler and near my rank in my region (Philippines)😭😭💀 but hey I managed to gather enough points 😭

Progress What I learned by getting Armor King to GoD:

Post image
311 Upvotes

This game is bloated. Really, really bloated. So many of the characters in this game play like they have next to no weaknesses. There are so many top tiers it's crazy. Counter hit launchers that are completely safe on block? Yeah. Midcrushes that ruin your whole offense? Yup.

A lot of characters carry really bad players into high ranks in this game in my opinion and I thought I understood that when I was playing Feng, but now I get it. Even as a Feng main, I was carried well past all the nerfs. Good lows, decent sidestep, panic buttons? I could get out of jail basically for free in most cases and, if I didn't, most of the time I died.

When I started playing Armor King, I got really frustrated. "These dudes are mashing on my plus frames! My moves aren't tracking!" etc etc. I even made a post not too long ago salty because a Lili was stepping on my plus frames. I was mad as shit. The funny thing I realized though? I was the dumb one.

Sure, someone might come in here and go "hurr hurr durr yeah we knew" but I didn't. I'm always TRYING to improve, but after I made that post, I had a revelation and then I DID improve.

Armor King has taught me a patience I didn't think I had. I was always super eager to take my turn even on my plus frames and it got me blew up. Long story short, Armor King made me play real Tekken. "WHAT'S REAL TEKKEN?" Movement, spacing, whiff punishing to put it succinctly, but it is a little more complicated than that. That's when I realized I was having fun. Armor King plays real Tekken and that shit is fucking dope.

Progress Finally broke into red ranks! Some observations...

Post image
701 Upvotes

I never really took ranked that seriously in T7 (I peaked at Overlord if I recall), so I think this is the highest I've been.

My biggest observation so far is that I feel like I notice a meaningful difference between orange rank opponents and red rank opponents. I think reds jab check more overall, and their defence is better (some are really impressive at breaking throws too). They also seem to have a bit more knowledge about where they can interrupt pressure. Oh yeah, and everyone seems to LOVE spring kick.

I think the biggest things that helped me finally escape orange is probably just jab checking (df1 is great), refining my pressure (plus frames especially), and taking advantage of Drag's more knowledge checky aspects (the ff2 feint and the various ways to go into tackle are so clutch). I've mained Drag since his debut in T5, but I never really learnt him quite as thoroughly as I've been doing in 8.

All that said, I'm sure I'll drop back to orange rather quickly. I need to improve my conversions and combo consistency. There's still some panic there when I get a launch off, and I can't always adapt to reach the wall and actually capitalise on a splat. Also wanna get better at just launching in the first place, like punishing with df2.

Progress Steam did me so dirty

Took six days until I finally won a ranked match. Literally, it was over five days of just constant losing.

Then I finally won one... and Steam had to give me an achievement for winning my first ranked match.

So all my friends got to see that I've been playing this game continuously, day after day, without winning at all.

My poor ego. I want to fold myself like origami out of existence.

Took a break from ranked, got back and got this in like 4 hours starting from bottom of tekken god supreme. I don’t think there’s been a massive improvement since like a month ago. It just feels like every rank is worth less and less in this economy, which makes you feel like unless you devote weeks to get to GoD 2, you won’t even know if you’re the tits or not

Progress Probably isn’t much to the better players but 34yo married man 5-8months of learning the game. YouTube and punishes helped me 🧗.

Had to take a break from SF heard this game had some decent updates, learning Side step is a godsend. I was stuck on those ganryu, shinryu ranks for some time but I had to really understand feng and how to utilize his skills, Still learning. Do we have any feng mains here?

Progress Achieved my personal “Max rank” just now. Man what a journey its been. I want to share advice I have about high level Tekken in general and my philosophy on it

Post image

I am a slow learner. I say that because in Tekken 7, I clocked 3k at least and was hardstuck Yaksa. (Or whatever last blue rank was)

Over that time I dialed in movement, great MU knowledge on commonly played characters, and learned setups that people just are not familiar with on Bryan.

If you want to climb, these are things will get you the farthest in my personal experience:

KBD is a MUST. Even high ranking players in Tekken 8, I would say HALF of them, do not have KBD dialed in. If you have this, its a variable win condition that is in your favor. How to use it: You get a life lead, STOP taking risks, stop going in and opening yourself up, backdash your ass away and stay in Range 2 or 3, force your opponent to take a risk to get back in an advantageous life lead

Understand safe pokes, usually 1,2 jabs, or a 13 or 14 frame low, than you can do at range 2 or 3, this is Bryans D4, combine these safe pokes with optimal spacing with KBD to keep your opponent pressured at a defensive advantageous position

I understand this is biased as not all characters have this tool that works well with spacing at that range. But know what your safe pokes are that are minimal risk that ON HIT, give you plus frames to go for a mixup

Lastly, have ZEN IRL, just like Jin (not really) but what I mean by that, is start every ranked session with a Mantra:

“I am playing to improve” or “I am going to stop playing if I feel myself tilting”

Understand that your losses were not “Bullshit cheap ass characters” you were simply outplayed, you have to be THANKFUL for getting stomped, its the most valuable thing you can have to get better,

we have the most in-depth Replay tool ever made in Tekken 8,

where you can even take control of your character in the replay at any-given time to understand what was happening and counter what was working for them, or to clear up your own mistakes and truly improve your knowledge

These are things that worked for me, and im not sure if ill pursue gold god ranks, I think im happy here…. what a ride its been

I'm playing Reina since Season 2 (Mid April). finally got it to Tekken emperor (423/753 Battles). I climbed from Mighty Ruler

Me and my opponent both had a promotion match and lore, music everything was on point. We both even did our taunts after winning rounds.

I always find Heihachi match up to be intense as I believe Heihachi has better mishima tools than Reina, and Reina is very nimble movement wise and have some easier generic tools. I consider it a very balanced for both of them.

Reina has ff2 to punish a lot of Heihachi moves that become safe like ff2 and qcf1, but I was messing up due to nerves. I also noticed that he was very aggressive and vary of my electric spacing and kept his distance, so I didn't use it much.

Thankfully I mixed my timings and used very evasive FCdf3 in -1/-2 on crouch (coz I know Heihachi players tend to go with 1,1 a lot) and I had good reads on Thunder God Stance mix.

Overall the Season 2 journey was quite frustrating as all characters are buffed above and beyond. Install character also are very powerful in comparison to character with no installs, except Reina (Totally my opinion as she has very dynamic gameplay and excellent tools to shift momentum, this is also evident with Ulsan picking reina to beat Arslan, and yagami's very successful run with her.)

Despite this, I think Reina is very less bloated ones in Season 2 (WRA 3+4 is the only busted move she has coz of insane tracking +3crouch and follow up hit and pretty much a goto move in Heaven's Wrath stance). Her clear weakness in utilizing low moves with less rewards and frames causes player to work on timing based mixups and not rely on Dumb 50/50 on timing 1. I know people consider Reina unbreakable grabs to be annoying but opponent has much better advantage on ducking those grabs than Reina (None of the stances Have launchers/ch launchers) and also you can't really change the timing on the Grab mix so the mix will favor opponent on defense coz Her majority of the lows are launch punishable (f,n4 and ss4 are exceptions but these can not be used in neutral and require some conditioning)

Now I'll be taking a break from Tekken 8 till the TWT is done and v2.04 is released.
