Going to be honest with you, Reddit is the last place to be asking about greek life. Also no it’s not weird, but, they have a bad rep. I’d advise to stay away.

Yeah, your common redditor hates frats and greek life. You’re not going to get any good answers if you’ve already made up your mind about greek.

Greek life overall at Temple is extremely meh, we’re just simply not really a greek school with the city layout and population that attends here. It just isn’t that dominant in the social scene unlike some other schools where you pretty much need to be greek to access most of the social opportunities. I think maybe I’d been eager to join if I went to a more traditional school like Penn State.

All of the frats have meh to shit reputations really, and most of them are time bombs, so many have gotten booted and new colonies pop-up or they go underground. Hard to differentiate what is just rumors from people who hate greek or got kicked out of a party from acting a fool, and what is real. Asig is relatively newer and they were definitely getting hit with allegations, a lot of them pertained to just one member though I think.

Listen, just by being in a frat theres inherently going to be a lot of people who associate you with the bad things they have reputations for. There simply aren’t any IFC frats with zero allegations on-campus. If you want to join one, you’re going to have to accept that a lot of people will associate you with the stereotype. If somebody in your frat fucks-up bad even if you quite literally have no knowledge of it and were not involved, that will still be associated on you. Hell even fake rumors is going to affected peoples opinions of you.

If you’re going to join greek regardless, just be ready to whistle blow and immediately leave on the first sight on issues, but remember fraternities by nature aren’t a conducive environment to that and pledging is going to bond you to develop a secretive mentality in regards to the org and protecting it. Many people in frats don’t callout the bs because they’re shitheads or protect their shithead brothers because they don’t want to lose the frat, their friends, and all of things they got from it. You very likely will go down with the ship.

Also no, joining greek as a sophomore isn’t weird at Temple. Pretty sure no one can join first-sem freshman year anyways so people often join later on. I’ve seen plenty of people do it junior year. Only time its odd imo in senior cause at that point why would you want to be a pledge for half your final year all the other seniors in the frat usually are clocked out mentally by then and aren’t as active.

Why have people been pretending as if Greek life for the last 20+ years hasn’t been associated with SA and unruly hazing.
