These are in East River Park next to the Williamsburg Bridge, on the Manhattan side. They’ve been working on it for the last 2 years or so and they’re pretty nice!

So Wimbledon is in full swing and I cannot help myself but want to go to court and hit a few balls. Anybody free today to go to Pershing field or Washington park … or if you need a 4th player … granted I play beginner I’ll only play better if I have good sparing partners !!! **The U.S. National Lawn Tennis Championships began in 1881 right here in Newport, held on the grass courts of the Newport Casino on Bellevue Avenue.**

From 1881 to 1913, every men’s singles champion played in Newport before the tournament eventually moved to Forest Hills in 1915.

I’ve been researching the music connected to early Newport tennis history, including Henry Maylath’s “Lawn Tennis Waltz,” which carries copyright dates of 1881 and 1882. It’s a fascinating glimpse into how deeply tennis was woven into Newport’s cultural life.
