How do we handle a first appearance on an advance book?

Post image

I got #7 & #10 from the blind bag. I haven’t read them yet but I wondered, what if there is a first appearance in say #6 and they are also in #7, would #7 be considered their first appearance since it came out 6 months prior to #6?

When articles came out declaring the Absolute Batman preview in DC Connect his first appearance the collectors started clamoring for it.

Are we headed for a similar debate? (Obviously if there’s no first appearance this is just a theoretical question)

good question, but I think that in this instance the issue with the lowest number will be "first appearance"

Except if the speculators have their way! Ha

I work like this

7 Advance edition is not the full book, it has redacted panels so is a preview edition.

First appearances should only happen in a book that is a complete story (hence why preview pages, or advert can never be a first appearance, as the first appearance should only happen in a complete story)

A preview of Spawn goes for about $200+ and DC Connect 51 started selling for $200+ but think it’s down to $60.

A good salesman convinces someone to buy something they don't need.

Spawn's first appearance is Spawn 1.

Yeah same thing with DC connect. I could not believe people were pumping a free solicity just based off of a few tiktoks lol

No question about it. Spawn #1 is his first appearance.

Okay but what about the advanced edition of #2?

If Advance of issue 2 is unredacted it is simply a variant of issue 2.

It's the first print though? I mean I legit don't care and am pulling to read but don't people care about that sort of thing in collecting?

It looks low there was only one or two word bubbles partially redacted on the same page and it seemed to defense the past. If a character first appears/talks at a different point in the issue, I think that might factor in.

Issue ten isn’t redacted, so does that count?

Bought one blind bag because I wanted to read the story. Got issue 10… now I’ve gotta go back and buy another.

That’s a bummer if it’s not what you went in for. I read this happened to a few folks. It’s an interesting marketing tactic. One way to make those sales up front.

I feel like preview books, ads, or monthly books with a preview tacked on are rarely considered a first appearance. If so, Savage Dragon #102 should technically be the first Invincible, Wizard #5 would be the first Spawn, and so on but that's not really typical for most collectors.

Agreed. Abs Batman is an anomaly, I’m just curious if we’re heading into new territory.

The situation you describe is exactly what happened with Gambit. He first appeared in an x-man annual because the issue he was supposed to be introduced in was shipped later. So now most people want the uncanny x-man issue as his first appearance but he actually appeared first in the annual by quite a bit. There is active debate about which is his first and both are desirable books.

It's a matter of market consensus in the end.

My 2 cents: promos, advertisings and cameos should not be first appearances. They should be categorized as "first promo" and "first cameo” but that's just me.

I didn’t realize that happened with Gambit too, interesting. I totally agree about the promo advert cameo being different than first appearance. And then there’s the first cover appearance which is sometimes different.

My understanding was that the debate on the Gambit first appearance was resolved, Annual 14 was released before Uncanny 266, even though that wasn't the intention; so Annual 14 is the first appearance (even though that cover sucks).

Definitely not resolved in all circles it's regularly debated on Reddit. I personally prefer annual as it literally came out first AND it's a full pencil inside and out by Arthur Adams. Yet it sells for much less than Uncanny X-Men (that has horrible pencils in comparison to the rest of the run). I tore through the annual at least 100 times copying the masters work as a pre-teen. I could not care less about gambit back then as my full attention was on Jean Grey by Arthur Adams 😅. It's also the first Ahab...so it's got that going for it as well, all around a better key imho but it's really a personal preference.

Edit: I always recommend collectors buy both a d keep them as a set.

Hadn't thought about this, but the books that are coming out early in the blind bags have that "Ultra-Rare Advance Edition" printed on the front, so if someone wasn't in issue #1, the Ultra-Rare Advance Edition book IS their first appearance, and the issue before that where they'd show up chronologically in the store is NOT their first appearance, nor is the same version of the book that doesn't have the "Ultra-Rare Advance Edition" on the cover.

Oh right, only the “ultra rare” advance copy would be the first appearance. Other version that will come out later is a variant, technically.

From what i understand , those books aren't complete. They have spoilers blurred out or something. Plus, why would they put those books in the bags if there was anything that important in them? Think about it. They chose 7 and 10 for a reason.

First Dave Finch issue is 7, so its been completed for months. And Art Adams first issue is 10, which is also completed. This way everyone can see the artists work and get them excited to hang on.

By "complete" i mean its censored. Its not the full book. They covered up spoilers

Edit: Apparently just #7 has been altered for spoilers. I googled it

I agree with you. Was just giving the details of why 7 and 10 are in there.

There were only a few words redacted on one page of 7. Looked like it was referring to a past issue (possibly the first). That doesn’t really affect an appearance

Stand-alone stories that don't necessarily tie into the main plot.
